How to Connect Matter Devices to Samsung SmartThings

Pair a Matter device with SmartThings using its QR code or setup code, and check whether your controller and network support the device’s connection type.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To add a Matter device, open SmartThings and go to Devices > Add (+) > Add Device, then scan the device’s Matter QR code or enter its setup code. Choose a compatible SmartThings controller and room, and follow the prompts to connect it to Wi-Fi or Thread. Before starting, check the device’s network type and make sure your controller is online; Thread devices also need access to a Thread border router.

Before you add a Matter device

Check the device and its network type

Look for the Matter mark and follow the manufacturer’s setup instructions. Find out whether the device connects over Wi-Fi, Thread, or Ethernet: a Thread device needs a Thread border router, while Wi-Fi or Ethernet devices do not require Thread. Some compatible controllers include a Thread border router; otherwise, you need a separate one.

For SmartThings’ general device-compatibility options, Samsung recommends searching by product or model, scanning a product QR code, checking supported devices, or using Scan nearby while the device is powered on and in pairing mode. See Samsung’s SmartThings device compatibility guide.

Confirm SmartThings and controller compatibility

You need the SmartThings app on a phone to commission the device during setup, and a supported Matter controller to control it afterward. Add and configure the controller in your SmartThings location, then make sure it is online. Samsung’s Matter setup instructions name the SmartThings 2018 Hub and Aeotec Smart Home Hub, and describe Matter support on the SmartThings 2015 Hub for Wi-Fi or LAN devices. The article dates to 2023, so check Samsung’s current support information for your exact hub model and firmware rather than relying on that older list as a current buying guide.

Aqara Smart Home Hub M3 for Advanced Automation, Matter Controller, IR
  • [Multi-Protocol Hub with Matter Bridge] The M3 is a versatile hub supporting Aqara Zigbee and Thread devices. It integrates third-party devices into the Aqara Home app. Supports advanced Matter bridge functionality, enabling Aqara-exclusive scenes and signals to sync with Matter ecosystems such as Home Assistant for seamless integration. Supports up to 127 Aqara Zigbee devices (** Not third-party Zigbee devices) and 127 Thread devices (Repeaters are needed).
  • [Edge Compatibilities and Local Automations] The M3 serves as an Edge Hub, prioritizing local control and automation. Upon integration, it supersedes existing Aqara hubs, shifting the automations among them to local operation (Some cloud-based notifications still require internet). Upgrade-friendly, it supports migrating Zigbee devices from older Aqara hubs.
  • [Smart IR Blaster with Feedback and Learning] The 360°IR blaster not only sends commands but also provides accurate status updates by detecting traditional remote use. It connects IR air conditioning units to Matter, functioning as an AC thermostat when paired with an Aqara Temperature and Humidity Sensor. (Note: Only one AC device can be exposed to Matter. Functionality may vary based on the Matter integration app. For Apple Home exposure, use Matter integration instead of HomeKit.)
  • [Optimal Wired and Wireless Connectivity] Offering both wired and wireless solutions, the smart home hub M3 provides dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4/5 GHz) with advanced WPA3 security, and a Power over Ethernet (PoE) port. The addition of a USB-C port allows for mini-UPS and power bank connections, delivering unparalleled stability. (2A USB power adapter is not included. ) . Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M3 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.
  • [Privacy-Focused with Encrypted Storage, Easy Setup and Versatile Placement] The M3 prioritizes privacy by excluding microphone or camera components. It boasts 8GB end-to-end encrypted local storage, for device lists, configuration parameters, and automation configuration data. Additionally, it includes a mount and screws for flexible placement on flat surfaces, walls, or ceilings. Magic Pair technology ensures effortless detection by the Aqara Home app upon power-up.

Samsung’s 2023 article also lists these software minimums: Android SmartThings app 1.7.91; iOS 16.2 with SmartThings app 1.6.94; and hub firmware 45.9 for the listed controllers. Treat these as historical requirements, not confirmed current minimums; follow the current app prompts or Samsung support information. A Samsung account is required to use SmartThings; see Samsung’s guide to adding and managing devices.

Add the Matter device in SmartThings

  1. Put the device in pairing mode. Use the manufacturer’s instructions; pairing steps vary by product.
  2. Open the add-device flow. In SmartThings, tap Devices, then Add (+) and Add Device.
  3. Scan or enter the setup code. Scan the Matter QR code supplied with the device. If the camera cannot read it, choose Enter for the setup-code option and type the printed code. Samsung’s 2023 instructions say Matter setup codes may be 11 or 21 digits.
  4. Choose the controller and room. Select the compatible SmartThings hub/controller and the room where the device belongs.
  5. Connect to the prompted network. Wait while SmartThings connects to the device. If asked, select the Wi-Fi or Thread network. For a Thread device using a SmartThings 2015 Hub with a third-party border router, Samsung’s instructions say the hub and border router must share the same Wi-Fi/LAN; you may also need the Thread network key.
  6. Name and save the device. Rename it if you like, then save to finish. Available controls can vary by product and implementation; Matter compatibility does not guarantee identical features across devices.

Know when you need a Thread border router

The device’s transport determines whether a Thread border router is needed. A Wi-Fi or Ethernet Matter device does not need Thread; a Thread Matter device does. Check whether your compatible controller has Thread border-router capability built in. If it does not, a separate compatible border router may be needed. Samsung documents a third-party border-router arrangement for the SmartThings 2015 Hub, with both devices on the same Wi-Fi/LAN and a Thread network key potentially required. Confirm that the exact hardware and firmware are supported before relying on this setup.

Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M100 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.

Share an onboarded device with another platform

Matter multi-admin can let an already-added device connect to another supported smart-home platform. In SmartThings, open the Matter device and select More (⋮) > Share with other services > Share device. Then scan or enter the generated sharing code in the other platform’s app. This is a separate credential from the QR code or setup code printed with the device. Samsung’s 2023 support article says a device may connect to up to five services; check current platform support and limits because they can change.

Troubleshoot Matter setup problems

  • The QR code will not scan: Make sure it is fully visible and well lit. If scanning still fails, enter the printed setup code instead.
  • The controller is missing from the list: Check that it is configured in the correct SmartThings location and online. Samsung notes that an offline controller may not appear as a selectable option.
  • The device is not found or setup stalls: Confirm it is in pairing mode and near the phone commissioning it and the controller during onboarding.
  • The network is weak or incompatible: Move the device closer to network equipment and check the manufacturer’s supported Wi-Fi band and network security type.
  • The device still will not connect: Restart the app, device, or controller as appropriate. Factory-reset the device only as directed by its manufacturer, then try onboarding again.

If the issue is with finding a non-Matter SmartThings product, Samsung’s general compatibility flow also offers brand/model search, QR scan, and nearby scan. Its general add-device guide notes that some products require pressing a physical button to enable smart features; follow the specific manufacturer’s instructions rather than treating that as a universal Matter step.
