If the TV has compatible composite AV inputs, use a matching SNES Multi-AV composite cable. If it has only HDMI, use a compatible SNES-to-HDMI converter, cable, or retro-gaming scaler—and check that the TV accepts the SNES’s 240p signal before buying.
Check the console and TV before choosing a cable
This guide is for an original SNES, not the Super NES Classic Edition. The Classic Edition has its own HDMI setup procedure; Nintendo’s instructions for it do not describe connecting an original console: Nintendo’s Super NES Classic Edition setup.

- Identify your SNES model and region; cable compatibility can vary by revision and region.
- Look at the TV’s input panel and consult its manual for supported analog connections and signal formats.
- Match the cable or converter to both the console’s output and the TV’s accepted input signal.
The key is compatibility at both ends, not simply whether a product is advertised as an SNES cable. Specialist connection guidance describes several signal options and model or regional distinctions: Electron Shepherd’s SNES connection guide.

If the TV has compatible composite AV inputs
A matching SNES Multi-AV composite cable is a direct option when the TV has compatible composite inputs. Check the console revision, cable specification and TV manual rather than assuming that every SNES cable or television combination will work. Nintendo’s legacy support page documents its Stereo AV Cable and SCART Adapter, but does not establish compatibility for every console and TV combination: Nintendo UK’s Stereo AV Cable and SCART Adapter information.

If the TV has only HDMI
You will need a product that converts the console’s signal to HDMI, such as an SNES-specific HDMI cable or a dedicated retro-gaming scaler with HDMI output. Verify the product’s supported console model and region, its input signal requirements and the display modes it outputs. A specialist equipment listing shows a line doubler/upscaler with HDMI in a retro setup, but it is not a controlled compatibility test: The Super SNES equipment page.
Check 240p support in particular. Pound Technology, which makes an SNES HD Link Cable, warns that the console’s 240p output is not technically part of the HDMI standard and may not be accepted by every modern TV. Its guidance is product information, not independent comparative testing; check both the converter’s documentation and the TV manufacturer’s manual: Pound Technology’s SNES HD Link Cable information.

If you have other analog equipment
Composite, S-Video and RGB/SCART are possible signal paths discussed in specialist SNES guidance, but they are not interchangeable. Use a cable, adapter or scaler that matches the actual console revision, region and equipment already connected to the TV. Do not assume that a SCART or RGB cable is suitable just because it is labelled for SNES.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteConnect the SNES to the TV
- Choose the path: use composite if the TV manual confirms a compatible composite input; otherwise choose a compatible HDMI conversion product or scaler.
- Check compatibility: confirm the product supports your SNES model and region, accepts its signal, and outputs a mode the TV supports. For HDMI conversion, look for information about 240p handling.
- Connect the cable: attach it to the SNES and to the matching TV input, or connect the converter or scaler between the console and an HDMI input. Follow the product’s instructions for any power or additional connections.
- Select the TV input: use the TV’s input/source control to choose the port you connected. If the product has its own setup steps, follow its manual as well.
If there is no picture
- Confirm that the TV is set to the input used by the console, cable or converter.
- Check that each connector is attached to the intended port and that the selected path matches the TV input.
- Consult the TV manual to confirm it supports the incoming analog format or, for HDMI conversion, the output mode and 240p handling.
- Check the converter or scaler documentation for your specific console model and region; a generic SNES label does not guarantee a match.
There is no single troubleshooting sequence established for every original SNES, adapter and TV combination, so use the manuals for the exact devices in your setup.

What to compare when buying a converter or scaler
Compare the details that determine whether the equipment will work in your setup, rather than relying on a broad “SNES compatible” claim.
- Console support: the SNES model and region the product supports.
- Accepted input: whether it takes composite, S-Video, RGB or another signal your console and cable can provide.
- Output: whether it provides HDMI and which display modes it supports.
- TV compatibility: whether the TV accepts the resulting signal, especially when the source is 240p.
- Setup needs: any additional equipment or connections specified by the manufacturer.
The cited sources do not establish measured latency, comparative image quality or prices for individual products, so those should not be assumed from the product category alone.
