Microsoft recommends keeping Network Level Authentication (NLA) enabled, because it authenticates you before Windows creates a remote session.
This guide shows what to collect, how to connect from each major platform, how to handle the first certificate prompt, and how to isolate timeouts, refused connections, rejected credentials and NLA errors.

What you need before opening an RDP client
Have these details available from your VPS provider or administrator:

Use the public address assigned to the VPS, not a private address such as 10.x.x.x, 172.16.x.x or 192.168.x.x unless you are already inside the same private network or VPN.
- Windows username: The account must be permitted to use Remote Desktop. Depending on how the account was created, the sign-in may require a local-account format such as
COMPUTERNAMEusernameor.username, or a domain format such asDOMAINusername. - Password or other approved credentials: Use the credentials supplied for that account. A password that works for a provider portal is not necessarily the Windows password.
- RDP port: Standard RDP uses TCP port 3389, but an administrator may have configured a different listening port. If the provider gave you a nonstandard port, enter it as
hostname:portin the client.
If you do not know the address, username, password or configured port, ask the provider before troubleshooting the client. Guessing an address or repeatedly trying credentials can create lockouts and makes firewall diagnosis harder.

Confirm that the VPS can accept an RDP connection
The virtual machine is running and networked
Check the provider control panel first. The VPS should show a running state, have an assigned public address, and report a functioning network interface. A stopped, suspended or isolated VPS cannot answer an RDP request regardless of client settings.
If the provider offers a web console, serial console or virtual display, use it when the public network is unavailable. Console access lets you verify Windows status and repair networking without depending on RDP.
Remote Desktop is enabled in Windows
On a supported Windows installation, open Settings > System > Remote Desktop, turn on Remote Desktop, and confirm the action. On Windows Server, the equivalent setting can also be managed through server configuration tools or administrative policy. The exact labels vary by Windows release and policy configuration.
Enabling the feature creates a listening service and firewall rules, but it does not by itself guarantee Internet access. Provider-side filtering, a cloud security group or a local firewall can still block the traffic.
The Windows edition can host incoming Remote Desktop
Microsoft states that Windows Professional, Enterprise and Education editions, along with Windows Server editions, can act as Remote Desktop hosts. Windows Home cannot host incoming Remote Desktop connections using the built-in host feature. If your VPS image is Home edition, changing the client will not solve the limitation; request a supported image or an approved alternative from the provider.

Your account is authorized for remote sign-in
An administrator account is normally permitted to connect, subject to local policy. A standard account must be added to the Remote Desktop Users group or otherwise granted the Allow log on through Remote Desktop Services right by policy. Confirm that the account is enabled, its password has not expired, and it is not locked out.
For domain-joined servers, domain reachability and domain credentials matter during sign-in. A local account and a domain account with the same visible name are different identities; use the username format provided by the administrator.

Network Level Authentication remains enabled
NLA requires authentication before Windows creates a full remote session. Microsoft describes it as an additional security layer for Remote Desktop. Keep it enabled for normal operation. An older client that cannot perform NLA may fail before the desktop appears, but disabling NLA should be a temporary compatibility step only. Restore NLA after updating or replacing the client.
Allow RDP through every relevant firewall
RDP must pass through more than one possible control point. Check these layers in order:
- Provider firewall or access-control list: Permit inbound RDP to the VPS address and configured port. Where possible, restrict the source to your office, home or VPN public IP instead of allowing the entire Internet.
- Cloud network security group: If the VPS is attached to a virtual network policy, add an inbound rule for the RDP protocol and port. A security-group denial occurs before traffic reaches Windows.
- Windows Defender Firewall: Enable the inbound rules in the Remote Desktop rule group for the active network profile. A policy-managed server may show the rules as controlled by an administrator.
- Intermediate network devices: Corporate firewalls, hotel Wi-Fi, VPN policies and outbound filtering can block RDP even when the VPS is configured correctly.
Do not open a wider port range to “make it work.” Permit only the configured RDP port and the smallest practical source range. Microsoft warns that enabling Remote Desktop opens a listening port, so use trusted networks and strong credentials.

Connect from a Windows PC
- Open the Start menu and search for Remote Desktop Connection.
- Launch the built-in client. In Computer, enter the VPS public hostname or IP address. If a nonstandard port is configured, use the address-and-port format supplied by the administrator.
- Select Connect. When prompted, enter the Windows username and password. If the client offers a choice between a Microsoft account and another account, select the account type that matches the VPS credentials.
- Review the identity or certificate warning. Confirm that the displayed address matches the VPS you intended to reach and verify the certificate context with the provider or administrator before accepting.
- After authentication, Windows opens the remote desktop. If you receive a warning about an untrusted publisher or identity mismatch, do not dismiss it blindly; a changed address, stale certificate or wrong destination can all produce a warning.
For repeated connections, save a shortcut only after confirming the address and account. Avoid saving a password on a shared computer. The client’s Show Options area also exposes display, local-resource, performance and experience settings; leave redirection disabled unless you need it.

