Best Dragon’s Dogma 2 Vocation for Solo Play and a Small Pawn Party

Thief is the best practical default for an Arisen who wants to do most of the fighting while traveling with a small Pawn party. Its rapid dagger attacks, mobility, ability to exploit openings, and heavy damage suit an active player who would rather create opportunities than stand behind the party. That is a role-based recommendation, not a universal damage ranking: the official descriptions do not establish one objectively best vocation for every encounter, build, difficulty, or game update.

Choose Fighter instead when protecting the party matters more than speed, or Mage when your priority is healing and weapon enchantments. With up to three Pawns available, a compact group can cover support, frontline defense, and ranged or magick damage without requiring the Arisen to fill every role.

What “best” means for solo-oriented play

Dragon’s Dogma 2 does not require the Arisen to travel alone. PlayStation describes a party system in which Pawns have their own vocations, respond to commands, and can be joined by two additional hired Pawns—up to three Pawn companions in total. “Solo play” therefore usually means that the player controls one main character and expects that character to remain effective even when the party is small, rather than relying on a large roster or a tightly specialized team.

For that interpretation, Thief is the strongest starting recommendation. The vocation’s described identity is direct and active: rapid dagger attacks, high mobility, movement away after striking, opening exploitation, and heavy damage. Those traits let the Arisen contribute damage personally while Pawns handle complementary jobs such as healing, guarding, or attacking from a distance.

#1 Best Overall
Dragon's Dogma 2 - PS5
  • A Grand Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins in a subterranean jail, where the Dragon’s voice echoes in the fog of lost memories.
  • Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey.
  • Made with RE ENGINE – Capcom’s advanced RE ENGINE produces vividly detailed, high fidelity graphics combined with immersive physics and complex and reactive character AI to create a setting where decisions, and their consequences, come to life.
  • Pre-order Bonus: Superior Weapons Quartet

The recommendation has limits. The available official descriptions explain what each vocation is designed to do, but they do not provide a complete damage ranking, a tested solo tier list, or a guarantee that Thief performs best in every fight. Treat the choice as a match between mechanics and your preferred risk level. You can also change vocation at a Vocation Guild, so selecting Thief is a reversible starting experiment rather than a permanent commitment.

The decision axes that matter

Compare the vocations on three practical questions before you choose:

  • How do you avoid danger? Fighter relies on a shield and timed blocks; Thief relies more on movement and attacking from advantageous openings.
  • Where does the Arisen’s damage come from? Thief and Fighter work at close range, Archer attacks with a bow, and Sorcerer supplies powerful magick when there is time and space to cast.
  • How much of the party do you want to support? Mage contributes healing and weapon enchantments, while Fighter protects companions directly and the damage-focused vocations leave more support work to Pawns.

These are role distinctions, not promises of equal performance in every situation. A vocation can be “best” for your party because it covers the job you personally enjoy and leaves Pawns to cover the jobs you do not want to perform.

Vocation comparison at a glance

Vocation Officially described role Why it fits a small-Pawn party Choose it when…
Thief Rapid dagger strikes, high mobility, opening exploitation, movement after striking, and heavy damage. The Arisen remains an active damage source while Pawns supply support or protection. You want to move constantly and handle much of the fighting yourself.
Fighter Sword-and-shield close combat, guarding, timed blocks, and protection for companions. It gives a compact party a dependable defensive front line. You value personal defense and party protection over maximum mobility.
Mage Magick attacks, weapon enchantments, and healing; stronger spells take longer to cast. It lets the Arisen keep a small group supplied and enhanced. You prefer enabling Pawns and controlling the party’s support needs.
Archer Long-range bow attacks and targeting elevated enemies. It adds physical range when other party members fight up close. You want to contribute from distance or reach enemies above the melee.
Sorcerer Powerful magick attacks that require casting time and a safe position. It adds a dedicated ranged-magick damage option. You can create or recognize safe moments for longer casts.

