Yes—you can use an Xbox controller with an iPhone if it is a supported Bluetooth model. Apple lists the Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth (Model 1708), Xbox Series S and Series X controllers, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, and Xbox Adaptive Controller. Check your controller’s model before assuming an older one will pair.

That list does not mean every older Xbox controller has Bluetooth. Identify your controller’s model and compare it with Apple’s Xbox controller compatibility and connection guidance before troubleshooting a model that may not support Bluetooth.

How to pair an Xbox controller with an iPhone
- Press the Xbox button to turn on the controller.
- Hold the controller’s Connect button for a few seconds to put it into pairing mode.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Bluetooth and select the controller in the nearby-device list.
Once paired, open a game that supports controller input. A successful Bluetooth connection does not guarantee that every game accepts a controller.

What works after it connects?
Controller support depends on the game, and support for particular buttons or features can vary by controller and app. Apple specifically notes that features such as an audio jack or lights may not work in every combination. Check the game’s own controller support if input or a particular feature is unavailable.
Can you connect it with a cable instead?
Apple says some controllers may connect directly using a cable that supports both data and charging. This is conditional: Apple’s guidance does not establish a wired setup that works with every Xbox controller and iPhone combination. The controller, iPhone, and cable all need to support the connection.

What to try if pairing fails
- Install current software updates for the iPhone and controller.
- In the iPhone’s Bluetooth settings, forget the controller, then put it back in pairing mode and pair it again.
- Reduce the number of other connected Bluetooth devices to help limit interference.
- If the iPhone prompts you to update controller firmware, follow Microsoft’s Xbox wireless controller update instructions linked from Apple’s Xbox controller support page.
Can you customize the controller buttons?
Apple requires iOS 16 or later for controller button-customization settings; this is not a blanket minimum for connecting every controller. When customization is available, look under Settings > General > Game Controller. Apple’s wireless game controller guidance also explains the iOS requirement, wired-connection caveat, feature limitations, and general troubleshooting.
