Choose the right way to join
Arma 3 provides three practical connection methods. The best choice depends on what information you have and whether the server appears in the public browser.

Direct Connect is the most dependable fallback when a known server does not appear in search results. Name search is simpler when you do not have an IP address. Favorites reduce repeated typing after you have successfully identified the server.
Method 1: Join with Direct Connect
Use this method when the administrator has supplied an IP address and port, or when the browser cannot find a server that you know is running.

- Start Arma 3 and open Multiplayer from the main menu.
- Open Server Browser.
- Select the Direct Connect tab.
- Enter the server’s IP address in the address field.
- Enter the server’s port. Unless the administrator specified another base port, the default game port is 2302/UDP.
- Click Join.
- If a password field appears, enter the password exactly as supplied, including capitalization.
Do not silently substitute a different port for the one supplied by the host. A correct IP with the wrong port points your client at a different service, so the connection can fail even when the server itself is online.
What an address should contain
A Direct Connect invitation normally gives you two separate values: an IP address and a port. Keep them separate when entering them into Arma 3’s fields. If the host gives you a combined address, copy the numeric port after the colon into the port field rather than treating the entire string as an IP address.

When Direct Connect is preferable
- The server owner gave you a private or community server address.
- The server is online but absent from the public list.
- Name search returns several similarly named servers.
- You need to test whether a known address is reachable without waiting for browser results.
Method 2: Find the server by name
- Open Multiplayer.
- Open Server Browser.
- Use the browser’s search field to enter the server name, or a distinctive part of it.
- Select the correct result and verify any visible details before joining.
- Click Join.
- Enter the server password if the server requests one.
Search is useful when the owner has provided a name but not a direct address. If no result appears, do not assume the server is offline: use Direct Connect with the supplied IP and port, then check the host’s control panel status.

Method 3: Save the server in Steam Favorites
Steam’s Game Servers window can store a server in Favorites so you can return to it without re-entering the address. The commonly documented path is:
- Open Steam’s View menu.
- Choose Game Servers.
- Open the Favorites tab.
- Use the + control to add the server address and port.
- Save the entry, then select it when you want to connect again.
Steam’s labels can vary with client updates, so check the current wording in your Steam installation if a menu item is named slightly differently. You still need the correct IP address and port when creating the favorite. Saving a favorite does not correct an incorrect address, a stopped server, a blocked port, or a mod mismatch.
Arma 3 ports explained
The base game port is UDP 2302. The Bohemia Interactive community wiki identifies related ports by offsets from that base port:

Port terminology is inconsistent across hosting guides. For example, some guides call 2304 the Steam port and omit 2305, while another labels 2304 as “Voice.” When you are configuring a host, follow the server software’s documentation and the Bohemia Interactive wiki’s offset scheme rather than mixing labels from different guides.
Changing the base port
An administrator can change the base game port with the launch parameter -port=. The related Steam and BattlEye ports follow the same offsets from the new base port. If the base is changed, ask the host for the complete connection address; do not assume that 2302 remains correct.
Multiple servers on one machine
For multiple Arma 3 server instances on the same machine, space base ports by at least 100. A documented example is 2302 for one instance and 2402 for another. Each instance’s related ports then follow its own base-port offsets.

Password and mod requirements
Passwords are case-sensitive
Enter the password exactly as provided. Uppercase and lowercase letters are treated differently, so retyping a password from memory can produce a failed join even when every other connection detail is correct. If the host recently changed the password, obtain the current value rather than repeatedly trying an old one.

Players need the same mods installed as the server to connect. A connection can fail or stop at the loading stage when required content is missing or the local mod set does not match what the server expects. Ask the administrator for the required mod list and compare it with the mods enabled in your Arma 3 launcher before trying again.
Do not treat a successful browser listing as proof that your mod setup is correct. Listing and joining are separate steps: the server can be visible while your client still lacks required content.

If you operate the server, the host’s router and firewall need to allow the server’s UDP traffic. Guides commonly recommend opening UDP ports 2302 through 2306 for a default base port. If you changed the base port with -port=, apply the same offsets to the new range.
- Confirm the server process is running.
- Confirm the hosting control panel reports the server as Online.
- Allow the required UDP range through the host firewall.
- Forward the same UDP range on the router to the machine running the server, when the server is behind a router.
- Give players the current public IP address and the actual base port.
Players cannot repair a closed host port from inside the game. If Direct Connect fails for everyone, the administrator should verify the online status, port forwarding, and firewall rules first.
Troubleshooting by symptom

A reliable troubleshooting order
- Ask the host to confirm the control panel says Online.
- Copy the IP address and port again; do not rely on an old favorite or chat message.
- Try Direct Connect rather than waiting for a browser result.
- Enter the password with its original capitalization.
- Compare the enabled mods with the server’s required mods.
- If multiple players fail, have the host check UDP 2302–2306, or the matching offset range for a custom base port, in the firewall and router.
This order separates client-entry mistakes from server availability, content compatibility, and host-network problems. It also prevents changing several variables at once, which makes the cause harder to identify.
Direct Connect versus browser search versus Favorites
Use the following decision rule when choosing a method:
- You have an IP and port: choose Direct Connect first.
- You only have a server name: search the Server Browser.
- The name search is empty but the host says the server is running: use Direct Connect.
- You join regularly: save the verified address in Steam Favorites after the first successful connection.
Favorites are a convenience layer, not a separate network path. They store the same address information you would otherwise type manually, so an outdated favorite must be edited or replaced when the host changes its IP or port.
What is not guaranteed by the join procedure
The connection steps do not establish that every server supports every current Arma 3 version, or that a particular mod collection is compatible with your installation. Version compatibility was not verified for a specific server here. Treat the host’s announced game version and mod list as authoritative, and ask the administrator when those details are not provided.

Quick pre-join checklist
- Arma 3 is installed and updated as required by the server.
- You know either the exact server name or the exact IP address and port.
- The host’s control panel reports Online.
- You have the current password, with capitalization preserved.
- Your enabled mods match the server’s required mods.
- If you run the host, UDP 2302–2306 are allowed, or the equivalent offset range for a custom base port.
Final connection sequence
- Open Multiplayer and then Server Browser.
- Search by name, or select Direct Connect and enter the supplied IP and port.
- Click Join.
- Enter the case-sensitive password when requested.
- Resolve any mod mismatch before attempting repeated joins.
- Save the verified address to Steam Favorites if you plan to return.