Thief: the default recommendation

Why it works for a self-reliant Arisen

PlayStation describes Thief as fast and mobile. Rapid dagger attacks let the Arisen stay engaged, while movement away after striking helps the player avoid remaining in one place. The vocation is also described as able to exploit openings and deal heavy damage. Together, those traits fit a player who wants to make the decisive moves personally instead of waiting for Pawns to finish every dangerous target.

A small party benefits from that independence. If one Pawn is busy healing, another is holding a front line, or a third is repositioning for a ranged attack, the Thief still has a clear job: move to an opening, apply close-range damage, and reposition. This division keeps the party useful without requiring four highly specialized characters to function.

What Thief does not cover by itself

Thief is not described as a healer, enchanter, shield specialist, or ranged caster. If you select it, decide which of those jobs Pawns will provide. A Mage Pawn can supply healing and weapon enchantments; a Fighter Pawn can provide shield-based defense; an Archer or Sorcerer Pawn can add range. The exact combination is an editorial fit based on the official role descriptions, not an officially prescribed formation.

Who should not start with Thief

Choose another vocation first if your enjoyment depends on blocking attacks for companions, restoring the party, or casting from a protected distance. Thief rewards an active, mobile approach; it is a poor match if you would rather solve danger through defense or support than movement and close-range pressure.

Fighter: the defensive alternative

What the vocation contributes

Capcom describes Fighter as a sword-and-shield vocation built for close combat. Fighters guard, deflect attacks with timed blocks, and balance offense with defending their companions. In a compact party, that role is valuable because one character can stand between danger and less durable allies while still contributing at close range.

  • A Grand Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins in a subterranean jail, where the Dragon’s voice echoes in the fog of lost memories. With their heart taken by the Dragon, the Arisen is set on a path to slay that symbol of the world’s destruction as it soars through the sky on massive wings, breathing flames that scorch everything in its path. With the Arisen’s future veiled in mystery, what challenges and triumphs await on the path to their destiny?
  • Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey. Pawns create the feeling of a cooperative gameplay experience by offering unique characteristics, skills, and knowledge gained from their experiences with other Arisen.
  • Made with RE ENGINE – Capcom’s advanced RE ENGINE produces vividly detailed, high fidelity graphics combined with immersive physics and complex and reactive character AI to create a setting where decisions, and their consequences, come to life.

When Fighter is better than Thief

Fighter is the logical choice when your main concern is personal risk and party safety. A player who prefers to read attacks, raise a shield, and protect Pawns may find the defensive rhythm more reliable than constantly moving for openings. It is also useful when you want the Arisen to be the party’s obvious frontline presence rather than its mobile damage specialist.

The trade-off

Fighter emphasizes guarding and companion protection, so it does not offer the same described mobility focus as Thief. If you select Fighter, let Pawns add capabilities the shield user does not provide, such as healing, long-range attacks, or magick damage.

Mage: support from the player-controlled character

Healing and enchantments

PlayStation describes Mage as a vocation with magick attacks, weapon enchantments, and healing. Those functions can make a small party more forgiving because the Arisen directly supplies support instead of depending entirely on a Mage Pawn. Enchantments also let the player contribute to the party’s offensive plan while still filling a support role.

The cost of stronger spells

Advanced Mage spells take longer to cast. That casting time creates a practical requirement: the Arisen needs enough safety and space to complete the spell. If you prefer uninterrupted movement and immediate close-range actions, Thief or Fighter will feel more direct. If you enjoy preparing the party, healing at the right moment, and choosing when to commit to a longer cast, Mage may be the better solo-oriented choice.

When a Mage Arisen makes sense

Select Mage when your definition of solo effectiveness is “the party can keep going because I provide the essential support.” A Mage Arisen pairs naturally with Pawns that bring frontline defense and damage, because the player-controlled character remains responsible for recovery and enhancement while companions handle more of the contact work.

