Then use the app only in a supported conversation and approve individual reads or actions after reviewing the prompt.
A connection is not the same as a permission prompt. The connection, the provider account’s existing access, and your workspace controls determine the data and actions available. Prompt settings only determine when ChatGPT asks for confirmation. To remove access, disconnect the app or have a workspace administrator disable it.

Before you connect: identify which account and data are involved
Start with the information you actually want ChatGPT to use. An app connection does not combine all of your accounts or discover data that the selected account cannot already access.
- Choose the provider account deliberately. If a document is in a work Google Drive, Slack workspace, project system, or other organization account, authorizing a personal account will not make that document available.
- Check the account’s existing scope. The app can generally use only the files, records, channels, or actions already available to that account, subject to workspace and app restrictions.
- Separate personal and organizational use. A connection made in a personal ChatGPT account is not governed by your employer’s workspace settings in the same way as a Business, Enterprise, or Edu workspace.
Write down the narrow task you intend to perform—such as finding a file, summarizing a channel, or creating a draft. A narrow purpose makes it easier to reject an unnecessarily broad request during authorization.

How to connect an app or plugin in ChatGPT
Interface names and locations vary by plan, region, model, workspace role, and surface. Follow the controls visible in your account; a missing option can indicate a staged rollout, plan eligibility, or an administrator policy rather than a setup error.
- Open Settings. Look for Plugins, Apps, or a connected-apps area. OpenAI’s Apps in ChatGPT guidance said on July 9, 2026 that the app directory had moved to the Plugin directory, but labels can change again by account.
- Find the intended app or plugin. Read its description, included apps, supported capabilities, setup requirements, terms of service, and privacy policy. A listing’s OpenAI Verified badge does not replace your organization’s vendor, privacy, or security review.
- Install it if ChatGPT asks. Installation makes the capability available in ChatGPT; it does not bypass provider authorization or workspace permission.
- Choose Connect or the equivalent action. Select the provider account that contains the information needed for your task.
- Inspect the provider authorization screen. Review requested services, scopes, and actions. Do not assume that a familiar app name means narrow access; read the actual permissions shown by the provider.
- Authorize only after checking the account and scope. Provider authorization remains subject to that account’s permissions and your workspace’s restrictions.
- Start a supported conversation. Use the app from the model or interface that supports it, and invoke it using the app picker, connector control, or the app’s documented natural-language trigger.
- Review every confirmation prompt. Before allowing a read, send, create, edit, delete, or other action, check the target, content, and destination.
Supported actions and confirmation behavior differ between apps and workspaces. Some actions may be read-only; others can modify external data. If the app does not appear in a conversation, check that you are using a supported model and surface and that the workspace administrator has enabled it.
Four controls that people often confuse
1. Account authorization
This is the provider’s grant to ChatGPT or the connector. It establishes which provider account is connected and which services or scopes that account offers. Revoking it at the provider or disconnecting the app removes the connection.
2. Provider and source permissions
These are the permissions already assigned to the connected account—for example, which Drive folders, Slack channels, repositories, or records it can see, and whether it can edit them. ChatGPT cannot use a file the account itself cannot access.
3. Workspace controls
A ChatGPT workspace administrator may enable or disable apps, restrict roles, or apply organization policies. Enterprise organizations can request supported account-domain restrictions. Those restrictions do not automatically disconnect connections that already exist.
4. ChatGPT app-permission prompts
These controls determine when ChatGPT asks before reading information or taking an action. They do not grant an app new access and do not revoke access already granted. If a prompt setting changes, the underlying connection and provider authorization remain in place until you disconnect the app or an administrator disables it.

Use this safety checklist before approving a connection
- Availability: Confirm that the app is offered for your plan, region, workspace, role, model, and current interface.
- Vendor identity: Determine whether it is first-party, verified, or custom. Treat a verification badge as useful context, not as a substitute for review.
- Capabilities: Note whether it can only retrieve information or can also create, edit, send, delete, or otherwise modify data.
- Account: Confirm the exact provider identity shown during sign-in.
- Scope: Read every requested service and permission; reject broad scopes that are unnecessary for your task.
- Terms and privacy: Read the app’s own terms and privacy policy. Information shared with an app is handled under those documents.
- Workspace approval: For work use, confirm that an administrator has enabled the app and assigned access to the right roles.
- Data settings: Check Memory, model-improvement, retention, and workspace policies before sharing sensitive material.
- Action review: Inspect the exact target and payload each time ChatGPT asks to perform a write or modify operation.
- Exit plan: Know where to disconnect the app and who can disable it if the connection is no longer needed.
What connected apps can see and receive
An enabled app may receive relevant context from the ChatGPT conversation so it can fulfill your request. If Memory is enabled, relevant memory context may also be used, subject to restrictions imposed by the app or source. The app may also receive basic information normally shared when visiting a website, such as your IP address, device or browser type, language and region settings, and approximate location.

