How to Connect and Set Up a Controller for PC Gaming

Connect a controller to Windows with a compatible USB data cable or Bluetooth, then verify that your game supports it. Includes DualSense pairing and troubleshooting steps.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connect a controller to a Windows PC with a compatible USB data cable, or pair it over Bluetooth if both the controller and PC support Bluetooth. Windows will often detect and install a USB-connected device automatically. After connection, check whether the game supports that controller: Windows recognizing it does not mean every game will.

The setup has three separate checkpoints: connect or pair the controller, confirm Windows detects it, and confirm the game accepts controller input. If something goes wrong, identifying which checkpoint failed helps you choose the right next step instead of changing settings that are unrelated to the problem.

Choose USB or Bluetooth

USB is the straightforward choice if you want a wired connection and have a compatible data cable. Bluetooth avoids a cable during play, but requires Bluetooth hardware in the PC and a controller that supports Bluetooth. Which route works best depends on your controller, computer and game; neither connection method guarantees that every title will accept controller input.

Connection What you need What to expect
USB A compatible cable that fits the controller and supports data, plus an available USB port. Connect the controller to the PC. Windows usually detects and installs connected hardware automatically, according to Microsoft Support.
Bluetooth A Bluetooth-capable controller and PC, Bluetooth enabled on the PC, and the controller in pairing mode. Select the controller from Windows’ Bluetooth device list. The pairing-button sequence depends on the controller model.

Use USB if you want to avoid Bluetooth pairing or your PC does not have Bluetooth and you do not want to add an adapter. Use Bluetooth if both devices support it and you prefer to play without a cable. The available guidance does not establish that one method is faster, more reliable in every setup, or better for every game, so choose based on your devices and preferences rather than assuming a universal advantage.

For a DualSense controller, Sony lists USB and Bluetooth connections on Windows 10 (64-bit) and Windows 11. Sony also notes that available features depend on the device and game. If you plan to connect it by USB, confirm the cable matches the controller’s connector and carries data; the cited support information does not validate a particular cable.

Connect a controller with USB

  1. Check the connection. Identify the port on the controller and choose a compatible USB cable that can transfer data. A cable that only supplies power may not establish a usable wired connection. Do not assume that a cable is suitable just because its plug fits.
  2. Connect the controller to the PC. Plug the cable into the controller and a USB port on the computer. Turn on the controller if it does not power on automatically.
  3. Give Windows a moment to detect it. Microsoft Support says, “Windows usually detects and installs new hardware automatically when you connect it.” Wait for that automatic setup to complete before opening the game. “Usually” is not a guarantee, so continue with the manual option if Windows does not add the device.
  4. If Windows does not add it automatically, try the manual device path. On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices > Add device, then follow the prompts. Microsoft describes this as a useful route when a device is not detected or when adding a wireless device.
  5. Check the game separately. Once Windows has detected the controller, look at the game’s controller-support information and input settings. A device connection and a game’s support for that device are separate things.

If the controller is still missing after connecting it, check the basics in order: the cable fits both ends, it supports data rather than only power, it is fully connected, and Windows has had time to detect the hardware. The available setup guidance does not identify a particular retail cable or guarantee that a specific model will work, so confirm the connector and data capability for your controller before choosing one.

Pair a controller over Bluetooth

Before pairing

  • Confirm the PC has Bluetooth. Bluetooth must be available on the computer as well as supported by the controller. A USB Bluetooth adapter can add Bluetooth to a PC that lacks it. If the PC already has Bluetooth, an adapter is unnecessary.
  • Switch Bluetooth on. Use Settings > Bluetooth & devices or Quick Settings in Windows.
  • Prepare the controller. Make sure it is powered on and follow its manufacturer’s instructions to enter pairing mode. The button combination varies by model, so do not assume a sequence for one controller applies to another.
  • Keep the controller discoverable and in range. Pairing requires the PC to find the controller in its Bluetooth device list. If it is not discoverable, Windows cannot select it during setup.

Pair it in Windows

  1. Put the controller into its model-specific pairing mode. Keep it discoverable while you continue.
  2. Open the PC’s Bluetooth device list and look for the controller.
  3. Select the controller and follow any on-screen prompts to complete pairing.
  4. After pairing, try the game you intend to play and check its own controller-support information if input is not recognized.

Microsoft says a Bluetooth device can reconnect automatically when Bluetooth is on and the device is in range. That automatic reconnection is different from initial pairing: for first-time setup, the controller needs to be put into pairing mode and selected from the device list. If it does not appear, work through the troubleshooting checks below rather than assuming that Windows or the game supports every controller model.

Pair a Sony DualSense controller

  1. Make sure the player indicator is off and disconnect any USB cable from the controller.
  2. Hold the Create button, then hold the PS button until the light bar blinks.
  3. Turn on Bluetooth on the PC and select the controller from Windows’ Bluetooth device list.

Sony lists DualSense USB and Bluetooth connections for Windows 10 (64-bit) and Windows 11. That does not mean every DualSense feature is available in every game or setup: Sony says feature support depends on the device and game, and haptic feedback on PC may require a USB connection. If you are pairing over Bluetooth but a particular feature is unavailable, check the game and feature requirements before concluding that the controller itself failed to connect.

Check whether the game supports controllers

Controller support is determined game by game. A controller can be connected to Windows yet fail to work in a particular title, or a game can accept controller input while still requiring a mouse or keyboard for some tasks. Check the game’s store-page controller information before treating a lack of input as a connection failure.

