What serverDZ.cfg controls
serverDZ.cfg is a plain-text key-value configuration file read when the DayZ server process starts. It is not XML or JSON. A change does nothing to a running instance until you restart that instance, so plan edits around a maintenance window or a controlled restart.

The file normally sits in the DayZ server root, alongside the executable and the directories used for profiles, logs, keys and missions. A hosting panel may expose the same file through a web editor rather than a normal file browser, but the underlying settings are the same. Make a backup before changing it; a known-good copy is the fastest recovery from a malformed edit.
The configuration covers server identity and access, signature and anti-cheat behavior, the in-game clock, connection queuing and the mission template. It does not contain every gameplay rule. Stamina, base-building and HUD behavior are commonly configured in cfggameplay.json; item quantities and loot economy are commonly controlled by db/types.xml and db/globals.xml. Editing the wrong file will not change the behavior you expect.

Prepare the server before editing
- Stop the server cleanly, or use the host panel’s stop function. Editing while a panel is writing the file can overwrite your changes.
- Download or copy the existing
serverDZ.cfgand record the current launch parameters, profile directory and instance directory. - Use a plain-text editor that preserves quotation marks and line endings. Do not paste smart quotes from a word processor.
- Confirm the DayZ server build and mod set you intend to run. Configuration names and accepted values can change with game updates.
- Keep a second copy of the last working file. If the server starts with unexpected behavior, restoring it separates a syntax problem from a gameplay problem.
Understand the file’s syntax
Settings use a name, an equals sign, a value and a semicolon. Text values are quoted; numeric and Boolean-style values are not. Comments may be accepted in common examples, but remove comments if your panel’s parser rejects them.

BattlEye = 1;Keep one statement per line and preserve the semicolon. A missing quote, an extra comma or another syntax error can make an instance silently fall back to defaults instead of applying the value you intended. Always inspect the startup log after a restart rather than assuming a successful process launch means every setting was accepted.

Identity and access settings
hostname: the name players see
hostname is the public server name shown in the browser and connection dialogs. Include the map, play style or restart policy only if it helps players identify the instance; avoid putting credentials or private infrastructure details in the name. Changes require a restart before they appear consistently in listings.
password: an optional join password
A non-empty password requires players to enter that value when joining. Use it for a private test server, an event or a staged mod rollout. Do not confuse it with administrative access: this password controls joining, while passwordAdmin controls console authentication.
passwordAdmin: console administration
Anyone who knows passwordAdmin can authenticate with the #login command and run console administrator commands. Treat it like a root password: generate a unique secret, never reuse a personal password, do not publish it in screenshots or panel notes, and rotate it if it was exposed. A join password does not protect administrator commands.

maxPlayers: the player cap
maxPlayers sets the configured player ceiling. The practical capacity still depends on the server hardware, mission, mods and host limits, so increasing this number does not guarantee acceptable performance. Set it to the capacity you can monitor and support, then test connection and restart behavior with your actual mod load.
Security: signature checks, builds and BattlEye
verifySignatures: resolve the value conflict carefully
Community references disagree about accepted verifySignatures values. The DayZ modding wiki is reported as supporting only value 2; other guides describe 0, 1 and 2 as off, lenient and strict modes, while one Steam example uses 3. Those descriptions cannot all be treated as authoritative, and the official configuration page does not confirm the disputed values in the available documentation.
For a normally secured modded server, verifySignatures = 2; is the widely used safe default. Confirm that value against the current Bohemia Interactive documentation for your server build before changing it. Do not copy a value of 3 merely because it appears in a launch example.
With strict signature checking, every loaded .pbo, including mod content, must have a valid .bisign signature and the corresponding public key must be present in the server’s keys folder. A missing key or unsigned package can prevent a client from joining or produce signature errors in the log. Install the server and client versions of a mod from the same release, copy only the required keys, and remove stale mod files when replacing a release.
BattlEye: leave anti-cheat enabled
BattlEye = 1; is the commonly recommended setting for keeping BattlEye active. Disabling it removes an important layer of server protection and should be limited to a controlled diagnostic test. If players are kicked after enabling BattlEye, read the BattlEye and server logs for the exact reason instead of turning protection off permanently.

forceSameBuild: keep client and server builds aligned
Community example files commonly use forceSameBuild = 1; to require a matching game build. This is useful after an update when allowing an older client would create incompatible behavior. Confirm the setting’s current support and behavior in the official documentation for your build before relying on it as an update policy.
Configure the in-game clock

