To monitor Redis on a Linux VPS, run redis_exporter as a small HTTP service, let it query Redis or Valkey, and configure Prometheus to scrape the exporter’s metrics endpoint. Grafana or another Prometheus-compatible tool can then display dashboards and send alerts. The reliable production pattern is Redis plus a least-privileged exporter, a private metrics listener, a Prometheus scrape job, and alerts tested against real failure conditions.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
What Redis Exporter does
Redis is not instrumented in Prometheus’s native exposition format. Redis Exporter acts as an adapter: it connects to Redis or Valkey, reads server state and statistics, and translates that information into Prometheus-formatted metrics over HTTP. Prometheus polls that HTTP endpoint, stores the resulting time series, and evaluates alert rules. Grafana reads the Prometheus data for dashboards.

The exporter is not a replacement for Redis, a Redis proxy, or a general-purpose log collector. If the exporter cannot authenticate or reach Redis, Prometheus may still reach the exporter, but the Redis metrics will show a failed scrape. Your monitoring design must therefore check both exporter health and Redis reachability.

| Layout | How it works | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exporter on the Redis VPS | Redis and redis_exporter share the host; Prometheus scrapes the VPS over localhost or a private address. |
Short network path, simple Redis access, and no need to expose Redis itself. | The exporter consumes a small amount of the same host’s CPU and memory as Redis. |
| Exporter on a monitoring host | The exporter runs separately and connects to Redis over a private network; Prometheus scrapes the monitoring host. | Monitoring remains available if the Redis VPS is heavily degraded or being rebuilt. | You must route and firewall the Redis connection and protect credentials across hosts. |
| Containerized exporter on the Redis VPS | Docker runs the exporter while Redis remains on the host. | Easy version pinning and rollback through image tags. | Container networking must provide a route to the host Redis service. |
Keep Redis’s own port private. Prometheus needs the exporter’s HTTP port, not a public Redis listener. A separate monitoring host is useful for resilience, but it is not mandatory for a single VPS.
Prerequisites and a safe baseline
- A running Redis or Valkey instance and its connection address, normally a private or loopback address plus port.
- Administrative access to install a binary, create a service account, or run Docker.
- A Prometheus server that can reach the exporter’s HTTP listener.
- A Redis credential with only the permissions required for read-only monitoring, where your Redis access-control design permits that separation.
- A decision about whether the exporter and Prometheus share the VPS or communicate over a private network.
- A pinned exporter release or container tag. Do not silently track an unpinned latest build in production.
Before installation, check the exporter release notes and run the selected binary’s --help output. Flags and supported Redis or Valkey versions can change between releases.
Install Redis Exporter
Option 1: install a verified release binary
A release binary is usually the smallest operational footprint on a Linux VPS. Obtain the archive for your architecture from the project’s official release distribution, verify its checksum when one is published, and pin the version in your configuration management.
- Unpack the archive in a temporary directory.
- Confirm that the executable matches the VPS architecture and starts with the expected version command.
- Install it as
/usr/local/bin/redis_exporterwith ownership that prevents ordinary users from replacing it. - Create a dedicated unprivileged account for the service; it does not need a login shell or a home directory.
- Record the exact release in your inventory so an upgrade can be reproduced or rolled back.
Do not run the exporter as root simply because installation was performed by root. Installation ownership and runtime privileges are separate concerns.
Option 2: build from source
Building locally is useful when your distribution or CPU architecture does not have a suitable release artifact, or when your organization requires reproducible builds. Install a supported Go toolchain, check out a specific upstream revision, build the exporter, and retain the revision alongside the binary.
- Use a clean build host or a controlled build environment.
- Pin the source revision and Go toolchain rather than building from an uncommitted working tree.
- Run the project’s tests and record the resulting binary checksum.
- Copy only the finished binary to the VPS and run it under the dedicated service account.
A source build increases maintenance responsibility: you must track security fixes, compatibility changes, and the flags exposed by the revision you built.

Option 3: run the published container image
The project publishes the oliver006/redis_exporter image through container registries. Use a specific release tag rather than an unqualified image name, and keep the image digest or tag in your deployment files. A container does not remove the need to secure the Redis credential or metrics endpoint.

docker pull oliver006/redis_exporter:<pinned-tag>
On a host where Redis listens on the VPS itself, container networking is the most common source of an apparently healthy but unusable deployment. The project documents host networking as an option:
docker run -d --name redis-exporter
--restart unless-stopped
--network host
oliver006/redis_exporter:<pinned-tag>
--redis.addr redis://127.0.0.1:6379
Host networking makes the container share the host network namespace. If your policy does not allow that, use a private container network and an address that is genuinely reachable from the container; do not assume that the container’s 127.0.0.1 is the host’s loopback interface.
Configure the Redis connection and credentials
The exporter accepts a Redis URI and also supports documented username and password settings. A URI can express the address and, when appropriate for your secret-management policy, authentication information. A password-file option is available for exporter connections and is preferable to placing a secret directly in a shell command.

