The Starlink Ethernet Adapter goes between the Starlink cable and the Gen 2 router. The chain is Starlink cable → adapter → router. A separate Ethernet cable then runs from the adapter to your wired device or to a third-party router’s WAN port. Bypass mode is a separate setting and you don’t need it just to plug in one wired device.
Check whether your kit needs the adapter
Starlink says the Gen 2 router included with Standard Actuated or High Performance kits has no built-in Ethernet ports. The adapter is how you get a wired connection from that router. Other hardware is different: Starlink says Router Mini has one latching Ethernet LAN port and Router 3 has two LAN ports. Some configurations also expose Ethernet through the power supply or an included cable. Confirm your kit before buying. See Starlink’s article on Ethernet ports on the WiFi router.

| Your hardware | Wired connection |
|---|---|
| Gen 2 router (Standard Actuated or High Performance kit) | No built-in ports. Use the Ethernet Adapter. |
| Router Mini | One latching LAN port, so no Gen 2 adapter is needed. |
| Router 3 | Two LAN ports, so no Gen 2 adapter is needed. |
| Other kits | May offer Ethernet through the power supply or an included cable. Check your kit. |
What you need
- A working Starlink setup that is online, with a Gen 2 router.
- The Starlink Ethernet Adapter.
- A standard Ethernet cable for the adapter-to-device link.
- Optional: a network switch if you need more than one wired port, or a third-party router if you want to replace Starlink’s routing.
Connect the adapter step by step
- Confirm the Starlink system is online in the Starlink app and that you have the Gen 2 router.
- Unplug the Starlink cable from the router.
- Plug that Starlink cable into the Starlink Ethernet Adapter.
- Connect the adapter to the router.
- Run an Ethernet cable from the adapter to your wired device, such as a PC, console or smart TV.
- Check the Starlink app and the device’s network status to confirm it has a connection.
Starlink gives this adapter sequence for Standard Actuated setups in its third-party router guide. LED behavior can vary with firmware, so rely on the app and the device’s link status.
Connect a third-party router
Starlink allows you to use your own router. Follow the same steps above, but in step 5 run the Ethernet cable from the adapter to the WAN port of the third-party router. Your wired devices and Wi-Fi then connect to that router.

Do you need bypass mode?
Not for a single wired device. Bypass mode turns off the Starlink router’s Wi-Fi features so a third-party router can handle routing. It is enabled in the Starlink app under Settings, as explained in Starlink’s bypass mode article. Starlink says leaving bypass mode requires a factory reset. If you plan to keep using Starlink’s Wi-Fi, leave it off.
If you’re also setting up Gen 2 Wi-Fi for the first time, connect to the default STARLINK network, then use the app to rename it and set a password. The password is optional, but Starlink recommends one. See the Gen 2 router setup guide.

Need more than one wired port?
Starlink says you can connect a network switch to the adapter to add wired ports. The switch is only an expansion. It does not replace the adapter on kits that need one.