Connect from macOS, iPhone or iPad
Microsoft provides Windows App or its Remote Desktop client for macOS and iOS/iPadOS, with availability and feature names changing as clients are updated. Install the current Microsoft client for the operating system, then add a PC or workspace using the VPS hostname or IP address.
- Open the client and choose the option to add a PC or remote connection.
- Enter the VPS public hostname or IP address, including a custom port if one was supplied.
- Add the Windows username in the format required by the VPS and save the entry without storing the password on an untrusted device.
- Start the connection and review the certificate prompt against the address and administrator-confirmed certificate details.
- Authenticate and allow the session to open. If the client presents a workspace or feed screen rather than a direct PC entry, use the direct-PC option for a standalone VPS.
Client features differ by release. Multiple-monitor use, device redirection, credential storage and single sign-on may not be identical across macOS, iOS and Windows. Turn on only the redirection features you need, particularly clipboard, drives, microphones and cameras.
Connect from Android
Microsoft documents a Remote Desktop app for Android. Add a PC using the public VPS address, enter the Windows account and connect. The same network, firewall, credential, NLA and certificate checks apply regardless of phone or tablet.
- Install and open the current Microsoft Remote Desktop app.
- Choose Add or the equivalent option for a PC, then enter the VPS hostname or IP address and any nonstandard port.
- Supply the Windows username and password when prompted.
- Verify the certificate and destination before accepting the first connection.
- Use the app’s touch controls to operate the session, and disconnect from the session when finished rather than merely closing the app.
A mobile client is useful for administration but is less suitable for long sessions or tasks that require multiple monitors, extensive keyboard shortcuts or large file transfers.

Understand the first certificate warning
A first connection commonly produces an identity warning when the name you entered does not match a certificate trusted by your device. This is common with a newly provisioned VPS, a raw IP address or a certificate issued for an internal hostname.
Before accepting, compare the displayed destination with the address supplied by the provider. If the warning appears unexpectedly after a rebuild, address change or DNS change, stop and ask the administrator to confirm the certificate and server identity. Accepting a warning without checking can send credentials to the wrong machine. Once the certificate situation is verified, you may choose the client’s option to remember the decision only on a device you control.

There is an immediate refusal or timeout
Start outside Windows:
- Confirm that the VPS is powered on and has the expected public IP or hostname.
- Check the provider firewall and any cloud network security group for an inbound rule covering the configured RDP port.
- Verify that your current public IP is permitted if access is restricted by source address.
- Check Windows Defender Firewall’s inbound Remote Desktop rules through console access.
A timeout usually means that traffic is being dropped or the host is unreachable; an immediate refusal can indicate that the address is reachable but no service is listening on that port. These are clues, not proofs, so verify the listener and every firewall layer rather than changing random client settings.
The username or password is rejected
Re-enter the credentials carefully and confirm the username format. Check whether you are using a local account, a domain account or an account from a different identity provider. Through console access, verify that the account is enabled, not locked, not expired and a member of Remote Desktop Users when it is not an administrator. If a provider generated the password, reset it through the supported console or control panel rather than repeatedly guessing.
NLA reports an authentication or compatibility error
First confirm the time, username, password and domain reachability on the VPS. A domain-joined machine that cannot contact its domain controller may reject an otherwise correct domain credential. Use provider console access to repair networking or choose a valid local administrator account.
If an old client genuinely cannot use NLA, temporarily disabling NLA from the server’s Remote Desktop security settings may confirm a compatibility problem. Do this only on a controlled, trusted network while updating the client, then re-enable NLA immediately. Leaving it disabled exposes the sign-in service to weaker pre-authentication behavior.
The hostname fails but the IP address works
This points to name resolution or hostname configuration rather than the RDP service itself. Confirm that the hostname resolves to the current public IP and that the provider’s DNS record was updated after any rebuild or address change. Use the verified IP temporarily, but correct DNS so future connections and certificate validation use the intended name.
The connection reaches Windows but the desktop never loads
Use console access to check whether the RDP service and listener are running, whether the server is out of memory or stuck during startup, and whether a policy is denying interactive logon. Review Windows event logs and provider health information. A healthy network path does not guarantee that the Windows session service can create a desktop.

Recheck the active Windows network profile and the exact inbound rule group. A rule enabled for one profile may not apply to the profile currently assigned to the network interface. Also check for a provider rule that overrides or precedes the Windows rule. Microsoft’s troubleshooting material includes PowerShell guidance for enabling the Remote Desktop firewall rule group; use an administrator console and the command documented for your Windows version rather than copying an unverified command from an unknown source.
Use a client that fits the device

Across clients, compare the capabilities that matter to your work: multiple-monitor support, clipboard and drive redirection, keyboard handling, credential storage, certificate prompts and single sign-on. A client that can connect is not automatically configured safely; disable unnecessary redirection and avoid saved passwords on shared devices.

Secure the VPS after the first successful login
- Use a unique, strong password: Do not reuse the VPS administrator password on another service. Change provider-generated credentials through an approved administrative path.
- Reduce exposed sources: Restrict the provider firewall or security group to trusted office, home or VPN addresses whenever feasible.

A practical connection checklist
- VPS status is running and a public address is assigned.
- The Windows edition supports incoming Remote Desktop.
- Remote Desktop is enabled on the host.
- Your account is enabled and authorized for remote sign-in.
- You know whether the account is local or domain-based and are using the correct username format.
- The provider firewall and cloud security group allow the configured RDP port from your source address.
- Windows Defender Firewall allows the Remote Desktop inbound rules on the active profile.
- The client is current enough to use NLA.
- The first certificate prompt matches the intended VPS and has been verified before acceptance.
- After connecting, unnecessary redirection is disabled and the session is disconnected properly when work is complete.
