How to Connect n8n to Buffer: Setup Steps, Workflow Examples, and API Limits (2026)

Connect n8n to Buffer with the MCP Client node, HTTP Streamable transport, and a Buffer API key, then learn which workflows work and where the API stops.

To connect n8n to Buffer, add an MCP Client node to your workflow and point it at Buffer’s MCP endpoint, https://mcp.buffer.com/mcp, using Bearer Auth with a Buffer API key. That is the setup Buffer documents in its official n8n guide. Once it is connected, an upstream trigger such as a new RSS item or a form submission can create drafts or run other Buffer actions. Before you build anything, check the limits: the Buffer API does not reliably provide analytics, does not read or reply to comments, cannot create or edit Start Page posts, and does not accept direct media uploads.

Setup steps, in order

  1. Create or generate a Buffer API key in your Buffer API settings. Keep it private, because anyone holding it can act on your Buffer account through the integration.

  2. In your n8n workflow, add an MCP Client node.

  3. Set Server Transport to HTTP Streamable, then set MCP Endpoint URL to https://mcp.buffer.com/mcp.

  4. Set authentication to Bearer Auth. Create a new credential, paste your Buffer API key into it, and save the credential.

  5. Select the Buffer MCP tool that matches the job, configure its inputs, and connect an upstream trigger. Add any transformations, filters, or approval logic between the trigger and the Buffer step.

n8n can run either on n8n Cloud or on a server you host yourself, and the same MCP Client steps apply to both. Test with a draft-only action first. A draft gives you a chance to check the output before anything is scheduled to publish.

Workflow examples Buffer documents

Buffer’s n8n guide describes three example workflows. They are useful starting points, but they are illustrations, not tested templates, so verify each one against your own channels and accounts before relying on it.

Logic and AI steps can sit between the trigger and the Buffer action. For example, you could filter feed items by keyword or use a language model to rewrite a headline before the draft is created.

What the Buffer API can do

Buffer’s current API is a GraphQL API for working with your own Buffer account. Its developer introduction documents creating and deleting posts, creating ideas, and retrieving channels, posts, and organization data. It is a separate product from Buffer’s older legacy API and from the APIs that social networks offer directly.

Buffer’s API Help Center lists post creation for 11 social channels: Instagram, Threads, LinkedIn, X/Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, Google Business Profiles, Mastodon, YouTube, Pinterest, and Bluesky. This list is narrower than the set of channels you can manage in the Buffer dashboard. Start Page is one example of a dashboard channel that the API does not cover.

Where the API stops

Plan these limits into any automation before you commit to it.

Plan access

Buffer announced its public API on May 27, 2026, and said it was available on every Buffer plan, including Free. Buffer’s Help Center also states that API access is available on every current plan. Request limits differ by plan, so check your plan’s limits before you set a workflow to run frequently.

Choosing between the MCP connection and a custom GraphQL integration

For most n8n users, the official MCP connection is the most direct route. Buffer’s API documentation describes a custom GraphQL integration for builders who need custom queries or application-specific behavior. The table below compares the two.

Factor Official MCP connection in n8n Custom GraphQL integration
Typical fit Workflows that use Buffer’s documented actions as n8n steps Applications or builders who need custom queries or specific application logic
Setup MCP Client node, HTTP Streamable transport, Bearer Auth with an API key Built against the GraphQL API directly; setup not described in the n8n guide
Visual triggers and steps Native to n8n, with triggers, filters, and AI steps around the Buffer tool Not stated in Buffer’s API documentation
Analytics and comments Subject to the same API limits as any API client Subject to the same API limits as any API client

Four questions should decide which route you take:

If analytics or comment operations are essential, the API may not meet the need on its own. Check the limits above before you design around it.