Archer: physical range and elevated targets

Archer uses a bow for long-range attacks and is described as able to target elevated enemies. That makes Archer a useful alternative when you want the Arisen to contribute without entering every close-quarters exchange. A compact party centered on melee Pawns can gain a different attack angle from a player-controlled Archer.

Archer is less directly aligned with the “I want to handle most of the fighting up close” reason for choosing Thief, but it can be the better personal fit if distance, visibility, and targeting matter more to you than mobility through melee openings. Pair it with a Mage for support and a Fighter for protection when you want Pawns to secure the space in which the Archer operates.

Sorcerer: high-impact magick with a positioning requirement

Sorcerer is described as delivering powerful magick attacks. The defining practical caveat is that those spells require time and a safe casting position. In a small party, the Sorcerer’s success therefore depends on whether another character can keep immediate pressure away long enough for the cast to finish.

  • The deep, explorable fantasy world of Dragon's Dogma... Dragon's Dogma is a narrative-driven, single-player action RPG that challenges players to shape their own experience—from the appearance of their Arisen, their vocation, and their party, to how they approach various situations and much more.

Choose Sorcerer when you want the Arisen to be the party’s ranged-magick damage source and are comfortable treating positioning as part of the job. A Fighter Pawn can provide the close-range defense, while a Mage Pawn can add healing or enchantments. If the battlefield rarely gives you room to cast safely, Archer offers a ranged option without the same stated casting-time concern.

How to build a compact Pawn party

You can hire two additional Pawns and travel with up to three Pawn companions. A balanced compact formation covers three functions rather than duplicating the Arisen’s vocation:

Party need Pawn vocation to consider Reason
Recovery and support Mage Healing and weapon enchantments keep the group supported while the Arisen focuses on a different job.
Close-range defense Fighter Guarding, timed blocks, and companion protection create a defensive front line.
Range or magick damage Archer or Sorcerer Archer contributes bow attacks and can target elevated enemies; Sorcerer contributes powerful magick when safe casting time is available.

For a Thief Arisen, this produces a straightforward division: the player supplies mobile close-range damage, the Mage supports, the Fighter protects, and the final Pawn attacks from range or with magick. That is a reasoned combination of the roles described by PlayStation and Capcom; neither source declares it the single best party.

If you want fewer than three Pawns

A smaller group increases the importance of the job you leave uncovered. With one Pawn, choose the role you are least willing or able to perform yourself. A Thief who does not want to manage healing should prioritize a Mage. A Mage who needs protection should prioritize a Fighter. An Archer or Sorcerer benefits from a Pawn that can keep close-range threats occupied. The fewer companions you bring, the more deliberately you should choose complementary functions instead of overlapping damage roles.

When two Pawns are enough

Two Pawns can cover the most urgent gaps while leaving the Arisen as the party’s main damage source. For a Thief, Mage plus Fighter is the clearest defensive-and-support pairing. If you are comfortable handling recovery and protection yourself, replace one of those with Archer or Sorcerer to emphasize damage variety.

Pawn commands that change how the party behaves

Vocation alone does not determine a Pawn’s contribution. Capcom’s manual describes three commands with distinct priorities:

  • Help: prioritizes support, healing, and recovery. Use it when keeping the party sustained matters more than having Pawns act independently.
  • To me: directs Pawns to fight by the Arisen’s side. Use it when you want a compact formation and do not want companions spreading away from you.
  • Go: tells Pawns to act independently and spread out in combat. Use it when independent action or wider battlefield coverage is useful.

Pawn inclinations also affect behavior. Two Pawns with the same vocation may not contribute in exactly the same way if their inclinations push them toward different tendencies. When a Pawn appears to ignore the role you expected, review both the command you issued and the Pawn’s inclination rather than changing vocation immediately.

Commands for a Thief-led party

Begin with To me when you want the Mage and Fighter close enough to support your movement. Use Help when recovery is the immediate priority. Choose Go when spreading Pawns out creates useful independent action, such as allowing a ranged Pawn to work from a different angle while the Thief engages at close range. These are situational controls, not permanent settings.

