Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →In HostingSift’s September 21, 2026 snapshot, Intel-labelled dedicated-server plans had a lower median monthly price per physical core than AMD-labelled plans: $9.68 versus $13.06. That is a result from a specific set of listings, not proof that Intel is always cheaper or that AMD is better value: the Intel processors in the sample were older on median, and the comparison changes by launch era. To choose well, compare the exact server, workload, and billing terms—not the CPU brand or core price alone.
What the 2026 plan comparison actually measures
HostingSift took its snapshot on September 21, 2026, at 01:33 UTC. Its database contained 215 active dedicated-server plans with a listed price across 21 providers; 167 were orderable at the time. Of those, 109 orderable plans across 12 hosts named an identifiable processor and core count. Three GPU-equipped systems—Hetzner GEX45, Hetzner GEX131, and OVHcloud RISE-GPU-1—were left out of the AMD-versus-Intel medians because the GPU, rather than the CPU, drove their price. That leaves 106 plans in the brand comparison.

Another 58 orderable plans listed a core count but not a processor model. They can appear in broad price-per-core rankings, but cannot be assigned reliably to a CPU brand or launch era. The results below therefore describe the 106 CPU-identified, non-GPU plans, not every orderable dedicated server.

The comparison counts physical cores, not threads. HostingSift used a plan’s stated core count when available, or processor specifications when a provider listed only a CPU model. It converted euro prices to dollars at a flat rate of €1 = $1.15 for dollar comparisons; euro invoice prices remained in euros. This is a one-date listing snapshot and an exchange-rate assumption, not a live quote or a forecast of what a customer will pay.

How the AMD and Intel medians compare
Across the 106 included plans, HostingSift reported a median of $9.68 per Intel physical core per month and $13.06 per AMD physical core per month. Those are medians for the listed plans, not averages, and they do not adjust for server age, performance, configuration, or contract terms.
The processor mix is a major reason not to read the overall gap as an intrinsic brand advantage: the median Intel chip in the on-sale sample launched in 2019, compared with 2022 for AMD. A lower price per core can reflect older hardware or different plans as well as CPU-vendor pricing.
How prices change by processor launch era
Breaking the listings out by launch era changes the comparison. HostingSift’s sample showed higher median monthly per-core prices in more recent processor groups, but this is a hosting-price relationship—not a measure of equivalent performance per core.

| Processor launch era | Plans | Median monthly price per physical core |
|---|---|---|
| 2011–2016 | 7 | $9.99 |
| 2017–2019 | 33 | $9.10 |
| 2020–2022 | 29 | $12.79 |
| 2023–2025 | 37 | $14.23 |
In this sample, the 2023–2025 group’s median was 56% higher per core than the 2017–2019 group’s. A more recent launch date does not by itself establish better value: performance depends on the specific CPU and task, and server plans differ in more than processor generation.
The brand result also changes within eras
For 2017–2019 plans, the reported medians were close: $9.01 per Intel core and $9.55 per AMD core. For 2023–2025 plans, the seven Intel listings had a $16.87 median, while the 30 AMD listings had a $13.72 median. These are uneven and relatively small groups, especially Intel’s seven-plan group; plan mix can affect each median.
Why a lower price per core may not mean a cheaper server
A core-normalized figure is a quick filter, not a complete quote comparison. It ignores whether the server has enough memory, suitable storage, adequate network capacity, the right location, or service and support features your workload needs. It can also mislead when the customer is paying chiefly for another component: HostingSift notes that core-normalized pricing can be a poor fit for storage servers, and that hourly/API bare metal and managed hosting include service elements beyond the CPU.

Same-provider examples show why configuration matters
HostingSift’s examples do not point to one consistent brand premium. At Hetzner, the listed 48-core Intel plan cost more than its AMD counterpart. At Namecheap, the listed 32-core AMD plan cost modestly more than the Intel one. Two OVHcloud plan pairs had equal listed prices. These are examples, not controlled tests: not every component and term is held constant. In particular, Vultr’s cited eight-core AMD and Intel plans differ in RAM.

A separate Hetzner example isolates a different cost factor. Its AX162 and DX182 listings had the same stated CPU, core count, and RAM, but the AX162 in Hetzner’s own chassis was listed at €614 and the Dell-chassis DX182 at €724. This provider-specific example suggests chassis and system branding can affect a listing price independently of CPU vendor; it does not establish a general chassis premium across providers.
Setup fees and commitment can change the bill
Some listed Hetzner plans carried one-time setup fees. A fee of roughly half a month of service adds about 17% to the service cost over a three-month project, before considering any other charges. A low recurring monthly price can therefore lose to a higher one when the project is short.

The sample also mixes monthly, hourly, managed, and committed-term offers. A price tied to a term or billing commitment is not directly comparable to a month-to-month rate. Compare what is payable over your expected use period, including setup charges, renewal price, and the commitment needed to obtain the listed rate.
How to choose a dedicated-server CPU for your workload
Start with the work the server must do, then compare the full plans that can run it. Core count alone cannot tell you whether a CPU is faster for your software, whether storage or network is the bottleneck, or whether the plan’s billing model fits your use.
- Define the workload. Identify the software, expected concurrency, memory needs, storage pattern, network traffic, and whether the work is CPU-bound. A database, game server, compilation job, and parallel scientific workload may respond differently to the same CPU.
- Identify the exact processor and generation. Record the model, physical core count, and launch era. Do not treat a brand name, thread count, or advertised core label as a substitute for verifying the processor configuration.
- Match the rest of the hardware. Compare RAM amount, storage type and capacity, redundancy, network and datacenter location, and any included GPU or accelerator. If one plan has materially more RAM or different storage, its price per core is not an apples-to-apples comparison.
- Compare complete commercial terms. Record setup fees, monthly price at renewal, billing unit, minimum commitment, management, and support. Calculate the total cost for the period you expect to use the server rather than comparing only the headline monthly figure.
- Use workload-relevant performance evidence. Look for benchmarks that resemble your application and note the system configuration and test conditions. Hosting prices are not performance benchmarks.
What benchmark evidence can—and cannot—tell you
AMD’s official EPYC comparison page publishes SPECrate2017_int_base comparisons for named two-socket configurations, including an EPYC 9965 system with 192 cores and a Xeon 6980P system with 128 cores. These are vendor-published results, not an independent dedicated-hosting price or performance test. The named configurations and test matter: the figures should not be generalized to every AMD and Intel server or to a different workload.

A separate study accepted for IEEE Southeastcon 2025 examined a subset of SPEC ACCEL OpenMP workloads on AMD, Intel, and ARM instances across AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and Oracle Cloud, under on-demand and one-year discounted pricing. Its abstract reports that runtime and cost varied by provider and CPU family. That supports comparing workload and billing together, but the study concerns virtualized cloud HPC instances, not the bare-metal dedicated plans in HostingSift’s snapshot.
Limits and listing anomalies to keep in mind
HostingSift says older Hetzner price history was unusable because its scraper alternated between a current configuration price and a base catalogue price, so it manually checked current values against Hetzner.com. It also flags an Ultahost ULTA-X11 listing that advertises a “64-Core AMD EPYC 9454,” although that processor has 48 cores; the comparison used the host’s advertised number. These cases are reminders to verify a live listing and the exact CPU configuration before relying on a scraped plan figure.
