To join a Minecraft server, use the edition and release the server supports, sign in with a Microsoft Account, and enter the exact address and port supplied by its operator. Java Edition connects through Multiplayer; Bedrock Edition uses Play > Servers. A Java client cannot normally join a Bedrock server, and a Bedrock client cannot normally join a Java server unless the operator has configured a compatible cross-play solution.
This guide explains every connection route—public servers, private servers, LAN worlds, Realms and self-hosted worlds—plus port numbers, account requirements, version errors, console restrictions and a troubleshooting sequence that avoids guesswork.

Choose the connection method that fits your situation
The right menu and the information you need depend on where the world runs. Decide this before entering an address.
| Connection type | Best for | Edition and platform reach | Always online? | Network/setup burden | Cost and capacity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LAN world | People on the same home or school network | Players must use the compatible edition; Java uses Open to LAN | No; the host must have the world open | Low, provided devices are on the same local network | No separate server fee; capacity depends on the host and game settings |
| Direct online server | A public server or a privately hosted address | Must match the server’s accepted edition and release | Only while the server is running | Enter a hostname or IP and, when supplied, a port | Set by the operator |
| Realms | A private, invitation-based world without home-server administration | Cross-platform only within one edition | Yes, while the subscription is active | Low; the owner manages invitations | Bedrock Realms is $3.99/month for the owner plus two simultaneous players; Bedrock Realms Plus is $7.99/month for the owner plus 10; Java Realms is $7.99/month for the owner plus 10. These are prices shown on Minecraft’s current Realms page accessed in 2026. |
| Self-hosted server | Owners who need control over files, settings and access | Choose Java or Bedrock server software and give players the matching details | Only while the host machine and service are running | Highest; firewall, router and allowlist administration may be required | No Minecraft hosting fee, but the operator supplies hardware, bandwidth and maintenance |
| Third-party hosting | An always-online world without exposing a home network | Depends on the host’s edition and version support | Usually, according to the hosting plan | Lower home-network burden; the operator still manages the server | Provider pricing and player limits vary; verify current terms before signing up |
Requirements to check before you enter anything
- Edition: Confirm whether the destination accepts Java Edition or Bedrock Edition. “Minecraft” alone is not enough information.
- Release and protocol: Your client must speak a release the server accepts. A snapshot, preview or patch that is newer or older than the server can fail even when the major version looks similar.
- Microsoft Account: Multiplayer requires you to be signed in with one. This is stated in Minecraft’s official multiplayer guide.
- Permissions: Microsoft/Xbox privacy and family settings must allow multiplayer and, where relevant, communication or invitations.
- Console subscription: Console players need the platform’s required paid online-multiplayer subscription in addition to Minecraft access.
- Connection details: Obtain the server’s hostname or numeric IP address, its port if the operator gives one, and any password, allowlist approval or invitation required by that server.
- Reliable clock and updates: Let the launcher or platform finish an update before testing. Do not switch to a snapshot or preview build merely because its number appears close to the server’s number.
How to join a server in Java Edition
Java Edition uses the desktop launcher and the Multiplayer screen. The following procedure works for a one-time connection or a saved server entry.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Launch Minecraft Java Edition and wait at the title screen.
- Select Multiplayer.
- Read the online-play warning and accept it if prompted. If the button is unavailable, return to the Microsoft Account and privacy-permission checks above.
- For a one-time connection, select Direct Connection.
- Enter the server address exactly as supplied. A hostname can look like
play.example.com; an IP address is a sequence of numbers. If the operator supplied a non-default port, include it in the format the game requests, normallyaddress:port. - Select Join Server. The game will perform a version and network handshake before loading the world.
Save a Java server for later
- From Multiplayer, select Add Server.
- Enter a descriptive name, such as the community or friend’s world name. The name is only a local label and does not change where you connect.
- Enter the exact server address and port supplied by the operator.
- Save the entry.
- Select it in the server list and choose Join Server.
If the server owner tells you to use a particular release, choose that release in the launcher before connecting. The official guide specifically warns that snapshot clients may need to be switched back to the latest fully released patch. A green status indicator in the list does not override an incompatible protocol.
How to join a server in Bedrock Edition
Bedrock Edition uses the Play screen. Menu wording can vary slightly by platform, but the path is the same on supported Bedrock devices.
- Start Minecraft Bedrock Edition and select Play.
- Open the Servers tab.
- Featured servers appear in the list and can be entered with Join Server.
- For a server that is not featured, scroll to the bottom and select Add Server.
- Enter the server name, server address and port. Use the port supplied by the administrator rather than guessing.
- Select Play to connect immediately, or Save to keep the server in your list.
Friends and Realms in Bedrock
The Friends tab shows eligible friends who are online and Realms invitations. If an owner sends a Realm invitation code, select Join Realm and enter that code. A friend’s ordinary hosted world may disappear from the list when that friend stops hosting; a Realm remains available while its subscription and access permissions are active.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat address and port should you use?
Only the server operator can tell you which public address is correct. Ask for the complete hostname or numeric IP and the port, including any unusual port number. Do not replace a public address with 127.0.0.1, a router address or another local address unless you are connecting from the machine that hosts the server and the administrator explicitly instructed you to do so.