Steam support label What it means What to plan for
Full Controller Support Steam says the game can be downloaded, launched and played using only a controller. You should not need a mouse or keyboard for those listed activities, though support still applies to that game rather than every game.
Partial Controller Support Steam says a mouse or keyboard may still be needed for some setup or interface tasks. Keep a mouse or keyboard available for configuration or menus that do not accept controller input.

These labels help set expectations, but they do not replace checking the title you plan to play. Full Controller Support describes the ability to download, launch and play that game using only a controller; Partial Controller Support means some setup or interface tasks may still require a mouse or keyboard. Neither label should be read as a statement that the same controller will work in every game.

Steam’s Big Picture support information lists official Microsoft Xbox controllers, official Sony DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers, and official Nintendo Switch Pro controllers. Steam says third-party controllers often work but are not officially supported. Sony also advises checking the Steam store page’s Controller Support field and notes that support varies by game. A listed controller family or a successful Windows connection is not a guarantee for every title.

If you are choosing a controller for a particular game, check that game’s support information before buying or changing your setup. Compare the controller’s supported Windows versions and available connection methods with your PC, then confirm the title supports controller input. The supported controller families on Steam are useful context, not a promise that every model or third-party device will behave identically in every game.

Troubleshoot a controller Windows cannot find

  1. Check Bluetooth capability and power. If you are pairing wirelessly, confirm the PC has Bluetooth and that it is switched on. Add a USB Bluetooth adapter only if the PC lacks Bluetooth. Check that the controller is powered on and charged or has fresh batteries.
  2. Confirm pairing mode and range. Follow the controller maker’s pairing instructions, make sure the controller is discoverable, and keep it within range of the PC while pairing. A controller that is on but not in pairing mode may not show up as a new device.
  3. Check Windows’ discovery setting. If the controller does not appear in the device list, Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the Bluetooth discovery setting.
  4. Look for possible USB 3.0 interference. Microsoft notes that unshielded USB devices plugged into USB 3.0 ports can sometimes interfere with Bluetooth. If a connection is sluggish or unresponsive, check whether such a device is connected and whether the problem changes when it is removed or moved.
  5. For a wired connection, verify the cable and detection route. Confirm that the cable fits and carries data, reconnect the controller, and allow Windows to detect it. On Windows 11, use Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices > Add device if the automatic setup did not add it.

These checks address different failure points. A missing controller in the Bluetooth list points first to Bluetooth being off, missing hardware, an unpowered or undiscoverable controller, range, or discovery settings. Sluggish or unresponsive Bluetooth may call for checking the USB 3.0 interference Microsoft describes. A controller that Windows has already detected is a different case: move on to the game’s support information and input settings rather than repeating the pairing steps.

Troubleshoot a controller the game does not recognize

If Windows detects the controller but the game does not, first check the game’s store-page support label and its own controller or input settings. Steam warns that not all games support controllers; Sony likewise says support varies by game. A game with Partial Controller Support may need a mouse or keyboard for setup or interface tasks even when it accepts controller input during play. If support is unclear or limited, troubleshoot the game’s stated input requirements before changing the PC’s Bluetooth setup.

Use this distinction to narrow the next step:

  • Windows does not list the controller: revisit the USB cable and automatic/manual detection steps, or the Bluetooth hardware, power, pairing and discovery checks.
  • Windows lists the controller but one game does not respond: check that specific game’s support label and input settings. A Windows connection alone does not prove the game supports that controller.
  • The game works but a menu or setup task does not: check whether Steam marks it as Partial Controller Support and keep a mouse or keyboard available for the tasks that require one.
  • A DualSense feature is missing: check whether the feature depends on the game or device and whether the PC feature requires USB; Sony notes that haptic feedback may require USB.

What to check before choosing a setup

  • Connection: Choose USB if you have a compatible data cable and prefer a wired connection; choose Bluetooth if the controller and PC support it and you prefer wireless pairing. The documentation here does not provide a numerical performance comparison between the two.
  • PC capability: Check for built-in Bluetooth before buying or using an adapter. An adapter is relevant only when the PC lacks Bluetooth.
  • Controller requirements: Confirm the controller’s supported Windows versions and connection options. For DualSense, Sony lists Windows 10 (64-bit) and Windows 11 for USB and Bluetooth use.
  • Game compatibility: Check the specific game’s support information, including whether it is marked Full or Partial Controller Support on Steam.
  • Features: Do not assume that all controller features work on PC or in every game. Sony says DualSense feature support depends on the device and game; haptic feedback on PC may require USB.
  • Accessories: For USB, confirm connector fit and data capability. For Bluetooth, add an adapter only if the PC does not already have Bluetooth. No particular cable model, adapter model or price is established here.

Microsoft’s device-setup guidance describes automatic installation as usual, not guaranteed. If a controller fails at one stage, identify which one: physical connection or Bluetooth pairing, Windows detection, or the game’s own support. That distinction points to the relevant next check without conflating a Windows connection problem with a game-compatibility limitation.

The Bottom Line

Connect by USB with a compatible data cable or pair over Bluetooth when both devices support it. Then confirm Windows detects the controller and check the game’s own support information—those are separate steps. If Windows sees the controller but a game does not, start with that title’s controller label and input settings; if Bluetooth pairing fails, check hardware, power, pairing mode, range and discovery.
