To connect a legacy device with yellow, red, and white RCA plugs, run its video and audio outputs to the TV’s corresponding inputs, then select that AV or Video input on the TV. Yellow carries composite video; white carries left audio; red carries right audio. Check the labels on the sockets rather than relying on their position, since TV layouts vary.
Identify the TV and source-device connections
Look for the source device’s VIDEO OUT and AUDIO OUT sockets, and the TV’s VIDEO IN and AUDIO IN sockets. A standard composite cable has three plugs: yellow for video, white for left audio, and red for right audio. Philips’ connection guidance likewise distinguishes the device’s outputs from the TV’s inputs: Philips: connecting an external device with composite cables and Philips: connecting a DVD/VCR to a television.

Connect the cable and select the input
- Connect video: plug yellow into the source’s VIDEO OUT and the TV’s VIDEO IN.
- Connect audio: plug white into the left audio output and input, and red into the right audio output and input. Follow the labels, such as AUDIO L and AUDIO R, if the sockets are arranged differently from the cable plugs.
- Turn on both devices, then use the TV’s input/source control to select the AV, Video, or similarly named input that corresponds to the sockets you used. Nintendo’s Wii instructions also note that input locations vary and that the TV input must be selected after connecting: Nintendo Support: connecting a Wii using AV cables.
If you need a cable, choose a yellow/red/white RCA composite AV cable only when both devices have compatible composite sockets.
If the TV does not have a yellow video socket
Green VIDEO/Y socket
Some TVs support composite video through a green socket labeled VIDEO/Y or with an AV designation. On a layout documented by Sony, the yellow video plug goes into that green socket, while red and white go to AUDIO R/L. A green component-video socket does not automatically accept composite, so verify the label and the manual for your exact TV: Sony Support: Gaming Console – Composite.

Four-pole mini-plug AV input
Some TVs use a four-pole mini-plug input for AV and require a TV-specific RCA conversion cable. The adapter’s compatibility and wiring depend on the TV model; check its documentation before buying a 4-pole AV adapter.
No documented composite input
If the TV manual does not list composite input, the guidance cited here does not establish a universal converter that will work. Check the documentation for both the TV and source device before choosing any conversion hardware.

Troubleshoot a blank picture or missing sound
- Check direction: the source’s OUT sockets must connect to the TV’s IN sockets—not OUT to OUT.
- Check the function of each plug: yellow is video, white is left audio, and red is right audio. Use the socket labels if position is unclear.
- Check the selected TV input: choose the AV or Video source associated with the connected sockets.
- Check less-common inputs by model: confirm whether the TV documents composite through a green VIDEO/Y socket or a four-pole mini-plug before trying an alternate connection or buying an adapter.
