How to Connect AWS Elemental MediaPackage to a YouTube Live Ingest Endpoint

MediaPackage packages and serves playback; an encoder such as MediaLive pushes HLS to YouTube. Here’s how to set up the AWS publishing path and use MediaPackage separately.

You generally don’t connect MediaPackage directly to a YouTube Live ingest endpoint. MediaPackage is an origin and packaging service: it receives an upstream feed and serves packaged playback to requesting devices. For an AWS-to-YouTube publishing path, configure an encoder such as AWS Elemental MediaLive to push HLS output to the endpoint YouTube generates. Use MediaPackage separately if you also need AWS-originated playback for viewers.

Why MediaPackage is not the YouTube ingest destination

The services have different roles and traffic flows. In the documented MediaPackage v2 live flow, an upstream encoder sends HLS input to MediaPackage; MediaPackage processes it into configured outputs that downstream devices request over HTTPS. Supported inputs include HLS and CMAF, and output options include HLS and DASH. See AWS’s MediaPackage live processing flow and supported inputs and outputs.

YouTube HLS ingest works in the opposite direction: an encoder pushes media playlists and segments to YouTube using HTTPS PUT or POST. The official sources reviewed document an AWS MediaLive-to-YouTube route, but not a direct MediaPackage-origin-to-YouTube connection. Unless another verified encoder or relay performs the push, don’t enter a YouTube ingest URL as though it were a MediaPackage output destination.

Choose the architecture for your goal

Goal Use Traffic flow
Publish a live feed on YouTube An HLS-capable encoder, such as MediaLive Encoder pushes HLS playlists and segments to the YouTube ingest endpoint.
Serve playback from AWS MediaPackage, with an upstream encoder and any required delivery layer Encoder sends input to MediaPackage; viewers request packaged output from its endpoint.
Publish on YouTube and serve AWS playback Configure the publishing and playback paths as separate outputs in the production architecture Send an encoder output to YouTube; configure MediaPackage separately for AWS-originated playback.

AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS architecture distinguishes MediaLive for transcoding, MediaPackage for packaging, and CloudFront for delivery from MediaPackage endpoints. The exact components you need depend on whether viewers should watch on YouTube, through your AWS delivery setup, or both.

Set up MediaLive HLS output for YouTube

The following is the AWS-native publishing approach described in AWS’s MediaLive example. Its console walkthrough was published on 14 April 2021 as a 4K HDR example, so treat its settings as an illustration, not a current universal preset; check current AWS console labels and YouTube’s stream-specific settings before going live.

  1. Create or select a YouTube live stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, choose or create a stream and select HLS as its protocol. Copy the generated HTTPS ingest URL and, if YouTube provides one, the optional backup URL. YouTube creates the endpoint for the selected stream; don’t reuse an example URL or disclose your private stream key. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance and the LiveStreams API reference.
  2. Configure an HLS output group in MediaLive. Set the destination to the YouTube HLS ingest URL and include the stream-specific key or destination details as required by the current YouTube and MediaLive interfaces. AWS’s example uses HLS Basic PUT. Confirm the destination syntax and authentication details against the current interfaces rather than copying a sample endpoint.
  3. Set the output to meet YouTube’s HLS requirements. Choose compatible codecs and packaging, then validate the segment and playlist behavior described below. AWS’s example uses a two-second segment length; that is an example within YouTube’s allowed range, not a requirement to use exactly two seconds.
  4. Start the encoder and verify reception. Start the MediaLive channel, then check YouTube Live Control Room for incoming video, audio, and stream health before making the event public or relying on it as a live program.

Match YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements

YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide and HLS setup help specify the relevant format constraints. Validate the actual encoder output; choosing HLS in a console alone does not ensure the resulting stream is compatible.

  • 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
  • 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
  • Transport and requests: deliver over HTTPS using HTTP PUT or POST.
  • Segments and container: use TS segments; audio and video must be muxed in M2TS. Byte-range delivery is not supported.
  • Video: use H.264 or HEVC. YouTube’s HLS guide supports up to 60 fps. HDR has additional HEVC and color requirements, so don’t assume an ordinary codec preset is sufficient for HDR.
  • Audio: use AAC with a single audio track.
  • GOP: use a closed GOP.
  • Segment length: each segment must be between one and four seconds. AWS’s two-second example falls within this interval.
  • Playlist: use a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.

YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP, and ultra-low-latency mode is off when HLS is selected. If minimizing delay is critical, compare the available ingest protocols in the current Live Control Room settings before building the workflow around HLS.

Where MediaPackage fits if you also need AWS playback

Configure MediaPackage as a separate playback-origin path, not as the YouTube push endpoint. MediaPackage v2 accepts HLS or CMAF input over HTTPS; sources outside the AWS account require an appropriate channel policy, and incoming media segments must not be encrypted. Its configured output endpoints can serve supported HLS or DASH formats. Review the current MediaPackage input and output requirements and live processing flow when designing that path.

The reviewed AWS reference architecture uses MediaLive to transcode, MediaPackage to package, and CloudFront to deliver playback from MediaPackage endpoints. That architecture serves viewer playback; it does not establish that YouTube pulls directly from a MediaPackage endpoint. If you need both YouTube and AWS playback, document and test each destination path independently.

Common problems and fixes

  • YouTube shows no incoming video: check that MediaLive is sending to the exact HTTPS endpoint generated for this stream, that the stream key or destination details match, and that the channel is running. A sample or stale endpoint is not a substitute for the current stream’s URL.
  • The endpoint receives data but rejects the format: inspect the encoder output for muxed M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, single-track AAC audio, closed GOP, TS segments, and the permitted segment duration. Also confirm there is no byte-range delivery.
  • Playback stalls or segments are missing: check the rolling playlist and ensure it has no more than five outstanding segments; confirm delivery uses HTTPS PUT or POST and that the encoder is producing segments continuously.
  • Latency is greater than expected: HLS has higher latency than RTMP in YouTube’s guidance, and ultra-low-latency mode is disabled when HLS is selected. Reassess the ingest protocol if the event requires lower delay.
  • You expected MediaPackage to publish the stream: recheck the flow direction. Point the encoder’s YouTube output at YouTube’s generated ingest endpoint; use MediaPackage for its separately configured origin and playback outputs.
  • MediaPackage rejects its own input: verify the input is a supported HLS or CMAF source over HTTPS, the channel policy permits an external source when applicable, and incoming segments are unencrypted.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping on a YouTube channel rather than publish a live encoder feed through AWS, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for that use case. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
