Google Drive and the separate Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides connectors do different jobs: Drive supports file search and retrieval, while the format-specific connectors support live editing and creation.

Connect your Google account and enable connectors
- In Claude, open the plus menu and go to Connectors.
- Authenticate with the Google account that already has access to the files you intend to use. Anthropic requires Google authentication for these Workspace connectors.
- Turn on Google Drive for search, retrieval, and Drive-related actions.
- If you want live editing or file creation, also enable the relevant separate connector: Google Docs, Google Sheets, or Google Slides. You can toggle individual connectors from the chat interface.
For Claude Team and Enterprise accounts, an Owner or Primary Owner must enable connectors at the account level before users can authenticate. Owners also determine whether certain actions can run without asking each time; actions are approval-gated by default.

Add only the files you want Claude to use
For a chat
- Open the chat and choose Add from Google Drive.
- Select a recent file or paste its Google Drive URL. Repeat to add more than one file if needed.
- Ask your question with the selected files as context. The number of files you can add is subject to the conversation’s context window.
For a private project
- Open the project and go to Files.
- Click the plus button and choose Drive.
- Select a recent file or paste its URL.
Anthropic currently documents Drive-file addition to private projects; this option is disabled for shared projects. Selecting or linking files gives you a file-by-file way to provide context. The documented controls do not establish a user-configurable, folder-wide allow-list or global Drive scope.

Use the live Docs, Sheets, and Slides connectors
To edit a Google file live, paste its Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides link, or explicitly ask Claude to create that format by name—for example, “Create a Google Sheet.” Asking for a generic “doc” or “deck” may instead produce a downloadable local file.
The live-editing pane is supported in Chrome on Claude web and in Claude Desktop when its built-in browser is enabled. If the pane is unavailable, choose Open in Google to continue in Google Workspace.

Drive and the format-specific connectors are separate controls. Drive supports searching and retrieving files; its documented file types include Docs, Sheets, Slides, PDFs, images, and Microsoft Office files. It can also upload files with optional conversion to Google formats, look up metadata, and add Google Docs to chats and projects. The separate Docs, Sheets, and Slides connectors are the ones for live editing and creation. Anthropic also says Claude can work with comments and suggestions in Google Docs.
Know what Claude can access—and what it reads
Claude uses the permissions of the Google account you connected. Anthropic’s Claude Help Center states: “Claude mirrors your existing permissions—you cannot access information you don’t already have access to in Google Workspace.” If that account cannot open a file, Claude cannot access it through the connector.

When Claude reads a Drive file, it extracts text only; images embedded in documents are not processed. A picture, chart, or other visual embedded in a file may therefore need to be described in text or provided separately if it is central to your question. These read limits are distinct from live editing in the format-specific connectors.
Understand connector data and privacy
Anthropic says connector data is retrieved when needed to answer a request, stored on Anthropic’s servers with its associated chat, encrypted at rest and in transit, and deleted when you delete that chat. The help page says connector data is not used to train models. It also notes a qualification: consumer users who opted into model training may have copied-and-pasted connector content, or Claude responses containing connector-derived details, used for model improvement.

Fix organization access and reconnection errors
Google shows “Access blocked”
A Google Workspace administrator may need to trust Claude as a third-party OAuth app. Anthropic’s current instructions direct administrators to Security > Access and data control > API controls > Manage third-party app access, add Claude by OAuth App Name, and set it to Trusted. Allow approximately 15 minutes for Google’s policy change to propagate.
Claude cannot reconnect to Google
- In Claude, disconnect the Google connector.
- Authenticate again with the intended Google account.
- If the reconnect still fails, remove Claude from the Google account’s connected apps and services, then reauthorize it in Claude.
When Enterprise Drive cataloging is a better fit
File-by-file selection is appropriate when you want to name the material Claude should use in a chat or private project. Anthropic documents a separate Enterprise cataloging feature for broader Drive search: an Owner or Primary Owner enables the catalog, after which users can toggle Drive search in chat.

Anthropic’s Enterprise cataloging documentation says the feature is Enterprise-only and indexes Google Docs with text extraction, up to 10 MB. Changes and deletions can take hours to appear in the index, so it is not equivalent to selecting a specific current file for a chat.