redis_exporter
--redis.addr redis://127.0.0.1:6379
Replace the address with the private Redis address when Redis is on another host. Keep the URI free of credentials if a password file or protected service configuration can be used instead.
Use username, password, or a password file
redis_exporter
--redis.addr redis://127.0.0.1:6379
--redis.user monitor
--redis.password-file /etc/redis-exporter/redis.password
Flag names can differ by exporter release, so confirm them with that binary’s --help output. Restrict the password file to the service account or root, set permissions such as 0640 only when the group is also tightly controlled, and never commit it to source control.
Shell history and process listings are common leakage paths. Avoid typing a long-lived password as a command-line argument on an interactive shell, and do not place secrets in world-readable Docker Compose files, public environment dumps, or support bundles. If your secret store can render a root-readable file at service start, use that rather than copying credentials into multiple hosts.
Authentication failures to distinguish
- A wrong password or username causes Redis to reject the connection; the exporter process may remain running while collection fails.
- A malformed URI can prevent the exporter from starting or make it target the wrong database endpoint.
- A network route or firewall problem looks different from an authentication failure: the exporter cannot complete a TCP connection at all.
- After changing an ACL user, restart or reload the exporter according to the service method you chose and verify a fresh scrape.
Run the exporter as a dedicated systemd service
For a binary installation on the VPS, systemd provides restart behavior, an explicit service identity, and a place to document the command line. Create the service account and protected configuration directory first.

Some hardening directives require a systemd version with the corresponding feature. If a directive prevents a legitimate read, inspect the journal and narrow the policy rather than disabling all isolation.
- Run
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable and start the unit with
sudo systemctl enable --now redis-exporter. - Inspect startup output with
sudo systemctl status redis-exporterandsudo journalctl -u redis-exporter -n 100 --no-pager. - Confirm that the listener is bound to the intended address and port, not to every public interface.
If Prometheus is on another host, replace the loopback listener with the VPS’s private interface address or place a private reverse proxy in front of it. Binding to a public address should not be the default.
Secure the metrics endpoint
Metrics can reveal memory usage, client counts, command activity, replication state, and persistence behavior. Treat the endpoint as operational data, not as a public status page.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Bind to
127.0.0.1:9121when Prometheus runs on the same VPS. - For a remote Prometheus, bind only to a private interface and permit inbound traffic on the metrics port from the Prometheus host’s private address.
- Do not publish the exporter port through a public cloud security group, router, or reverse proxy unless you have a specific, authenticated design.
- Keep the Redis port separate from the exporter port; allowing Prometheus to scrape metrics does not require exposing Redis commands to Prometheus.
- Protect the service unit, password file, container configuration, and backups containing those files.
- Run the exporter unprivileged and grant it no write access to application data.
For a host firewall, create a rule whose source is the Prometheus server and whose destination is the exporter port. For example, an administration team might express that policy with its firewall tooling as “allow TCP 9121 from the Prometheus private address; deny other sources.” Use the equivalent rule in your VPS provider’s network firewall as well.
Configure Prometheus to scrape Redis Exporter
Prometheus is both the collector and the time-series store in this design. Add a scrape job to its configuration, using the address where the exporter is listening:
scrape_configs:
- job_name: redis
static_configs:
- targets:
- 127.0.0.1:9121
Use the Redis VPS’s private address instead when Prometheus runs elsewhere. Keep the target pointed at the exporter, not at Redis’s native port. If you operate several Redis servers, give each target a stable label such as instance, environment, or role so dashboards and alerts identify the correct VPS.