Bedrock default ports
Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server documentation lists 19132 and 19133 as the configured default IPv4 and IPv6 server ports. The actual server configuration can differ, so treat these as documented defaults, not a universal answer for every Bedrock host. The firewall must allow whichever ports the server is configured to use.
Connecting to a local Bedrock server on Windows
For a Bedrock Dedicated Server running on the same Windows machine as the client, Microsoft documents enabling loopback and using 127.0.0.1 with port 19132. Follow Microsoft’s current loopback-enablement procedure for the Windows build in use; a local connection does not prove that the server is reachable from the internet.
Hostname versus numeric IP
- A hostname is easier for an operator to keep stable when the underlying IP changes.
- A numeric IP can be copied directly but may change for a home connection.
- A port is separate from the address. Omitting a required non-default port sends the client to the wrong service even when the hostname is correct.
- Copy punctuation, dots and digits exactly. A trailing space or an extra colon can produce a misleading connection error.
Joining a LAN world
LAN is for devices on the same local network, such as the same home router. It is not a substitute for an internet server.

Java LAN steps
- Have the host open the single-player world.
- Open the pause menu and choose Open to LAN.
- Choose the permitted game mode and whether cheats are enabled, then select Start LAN World.
- On another Java client connected to the same network, open Multiplayer and wait for the LAN world to appear.
- Select the world and choose Join Server.
If it does not appear, verify that both devices are on the same network rather than one using a guest Wi-Fi network, mobile data or a VPN. Local firewall rules can also block discovery. The host must keep the world open for others to remain connected.

Bedrock local play
Bedrock local worlds are normally exposed through the Friends area when multiplayer is enabled and devices can discover one another. If discovery fails, check that every player is signed in, multiplayer permissions allow local play, and the devices are not isolated by guest-network settings. Use a dedicated server address only when the administrator has actually configured one.
Using Minecraft Realms
Realms is Minecraft’s private, cloud-hosted option. The owner creates the world and invites players; invited users do not need to configure router forwarding or keep the owner’s computer running.
| Plan shown on Minecraft’s current Realms page (accessed 2026) | Edition | Simultaneous players | Monthly price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Realms | Bedrock | Owner plus 2 players | $3.99/month |
| Realms Plus | Bedrock | Owner plus 10 players | $7.99/month |
| Realms | Java | Owner plus 10 players | $7.99/month |
Prices and plan details are the figures displayed on that page when accessed in 2026 and can vary by region, taxes or later product changes. Realms is cross-platform only within the same edition: Java players join Java Realms, while Bedrock players join Bedrock Realms.
How an invitee joins
- Sign in with the Microsoft Account that received the invitation.
- Open Minecraft’s multiplayer area: Play and the relevant Realm entry in Bedrock, or Multiplayer and the Realm entry in Java.
- Accept the invitation or enter the Realm invitation code through Join Realm where that control is offered.
- Confirm that your edition and release match the Realm before selecting the entry.
The owner can remove access. If someone is harassing players, blocking that account prevents contact in Minecraft and through Xbox Live and stops the person from joining your Realm.

Can Java and Bedrock players play together?
Java and Bedrock are separate editions with different networking protocols. A normal Java server accepts Java clients, and a normal Bedrock server accepts Bedrock clients. Buying both editions or signing into the same Microsoft Account does not merge them.
Cross-play on a server is possible only when the operator has installed and correctly maintained a compatibility setup that accepts both client types. Ask the operator which edition to select, whether cross-play is enabled, which releases are supported and whether Java or Bedrock players must use a special address or port. Minecraft’s official Realms information does not endorse a particular third-party bridge, and Realms itself remains same-edition only.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Minecraft says “Outdated Client” or “Outdated Server”
Microsoft explains that these messages indicate a protocol-version mismatch between the client and server. Protocol changes commonly track minor releases, but even patch releases can differ, so matching only the first two numbers is not sufficient.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFix the mismatch
- Read the complete error and note whether it says Outdated Client or Outdated Server. The wording indicates which side is behind relative to the other.
- Ask the operator which exact release the server currently accepts.
- Update Minecraft if the server has moved forward and your platform offers that release.
- If the server intentionally remains on an older supported release, select that release in the Java launcher where possible. Bedrock generally follows the platform’s installed release, so the operator may need to update the server instead.
- Leave snapshots, previews and betas unless the server explicitly supports them.
- Restart the launcher or console after an update, then reconnect using the same address and port.
If no compatible release is available, only the server operator can change the server software or wait for a client release. Reinstalling the game without identifying the protocol mismatch rarely solves the cause.

