Connect the Orbi router’s yellow Internet port to your modem or ISP gateway with the supplied Ethernet cable, then finish setup in the Orbi app or a web browser. The steps below cover NETGEAR’s general Orbi setup flow; exact login addresses and hardware details can vary by model, so use your model’s support instructions if something differs.
Before you connect the Orbi router
Gather the Orbi router and power adapter, your modem or ISP gateway, the supplied Ethernet cable, and either a phone with the Orbi app or a browser-capable computer. Find the default WiFi name and password on the router’s label. Keep the satellites unplugged until the router setup flow asks you to add them.

If you have a gateway that combines a modem and router, connect its Ethernet port to the Orbi router’s yellow Internet port. Whether the gateway needs bridge mode or another network setting depends on your ISP and equipment; check the ISP’s or model’s instructions rather than assuming one configuration applies to every gateway.

Choose an app or browser setup

NETGEAR documents both routes. They are different ways to configure the system, not a claim that one will provide better WiFi performance.

Set up Orbi with the app
- Open the Orbi app, sign in to your MyNETGEAR account, choose Set up an Orbi, and scan the QR code on the router sleeve or base when prompted.
- Unplug the modem and any existing router. Connect the modem to the Orbi router’s yellow Internet port with the supplied Ethernet cable.
- Power on the modem and Orbi router, but leave satellites unplugged. Wait for the modem’s lights to stabilize and the Orbi router LED to turn solid white. NETGEAR says this startup can take up to five minutes.
- Follow the app prompts to join the Orbi’s default WiFi using the credentials printed on its label. Set a WiFi name and password, create an administrator password, and answer security questions if prompted. Use distinct WiFi and administrator passwords, and store them securely.
- When the app reaches satellite setup, plug in each satellite and let the app discover it. NETGEAR’s general placement guidance is three to four rooms from the router or another satellite.
Set up Orbi in a web browser
- Unplug the modem and any existing router. Connect the modem to the Orbi router’s yellow Internet port using the supplied Ethernet cable.
- Power on the modem and Orbi router, keeping satellites unplugged. Wait for the modem lights to stabilize and the router to finish starting.
- Connect a computer to the Orbi’s default WiFi with the name and password printed on the router label, or use a LAN port.
- Open the login address NETGEAR specifies for your Orbi generation. Its general Orbi guide lists
orbilogin.localfor newer routers andorbilogin.comfor older routers. If the relevant host name does not work, the guide lists10.168.168.1and192.168.1.1, respectively, as alternatives. Address support can vary by model; check its instructions if none loads. - Follow the setup page to accept the terms, configure administrator and WiFi credentials, check for firmware updates, and detect satellites when prompted. Keep the administrator password different from the WiFi password.
If Orbi setup fails
The app cannot complete installation
NETGEAR’s troubleshooting sequence is to disconnect the Orbi router from the modem, reboot the modem, reconnect it to the router’s Internet port, and retry setup in the app. If the app still cannot finish, use the browser setup route above.
The browser login page will not load
- Confirm the computer is connected to Orbi WiFi or to a LAN port on the router.
- Check that the router is powered on, then reopen the browser or clear its browser data and try again.
- Verify that you are using the login address appropriate for your model generation; consult the model’s instructions if NETGEAR’s general addresses do not work.
Orbi is set up but has no internet connection
Check the setup entries and confirm the Ethernet cable runs from the modem or gateway to the Orbi router’s yellow Internet port. If service still does not connect, ask your ISP which configuration information its service requires. The correct settings cannot be determined from the Orbi name alone.

Add an Orbi satellite after initial setup
Before adding hardware, confirm that the satellite is compatible with your specific Orbi router model. To add a compatible satellite later, connect your phone to Orbi WiFi, open the Orbi app, and sign in with the account used for the original setup. Open Menu, tap ADD SATELLITE, and follow the prompts.
