WordPress.com accounts on paid plans qualify; new free sites can use MCP for their first 30 days. Eligible self-hosted sites connected through Jetpack need a Jetpack AI or Jetpack Complete plan.
For most users, the simplest setup is to enable MCP in WordPress.com, then connect the official WordPress.com connector in Claude. Claude Code users can instead add the WordPress.com MCP endpoint with one terminal command.

Check that your WordPress site is eligible
The supported connection described here uses WordPress.com’s MCP server, at https://public-api.wordpress.com/wpcom/v2/mcp/v1. WordPress.com says MCP is available on paid plans. A new free WordPress.com site can use MCP during its first 30 days. A self-hosted WordPress site can use the same endpoint if it is connected through Jetpack and has Jetpack AI or Jetpack Complete.

| Other self-hosted WordPress site | Not established as eligible for the official WordPress.com MCP service | See the self-hosted caveat below |
The official WordPress.com instructions describe this as a WordPress.com service; they do not establish that every self-hosted WordPress installation can connect in the same way.
Connect Claude Desktop or Claude in a browser
-
In your WordPress.com account settings, enable MCP access. WordPress.com’s support guide says: “Before you connect Claude, enable MCP (Model Context Protocol) access on your WordPress.com account.”
-
In Claude, open Settings → Connectors. For Claude Desktop, WordPress.com’s guide directs users through Admin → Settings → Connectors.
-
Choose Browse connectors, search for WordPress.com, and select the official connector.

Connect using Claude Code
In a terminal, add the WordPress.com MCP server with the documented command:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →claude mcp add --transport http wpcom-mcp https://public-api.wordpress.com/wpcom/v2/mcp/v1
-
Run the command in the environment where you use Claude Code.
-
Start Claude Code and enter
/mcp. -
Complete the browser-based account authorization when prompted.
WordPress.com says the MCP server uses OAuth 2.1 for browser authorization, so this setup does not require a separate client secret or manual token management. Follow the current WordPress.com MCP documentation if the command or authentication flow changes.
What Claude can do once connected
The available actions depend on the tools enabled for your account. WordPress.com documents using the connection to retrieve site settings, traffic data, posts, and comments; create, edit, and organize posts, pages, categories, and tags; manage comments; and update media. The connector listing describes 60+ abilities, but that figure does not mean every tool is enabled for every account.
Recommended Free Tools
Try specific requests such as:
- “Show me my latest posts.”
- “Suggest 10 new blog post topics to write about.”
- “Summarize recent comments on my blog.”
- “Write and save a draft post about [topic] in my usual style.”
- “Add an excerpt to my latest draft post.”
- “Change the status of my draft post ‘[title]’ to published.”
Claude can help with drafting and can make a publishing-status change when the relevant tool is available. Treat publishing and other consequential edits as actions to review deliberately: inspect the content and confirm the intended change rather than assuming the connection is an unattended publishing system. WordPress.com’s support guide includes changing a draft’s status to published as an example of a supported request.
Best Value
Understand authorization and revoke access
WordPress.com describes the connection as OAuth 2.1 browser authorization. Its documentation says credentials are not stored on your computer or shared with the AI client, and that the connection uses expiring access tokens. The Claude connector listing says it accesses resources approved by the user and that each change is confirmed. These are statements from the product providers; for a narrower workflow, enable only the tools you need.
To disconnect later, go to Security → Connected Apps in your WordPress.com account and remove the connected AI client. See WordPress.com’s MCP documentation for its account and access details.
Do not confuse MCP with WordPress editor AI
WordPress.org also documents a separate Settings → Connectors workflow for configuring an AI provider for use in the editor, with features such as image generation, excerpts, and alt text. That plugin setup is not the same as connecting Claude as an MCP client to manage WordPress.com site data.

The WordPress.org documentation says API keys entered on the Connectors screen are stored in the database and masked in the interface, but not encrypted. Site owners who do not want keys stored there can use environment variables or PHP constants instead. Details are in the WordPress.org Connectors settings documentation.
What about a self-hosted site without eligible Jetpack?
Automattic’s separate wordpress-mcp repository documents direct self-hosted setup routes, including JWT and legacy Application Password authentication. The repository was archived on September 17, 2026, so it is not the default current route and its compatibility with a particular site or Claude setup is uncertain. Check its archived setup guide and verify compatibility before installing or configuring it. For Jetpack-connected sites that meet the plan requirement, use the current WordPress.com MCP route instead.