Commands for a defensive Fighter-led party

Fighter benefits from a compact formation when the Arisen’s goal is to protect companions, so To me is the natural starting command. Switch to Help when the party needs support and recovery, and reserve Go for moments when independent Pawn action is more valuable than staying behind the shield.

How to test the choice without locking yourself in

  1. Start with your preferred responsibility. Pick Thief for mobile direct damage, Fighter for shield defense, Mage for healing and enchantments, Archer for bow-based range, or Sorcerer for powerful magick that requires casting time and a safe position.
  2. Visit a Vocation Guild. Capcom says vocations can be changed there. Use that reversibility to test a role rather than treating the first selection as permanent.
  3. Hire complementary Pawns. Fill the functions your Arisen does not provide. For a Thief, Mage plus Fighter is a practical core; use the third slot for Archer or Sorcerer if you want range or magick damage.
  4. Set an intentional command. Start with Help for support and recovery, To me for a close formation, or Go for independent action and spread.
  5. Observe the party’s actual needs. If you are repeatedly waiting for recovery, add or prioritize Mage support. If companions need protection, add Fighter capability. If close-range engagements leave targets out of reach, add Archer or Sorcerer range.
  6. Change one variable at a time. Switch the Arisen’s vocation or one Pawn role, then reassess. Changing every role simultaneously makes it difficult to tell which adjustment solved the problem.

This process tests your preferred division of labor using the game’s reversible vocation system. It does not create a universal ranking, because the official descriptions do not establish one.

Role choices for common play priorities

“I want to do most of the fighting myself.”

Choose Thief. Its described mobility, opening exploitation, and heavy damage align most directly with an active Arisen who wants to remain the party’s main combat contributor. Add support and protection through Pawns.

“I want the safest-feeling frontline.”

Choose Fighter. Guarding, timed blocks, and defending companions are its defining functions. Let Pawns provide healing and a different damage angle.

“I want to keep everyone effective.”

Choose Mage. Healing and weapon enchantments make the Arisen the party’s support anchor, while longer casting times mean you must value safe opportunities to cast.

“I prefer attacking from distance.”

Choose Archer for bow-based long-range attacks and the ability to target elevated enemies. Choose Sorcerer if powerful magick is more appealing and you can secure the time and position required for casting.

“I do not know what I like yet.”

Start with Thief, hire a Mage and Fighter, and use the Vocation Guild to change later. That setup exposes you to mobile damage, support, and defense without making the first decision irreversible.

Common mistakes with a small party

  • Calling Thief objectively best. The sources support a role fit, not a universal ranking. Your preferred risk level and the encounter can change the better choice.
  • Duplicating every role. A small party gains more from covering support, defense, and range or magick than from assigning every slot the same kind of close-range damage.
  • Ignoring casting time. Mage’s stronger spells and Sorcerer’s powerful magick require time; select those roles only if the party can provide or find a safe position.
  • Forgetting commands. Help, To me, and Go produce different Pawn priorities. A Pawn behaving unexpectedly may be following the current command or its inclination.
  • Treating the first vocation as permanent. Capcom states that you can change vocation at a Vocation Guild. Use that option to refine the party around your actual preferences.
  • Assuming a formation is official. Mage, Fighter, and Archer or Sorcerer make a sensible complementary trio, but the official materials do not label it the best party.

A concise decision checklist

  • Pick Thief if mobility, close-range openings, and personal damage are your priorities.
  • Pick Fighter if shielding yourself and protecting Pawns matter most.
  • Pick Mage if you want to own healing and weapon enchantments.
  • Pick Archer if you want bow-based range and access to elevated targets.
  • Pick Sorcerer if you want powerful magick and can secure casting time.
  • Use a Mage Pawn for support, a Fighter Pawn for defense, and an Archer or Sorcerer Pawn for range or magick when building around a Thief.
  • Adjust Help, To me, and Go commands to match the immediate battle plan.
  • Change vocation at a Vocation Guild if the role does not suit how you actually play.
