To get Roku on a Vizio Smart TV, connect a Roku streaming player or Streaming Stick to the TV’s HDMI port, select that HDMI input with the Vizio remote, then follow Roku’s prompts to connect to the internet and activate the device. The supported setup described here uses a separate Roku device; the cited instructions do not establish installing Roku OS as a SmartCast app.
What you need to connect Roku to a Vizio TV
- A Roku streaming player or Streaming Stick. You need one only if you do not already own a Roku device; it is separate hardware, not a Roku app installation on the TV.
- An available HDMI input on the Vizio TV. Roku says its streaming players work with any television that has an HDMI connection. Check your particular TV’s ports and manual, since configurations vary by model.
- Power for the Roku device and an internet connection for setup, streaming, and software updates. Roku setup uses Wi-Fi, and some player models also support Ethernet.
Use the HDMI cable included with the Roku player when applicable. If you need a replacement, Roku specifies High Speed HDMI for TVs limited to 720p or 1080p, and Premium High Speed HDMI for 4K/HDR TVs. A Streaming Stick plugs directly into HDMI. Roku’s setup instructions recommend the supplied cable.

How to set up Roku on a Vizio Smart TV
- Find an open HDMI port. Note its number, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2. Port counts differ by model: for example, Vizio lists three HDMI inputs for its V4K65M-0804 model, which should not be assumed for every Vizio TV. Check your model’s product information or manual for its specific inputs.
- Connect the Roku to HDMI. Attach the player with its supplied cable, or plug a Streaming Stick into the selected port.
- Connect the Roku to power. Use the supplied power cable. A TV’s USB port may not supply enough power to a Streaming Stick; if Roku displays a low-power warning, connect the supplied adapter to a wall outlet.
- Select the Roku input on the Vizio. Turn on the TV, press Input or Source on the Vizio remote, and choose the HDMI number used by Roku. Allow about 10 seconds for the TV to detect the device.
- Complete setup on the Roku screen. Follow the prompts to pair the Roku remote, select a language, connect to Wi-Fi or supported Ethernet, install updates, choose display settings, and activate the Roku account.
Getting 4K or HDR picture
4K and HDR require compatible Roku hardware, a compatible Vizio TV input, and compatible equipment in the signal path. If you use a receiver or soundbar between the Roku and TV, it must also support the relevant formats.
Roku’s 4K guidance gives this Vizio-specific setting path for some configurations: Menu > Input Settings > select the Roku input > Full HD Color > On. Menu names and availability can vary by Vizio model and software version. If the option is missing or named differently, consult the manual for your TV model rather than assuming the path applies to every Vizio. See Roku’s 4K setup guidance.

Fix common Roku connection problems
The Roku welcome screen does not appear
- Confirm the Roku is powered on and its HDMI connection is firmly seated.
- Use the Vizio remote to select the exact HDMI input where the Roku is connected.
- If the device is connected through another component, connect it directly to the TV to check whether that component is affecting detection.
The Roku shows a low-power warning or keeps restarting
Connect the Roku using its supplied wall adapter. Some TV USB ports do not provide enough power for the device.
Wi-Fi setup fails
- Confirm you selected the correct network and entered its case-sensitive password accurately.
- If the connection still fails, restart the router and Roku player, then try setup again.
There is no 4K or HDR picture
Check that the Roku model and Vizio TV support the desired format, and that the Roku is connected to an input configured for it. If a receiver or soundbar is in between, verify its compatibility as well. Vizio’s exact input setting depends on the TV model.

The Roku remote will not control TV power or volume
TV power and volume control depend on the Roku remote and TV combination. Roku notes that a TV may support volume control but not power control, or the reverse. A remote that navigates Roku does not necessarily control every Vizio function.

Roku Support says its streaming players can connect to any TV with an HDMI connection, and recommends using the HDMI cable supplied with the Roku device. Those instructions cover connecting an external Roku player; they do not establish a method to install Roku OS as a Vizio SmartCast app.
