How to Connect Multiple Displays to a Mac Studio

Check your Mac Studio’s chip, display resolutions, and refresh rates before connecting screens. Apple’s supported combinations and ports vary by model.

To connect multiple displays to a Mac Studio, first identify its chip and model year, then match your screens’ resolutions and refresh rates to Apple’s supported configuration for that exact model. Use its display-capable Thunderbolt or HDMI ports; a dock can help route connections but cannot raise the Mac’s display limit.

How many displays can a Mac Studio support?

The maximum depends on the Mac Studio generation, chip, and the resolution and refresh rate of the connected screens. Apple’s September 2026 support guidance lists up to five external displays for Mac Studio with M5 Max and up to eight for M5 Ultra. These are maximum counts, not a guarantee that every screen can run at its highest resolution and refresh rate at the same time.

Older Mac Studio models have different limits and port arrangements. Use Apple’s Mac Studio display support page and choose the section for your exact model before planning a setup. For the current M5 models, Apple’s configuration details are listed on its M5 Max display support page and M5 Ultra technical specifications.

Check the display combination, not just the maximum count

Write down each monitor’s native resolution and intended refresh rate, then compare the whole combination with Apple’s table for your Mac Studio. A configuration that supports a high refresh rate with one or a few screens may not support it with the maximum number attached.

Anker Laptop Docking Station Dual Monitor, 8-in-1 USB C Hub with 4K HDMI
  • The Anker Advantage: Join the 50 million+ powered by our leading technology.
  • Massive Expansion: Equipped with a USB C PD-IN charging port, 2 USB-A data ports, 2 HDMI ports, an Ethernet port, and a microSD/SD card reader, giving you an incredible range of functions—all from a single USB-C port.
  • Dual HDMI Display: Stream or mirror content to a single device in stunning 4K@60Hz, or hook up two displays to both HDMI ports in 4K@30Hz. Note: For macOS, the display on both external monitors will be identical.
  • Power Delivery Compatible: Compatible with USB-C Power Delivery to provide high-speed pass-through charging up to 85W. Please note: 100W PD wall charger and USB-C to C cable required.
  • Compatibility: Supports USB-C, USB4, and Thunderbolt connections. Compatible with Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.

M5 Max examples

  • Five displays: Apple specifies four displays up to 6K at 60 Hz or 4K at 165 Hz over Thunderbolt, plus one display up to 5K at 60 Hz over HDMI.
  • Some lower-count configurations: Apple lists support for up to 8K at 60 Hz, 5K at 120 Hz, or 4K at 240 Hz. These are configuration-dependent maxima, not settings available across every display count.

M5 Ultra example

  • Eight displays: Apple lists up to 6K at 60 Hz or 4K at 165 Hz for all eight displays in the specified configuration, which requires a supported display daisy chain or dock.
  • Some lower-count configurations: Apple also lists up to 8K at 60 Hz, 5K at 120 Hz, or 4K at 240 Hz for certain setups. Check the exact model’s configuration table for the combination you plan to use.

Choose the right Mac Studio ports

Use ports that support video on your particular model. On M5 Max, displays connect through the rear Thunderbolt 5 and HDMI ports; the two front USB-C ports do not support external displays. M5 Ultra’s front ports are Thunderbolt and can be used for displays as well as its other supported display connections. Port layouts and capabilities differ across earlier generations, so do not assume an older Studio follows the M5 arrangement.

Use a cable that matches the Mac port and the monitor’s input. If you are connecting several displays, observe any port-group or connection requirements in Apple’s table, rather than assuming that any available port can be used interchangeably.

Connect the displays

  1. Identify your model: On the Mac, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. Note the chip and model information, then find the corresponding display-support section on Apple’s Mac Studio support page.
  2. Check the monitors: Confirm each display’s input, native resolution, and target refresh rate. Compare the full set of screens with the supported combinations for your model.
  3. Connect to supported ports: Attach each display to the appropriate Thunderbolt or HDMI port using compatible cables. Do not use M5 Max’s front USB-C ports for video.
  4. Start with the highest-resolution display: Apple advises connecting the display with the highest resolution first. Make sure the Mac and every display have power.
  5. Add a dock or daisy chain only when the configuration calls for it: Verify that the equipment supports the display count and modes you need, and follow Apple’s requirements for that model.

When to use a dock or daisy chain

A supported Thunderbolt dock or display daisy chain can route multiple displays through a Thunderbolt connection. It does not increase the Mac Studio’s maximum supported display count. For example, Apple specifies a supported dock or daisy chain for the listed eight-display M5 Ultra configuration. Check compatibility with the Mac, displays, and required resolution and refresh rate before choosing one.

Troubleshoot a dark display or unexpected resolution

If a screen stays dark or appears at a lower resolution than expected, check the connection and the supported mode before assuming the Mac can drive the desired setup.