That data is handled according to the app’s terms of service and privacy policy. Review those documents before enabling the integration, especially when the app is operated by a third party or can write to an external system.
Consumer plans and model improvement
For Free, Plus, Go, and Pro users, information accessed from apps may be used to train models when Improve the model for everyone is turned on. Check that setting before connecting a source containing confidential, regulated, or personal information. Turning off model improvement changes training use; it does not itself disconnect the app or erase data held under the app’s terms.
Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces
For Business, Enterprise, and Edu, information accessed from connectors is not used for training by default. Your organization’s own retention, compliance, identity, and administrator policies still apply, as do the connected provider’s terms and controls.
Google accounts and workspaces
Google app access remains subject to Google account permissions and workspace settings. A normal connection does not automatically create a personal synchronized index. If an administrator blocks an app, limits third-party access, or restricts a Drive location, ChatGPT cannot use that data through the connection.

Apps
Apps connect ChatGPT to external services such as cloud storage, messaging, project, or business systems. Depending on the app, ChatGPT may retrieve information, search records, or perform supported actions.

Plugins
Plugins package workflow capabilities. A plugin can include apps, skills, or app templates, and some contain only skills rather than a connection to an external service. Installing one does not remove the need for provider authorization or workspace approval.
Connectors
“Connector” commonly describes the integration path that lets ChatGPT use an external source. The important questions are still the same: which account is connected, what data can it reach, what actions can it take, and which administrator and plan policies apply.
Custom and third-party MCP apps
Custom Model Context Protocol (MCP) apps create an additional trust boundary. An unsafe or untrusted server can increase risks, including prompt injection. Organizations are responsible for checking custom apps and connectors before enabling them, including apps they build themselves and third-party apps they upload.

Review the operator, code or deployment controls available to you, requested scopes, logging and retention practices, and whether the server can write to business systems. ChatGPT may request confirmation for write or modify actions depending on permissions, context, and impact; some risky actions may be blocked. A confirmation prompt is a useful checkpoint, not proof that the server is trustworthy.
Read-only versus write access: make the distinction explicit

Prefer a read-only connection for discovery and summarization. Add write capability only when the task requires it, and keep a human review step for messages, permission changes, financial records, production systems, or irreversible deletion.
Workspace administrator guidance
Administrators should evaluate an app before enabling it for an organization. Review the vendor, data flows, requested scopes, action types, identity model, retention, incident process, and role assignments. Enable only the roles that need the capability, and document which systems the app may access.

Enterprise organizations can request supported account-domain restrictions. Such restrictions help control which accounts may connect, but they do not automatically disconnect existing connections. Administrators should therefore combine domain controls with an inventory of current connections and a process for disabling them when people change roles or leave.

Test it with non-sensitive data, constrain scopes, and define who reviews prompts and resulting changes.

- Open ChatGPT Settings and return to the Plugins, Apps, or connected-apps area.
- Select the connected app and choose Disconnect, Remove, or the equivalent control.
- If the provider offers a separate connected-app or OAuth management page, revoke ChatGPT’s authorization there as well.
- For a work account, ask the workspace administrator to disable the app or remove your role access if you cannot disconnect it yourself.
- After removal, start a new test conversation and confirm that the app no longer appears or can retrieve data.
Changing approval prompts alone does not remove access already granted. Disconnecting the app, revoking provider authorization, or having the administrator disable it is the step that ends the connection.
Troubleshooting common connection problems
The app is missing
Check plan, region, workspace, role, model, and interface eligibility. Ask an administrator whether the app is disabled or restricted. A rollout difference can look identical to a technical failure.
Authorization succeeds but the expected file or record is absent
Verify that you selected the account that owns the data and that the account can open the item directly. Check folder, channel, repository, sharing, and organization policies in the provider. A ChatGPT connection cannot expand those underlying permissions.
ChatGPT asks for confirmation more often than expected
Confirmation behavior varies by app, action, context, and workspace controls. Treat the prompt as a review point; inspect the target and content rather than trying to bypass it.
A connector works for one person but not another
Compare plan, workspace membership, role assignment, provider account, source permissions, and model or surface. Different accounts can legitimately expose different data.
You suspect an unsafe app or prompt injection
Stop the action, do not approve a write or external send, and disconnect the app if necessary. Notify the workspace administrator, preserve relevant logs or screenshots according to policy, and review the connector’s operator and permissions before considering re-enablement.
A practical decision framework
Use the following sequence for each new integration:

If any answer is unclear, postpone authorization and resolve that uncertainty first. The safest connection is one with a defined account, narrow scope, known vendor, minimal capability, and a clear removal path.