Choose persistence first. Set serverTimePersistent = 1; when you want the world clock to continue naturally through restarts. Set it to 0 when every restart should return the world to the configured serverTime. A scheduled restart therefore has a predictable dawn or dusk only in the non-persistent mode.
Acceleration values need extra caution. Community guides suggest values such as 4–8 for a normal day and 8–16 for shorter nights, while another discussion mentions values as high as 64. Because those ranges conflict, do not present any of them as a guaranteed limit. Change one multiplier at a time, restart, observe a complete day/night transition and verify the result in logs and in game.
Prevent connection spikes with the login queue
loginQueueConcurrentPlayers
This setting controls how many players the server processes concurrently while they are joining. The commonly reported default is 5. Limiting concurrent processing helps avoid a large frame drop when many clients connect immediately after a restart. A lower value can smooth a weak server but makes a long queue; a higher value may shorten waits while increasing the connection-time load.

loginQueueMaxPlayers
This setting caps the number of players allowed to wait in the login queue. Community examples commonly use 500; that is an example, not a universal requirement. Set a limit that matches your expected event size and communicate what happens when the queue is full. The queue protects the simulation during bursts; it does not increase the server’s sustainable in-game player capacity.

Mission and map selection
The active map is selected in the Missions class block near the bottom of the file. A common community pattern is:

};The template name must match an installed mission folder and the map supported by that mission. Replace the template only after confirming the exact folder name, capitalization and mod requirements. A typo can stop the mission from loading even when the rest of the configuration is valid.
Operational settings found in community templates
Example files often include the following lines:

storageAutoFix = 1;These values are frequently copied together with security and time settings, but the available documentation does not establish a universal requirement for every server version. Keep the existing values unless you have a documented reason to change them, and check the current official reference before introducing a new option. An unknown key is not automatically harmless: depending on the parser, it may be ignored, logged or contribute to a fallback configuration.
A conservative starting configuration
The following combines commonly used community values with explicit placeholders. It is a starting point, not an authoritative complete file; retain the settings already supplied by your server distribution and validate every line against your current build.

};The numbers in this sample are community examples. In particular, verify signature mode, acceleration limits, queue capacity and operational flags against the current official configuration reference before deploying them to a public server.
Apply a change safely
- Stop the DayZ instance and make a dated backup of
serverDZ.cfg. - Edit one logical group at a time: access, security, time or queue settings. Keep unrelated changes out of the same test.
- Check every quoted value for matching straight quotes, every statement for a semicolon and every class block for balanced braces.
- Save the file in plain text with its original filename and location. If a control panel has separate profile and instance paths, verify that you edited the file the running instance actually reads.
- Start the server and wait for the full startup sequence. A process that remains online does not prove that every line was accepted.
- Read the startup and script logs for parse errors, mission-loading failures, signature warnings and BattlEye messages.
- Connect with a test account. Confirm the browser name, password behavior, administrator login, map, clock and mod signatures before announcing the restart.
- If anything is wrong, restore the last working backup, restart, and reintroduce changes one at a time.
Troubleshoot the failures administrators see most often
The server starts but uses old values
- Confirm the instance was actually restarted; editing a running process cannot reload the file.
- Check that the panel is pointing at the intended profile or instance directory.
- Look for a duplicate
serverDZ.cfgand compare timestamps. - Inspect logs for a parse error or a fallback-to-default message.
Players cannot join after a mod update
- Confirm every server-side
.pbohas a matching valid.bisign. - Place the mod’s public key in the server
keysdirectory. - Ensure clients use the same mod release and load order.
- Check the configured
verifySignaturesmode against current documentation instead of switching to an unverified value.
The world clock keeps resetting
Check serverTimePersistent. A value of 0 intentionally resets the clock to serverTime after each restart; a value of 1 preserves it. Also confirm that a scheduled task or host panel is replacing the file during deployment.
Restart causes a performance spike
Review loginQueueConcurrentPlayers and loginQueueMaxPlayers. A large simultaneous connection wave can create a frame drop; reducing concurrent processing can smooth the burst, while an excessively small value leaves players waiting. Use logs and observed queue behavior to choose a value rather than copying a popular example unchanged.
The map fails to load
Verify the template string in the Missions block against the installed mission directory, including capitalization. Remove an incompatible map mod, restore the previous template and restart to isolate whether the failure is a path typo or a missing dependency.
What belongs in other files

Changing one of these files may also require a restart, but do not add JSON or XML syntax to serverDZ.cfg. Keep each format in its intended file.
Panel-managed versus self-hosted configuration

Whichever approach you use, prefer documentation that maps its controls to the official configuration names and explains signature-key handling. A friendly editor is not a substitute for knowing which file and build the running process uses.