- Validate the Prometheus configuration with the validation method provided by your Prometheus installation.
- Reload Prometheus using its supported reload mechanism or restart it during a planned change window.
- Open the Prometheus targets page and confirm that the Redis job is marked healthy.
- Query the exporter endpoint locally with an HTTP client and confirm that it returns Prometheus text rather than a connection error.
- Check that the Redis-specific series indicate a successful collection, not merely that the exporter process is alive.
A healthy exporter target proves only that Prometheus can contact the HTTP service. It does not prove that Redis authentication, routing, or collection is working.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Build useful dashboards and alerts
Begin with a small dashboard that answers whether monitoring itself works and whether Redis is approaching a workload limit. Exact metric names and labels can vary with exporter release, so inspect the series exposed by your pinned version before writing recording or alerting rules.
| Area | What to display | Operational question |
|---|---|---|
| Exporter health | Target availability, scrape duration, and the exporter’s last-scrape error indicator. | Can Prometheus collect metrics, and can the exporter collect Redis data? |
| Reachability | Redis up or connection-success state. | Is Redis responding from the exporter’s network location? |
| Memory | Used memory, configured limits, fragmentation indicators, and eviction activity where exposed. | Is the instance approaching memory pressure or evicting data? |
| Traffic | Commands processed, instantaneous command rate, rejected connections, and connected clients. | Has workload or connection behavior changed? |
| Persistence | Recent RDB save information, AOF activity where enabled, and persistence errors. | Can Redis write durable state as configured? |
| Replication | Role, replica-link state, replication offsets, and lag-related values where available. | Is a replica attached and keeping up? |
| Latency | Exporter collection duration and Redis latency-related metrics exposed by the selected version. | Is collection slowing, and is Redis response behavior changing? |
Set thresholds from your workload, memory budget, latency objective, and replication recovery requirements. There is no universal numeric threshold that is safe for every Redis deployment. For example, a connection count that is normal for one application may exhaust another application’s file-descriptor budget.
Useful alert classes include: exporter target down, Redis collection failing, sustained memory pressure, unexpected evictions, persistence errors, replication disconnected, replication lag beyond your recovery objective, and a sudden change in command or client rate. Include the VPS identity, Redis role, exporter target, and a runbook link in each alert so the on-call engineer can act without guessing.
Test the failure paths deliberately
Monitoring is not complete until you know what each failure looks like and whether an alert reaches the person responsible. Perform these tests in a maintenance window or on a staging VPS:
| Test | Expected observation | Recovery check |
|---|---|---|
| Stop Redis temporarily | The exporter remains reachable, but Redis-specific collection fails and the corresponding alert fires. | Start Redis and confirm the alert clears only after successful collections resume. |
| Use an invalid password | Exporter logs show authentication failure; Prometheus may still report the HTTP target as reachable. | Restore the protected credential and verify fresh Redis metrics. |
| Block the Redis route or port | Connection errors or timeouts appear in exporter logs and collection status. | Remove the block and confirm normal scrape results. |
| Block Prometheus from the metrics port | The Prometheus target becomes down even though the exporter may be healthy locally. | Restore the source-allow rule and verify target health. |
| Introduce slow persistence in a controlled environment | Persistence-related and latency-related signals change according to the Redis version and workload. | Confirm the runbook identifies whether the cause is disk, memory pressure, or application load. |
| Disconnect a replica in a test environment | Replication state and lag indicators change; the replication alert fires. | Reconnect the replica and verify recovery, not merely process availability. |
These are operational tests you should perform yourself; they are not guarantees of a particular alert timing. Record the expected signal, notification route, and clearing condition in the runbook.
Troubleshoot common installation problems
The exporter service exits immediately
Read the systemd journal or container logs first. Common causes are an unsupported flag, a malformed Redis URI, a missing password file, a permission error, or a port already in use. Run the exact installed binary with --help and compare every flag with the unit file. Check that the service account can read the credential file but cannot modify the binary or unrelated system files.
Best Value
The exporter is up but Redis metrics are absent
Test the Redis address from the exporter’s network namespace. On a container deployment, remember that container loopback is not host loopback unless host networking is enabled. Check authentication separately from routing, then inspect exporter logs for timeouts, ACL denials, or protocol errors. A successful HTTP response from the exporter alone is not enough.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPrometheus reports the target as down
Confirm the target address and port, then test connectivity from the Prometheus host rather than from your laptop. Review VPS firewall rules, cloud security-group rules, and the exporter bind address. If the exporter listens only on localhost while Prometheus is remote, Prometheus cannot connect by design; bind to a private interface or move Prometheus onto the same host.
Metrics changed after an upgrade
Compare release notes, the output of the new binary’s help command, and the labels and names exposed at the endpoint. Update dashboards and alert rules deliberately. Keep the previous binary or image tag available so you can roll back if a compatibility change affects collection.
Maintenance, upgrades, and version boundaries
Pin the exporter release, Redis or Valkey version, and container image tag. Before upgrading, review exporter and Redis release notes for changed flags, supported server versions, authentication behavior, and metric names. Upgrade in a test environment, validate the Prometheus target, and inspect key dashboards before changing production.
Keep a short inventory containing the exporter version, Redis endpoint, listener address, credential-file location, Prometheus job name, firewall source, and rollback artifact. Rotate the Redis monitoring credential according to the same policy used for other service accounts, then restart or reload the exporter and verify collection.
If you use Redis Software rather than a standalone Redis server, do not automatically apply the standalone exporter workflow. Redis documents a separate version-2 Prometheus metrics endpoint for Redis Software 8.0. Determine which product you operate before choosing between that native endpoint and redis_exporter.
Which deployment method fits a Linux VPS?
| Priority | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fewest moving parts | Verified binary plus systemd | No container runtime is required, and host-local Redis access is straightforward. |
| Reproducible image-based operations | Pinned container image | Version, restart policy, and rollback can be managed as deployment data. |
| Custom platform or architecture | Controlled source build | You can produce a binary for your environment, but you own the build and update process. |
| Monitoring survives a Redis-host outage | Exporter and Prometheus on a separate private host | The monitoring stack is isolated, although network routing and credential protection become more important. |
For a single VPS, a systemd-managed exporter bound to loopback and scraped by a local or private Prometheus server is usually the simplest secure baseline. Choose containers or a separate monitoring host when your existing operations platform provides a clear benefit, not merely because the exporter can run there.
