To connect Outlook to Claude, use Claude’s Microsoft 365 connector with a work or school Microsoft 365 account. A Microsoft Entra Global Administrator must first grant tenant consent; for Team and Enterprise, the Claude organization Owner must also enable the connector. Then go to Customize > Connectors in Claude, choose Microsoft 365 > Connect, and sign in. Personal Outlook.com, Hotmail, and Live accounts are not supported by this connector.
There are two distinct options: the Microsoft 365 connector brings work email and calendar information into Claude, while Anthropic’s separate Claude for Outlook add-in works from within Outlook and is described as beta. Choose based on where you want to work.

Before you connect: check your account and permissions
- Account: The connector requires a work or school Microsoft 365 account associated with a Microsoft Entra tenant. Personal
@outlook.com,@hotmail.com, and@live.comaccounts are unsupported. Anthropic’s Microsoft 365 connection guide and its connector listing describe the supported account type. - Microsoft administrator: A Microsoft Entra Global Administrator must grant tenant consent before users connect. See Anthropic’s Microsoft 365 connector setup instructions.
- Claude organization: On Team or Enterprise, the organization Owner must enable Microsoft 365 under organization settings > Connectors. Anthropic says Free, Pro, and Max users do not need this organization-owner step.
If you do not have the required admin help, ask your Microsoft 365 administrator to grant consent, and—if your Claude account is Team or Enterprise—ask the organization Owner to enable the connector.

Connect Microsoft 365 in Claude
- Ask a Microsoft Entra Global Administrator to grant tenant consent for the Microsoft 365 connector.
- If you use Claude Team or Enterprise, have the organization Owner enable Microsoft 365 in the organization’s connector settings.
- In Claude, open Customize > Connectors.
- Find Microsoft 365, select Connect, and sign in with your work or school Microsoft 365 credentials.
- Start a conversation that needs Outlook information. For example, ask Claude to summarize an email conversation or find a particular thread.
Anthropic says the connector accesses Microsoft 365 when a prompt calls for connected information; it does not run background searches. If the connection fails, confirm that tenant consent was granted, that the organization Owner enabled the connector where required, and that you signed in with an eligible work or school account.

What Claude can do with Outlook data
The connector can search email threads and conversations, read message content and metadata, and review calendar information. It also connects with SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams. Claude’s access follows your Microsoft 365 permissions: as Anthropic puts it, “You can only access data you can already see in Microsoft 365.” See the connector guide for the documented capabilities and access boundary.
Searching, summarizing, and drafting
You can ask Claude to locate or summarize relevant email conversations. If you want a reply drafted without sending it, make that boundary explicit—for example: “Draft a reply to the latest email from the vendor, but don’t send it.”
Rank #2
Sending email and changing calendar events
Reading and analysis are separate from write actions. Sending a message or managing calendar events depends on administrator-enabled write tools and additional consent and setup. If Claude cannot perform a requested write action, ask your administrator whether those tools are enabled; do not assume that connecting the account grants permission to send or modify anything.
Disable or disconnect the connector
You can disable the connector for an individual conversation or disconnect it from Customize > Connectors. Anthropic says reconnecting later does not require the administrator to grant consent again if tenant consent remains active.

Microsoft 365 connector or Claude for Outlook add-in?
These are separate experiences. The connector is set up in Claude and lets it search connected Microsoft 365 content. The Claude for Outlook add-in runs inside Outlook; Anthropic describes it as a beta for inbox triage, drafting replies for you to send, and finding calendar availability.
Microsoft’s certification listing says the add-in supports Outlook 2016 or later on Windows and Mac, as well as Outlook on the web. It accesses user mail and calendar data through Microsoft Graph and the Office.js Mailbox API when directed by the user. Check Anthropic’s Claude for Microsoft 365 page and Microsoft’s add-in listing for current rollout and client availability before relying on those details.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Choose the Microsoft 365 connector when you want to ask Claude about work Outlook email or calendar information from within Claude.
- Consider the Outlook add-in when you want the Claude experience inside Outlook, subject to its beta availability and supported client.
- If you have a personal Outlook.com, Hotmail, or Live account, the Microsoft 365 connector is not an option for that account.