Troubleshooting in the order most likely to work
Change one variable at a time. This sequence separates a wrong address from a stopped server, a permissions problem and a protocol problem.
- Re-enter the details: Copy the hostname or IP and port from the operator again. Check for swapped digits, missing punctuation and an omitted non-default port.
- Confirm availability: Ask whether the server is running, undergoing maintenance or restricting access with an allowlist. A perfectly formatted address cannot connect to a stopped service.
- Confirm edition: Check that you selected Java or Bedrock as the operator specified. For a cross-play server, follow its special compatibility instructions.
- Match the release: Update or roll back the client to the server’s accepted release. Treat an “Outdated Client” or “Outdated Server” message as a protocol issue first.
- Check the account: Sign out and back in to the Microsoft Account if multiplayer controls appear stuck. Review Xbox/Microsoft privacy and family settings for multiplayer and communication permissions.
- Check console access: Verify that the required paid online subscription is active on the console profile being used.
- Check firewalls: On a self-hosted Bedrock server, confirm that the configured ports—not just the documented defaults—are allowed through the host firewall and any router firewall.
- Check local Windows loopback: For a Bedrock Dedicated Server on the same Windows computer, apply Microsoft’s documented loopback enablement and test
127.0.0.1:19132. - Check service and access status: If other players also fail, consult Minecraft service-status information and ask the operator whether your account, IP or gamertag is allowlisted.
Common symptoms and what they suggest
| Symptom | Most useful first check |
|---|---|
| The server is not listed | Use Direct Connection/Add Server, verify edition, and ask whether discovery is disabled or the server is offline. |
| “Unable to connect to world” on Bedrock | Recheck address and port, then verify firewall access and that the server accepts the current Bedrock release. |
| “Outdated Client” or “Outdated Server” | Match the exact client and server protocol versions. |
| Friends cannot see a LAN world | Confirm the same local network, disable guest-network isolation, and inspect local firewall rules. |
| Realm invitation is missing | Sign into the invited Microsoft Account, open the correct edition, and ask the owner to resend or verify the invitation. |
| Only one player is rejected | Check that player’s privacy permissions, subscription, release and allowlist status rather than changing the server address. |
Self-hosting: what the operator must prepare
A self-hosted server is different from entering someone else’s address. The operator must install the correct Java or Bedrock server software, keep it running, select a supported release, permit the server through the host firewall and, for internet access, configure the home router and public address. Players then need the externally reachable hostname or IP and the configured port.
Bedrock Dedicated Server documentation lists 19132 for IPv4 and 19133 for IPv6 as defaults, but an operator can configure different values. The firewall and router must match the actual configuration. A local test using 127.0.0.1 validates only the host machine; it does not validate router forwarding, public DNS or remote-player access.

Minecraft recommends Realms for people who are less comfortable with networking. Third-party hosting can also remove much of the home-router work, but edition support, player limits, backups, billing and version availability differ by provider. Verify those terms directly before moving a world.
If you want an always-online server without home-router work, Godlike.Host offers Minecraft Java, Bedrock and modded hosting with a Pterodactyl-based panel and SFTP access. In our 13 October 2026 test, a Java (Paper) server on a 16 GB plan in Amsterdam reached “Done” in 6.25 s on its first start.
Quick Recap
Privacy and safety when joining
- Do not post your Microsoft Account password, recovery codes, home address or other personal details in server chat.
- Join only servers and Realms operated by people or communities you trust.
- Use Minecraft’s mute controls for rude or spam accounts.
- Block users who should not contact you or join your Realm. Blocking applies in Minecraft and through Xbox Live.
- Ask the operator how bans, allowlists, backups and moderation work before inviting younger players.
- For a private world, use invitations or an allowlist instead of publishing the address.
One-page connection checklist
- Identify the edition: Java or Bedrock.
- Sign in with a Microsoft Account and verify multiplayer permissions.
- On a console, verify the platform’s paid online subscription.
- Obtain the exact hostname/IP, port and any invitation or allowlist approval.
- Use Multiplayer in Java or Play > Servers in Bedrock.
- Enter the details exactly, saving the entry if you will return.
- Match the server’s exact release; avoid unsupported snapshots and previews.
- If connection fails, work through the troubleshooting order instead of changing several settings at once.
