To connect an old Kindle, open Settings (or All Settings) → Wi-Fi & Bluetooth or Wireless → Wi-Fi Networks, choose your network, enter its current password, and tap Connect. If your network is hidden, choose Other and enter its name and password. If the Kindle cannot see or join the network, first check Airplane mode and credentials, then investigate router compatibility—Amazon says Kindle devices released before 2021 do not support 5 GHz Wi-Fi or WPA3.
Connect the Kindle to your Wi-Fi network
- Open Settings or All Settings. Depending on the Kindle generation, the wireless controls may be called Wi-Fi & Bluetooth or Wireless.
- Open Wi-Fi Networks and make sure Wi-Fi is on and Airplane mode is off.
- Select your network from the list, enter the current Wi-Fi password, and choose Connect. Passwords are case-sensitive, so check capitalization and any spaces or characters.
- If the network is hidden and does not appear in the list, select Other, enter the exact network name (SSID) and password, then connect.
Amazon’s Kindle internet connection instructions cover the connection process. Menu wording and placement vary by Kindle generation.

If the Kindle cannot find or join the network
Work through the checks in order; they help separate a simple saved-password problem from a signal or router compatibility issue.

Check the Kindle and Wi-Fi details
- Turn Airplane mode off and confirm Wi-Fi is enabled.
- Re-enter the current network name and password, especially if you recently changed either one. Check that another device can connect using those same details.
- If the network is missing from the scan list, move closer to the router and scan again. For a hidden network, add it manually using Other.
- Move the Kindle away from potential sources of wireless interference, such as a microwave or baby monitor.
Check whether the router supports the Kindle
Amazon states that Kindle devices released before 2021 do not support 5 GHz Wi-Fi or WPA3. This is a release-date rule, not a claim that every older model has identical wireless capabilities. Check the exact Kindle generation and the router’s settings before treating the device as faulty. If the router offers a 2.4 GHz network, try connecting to that network; do not assume a new router is necessary.

- Waterproof (IPX8) so you can read in the bath or by the pool. Your Kindle has been tested to withstand accidental immersion in water.

Amazon’s current Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the connection and restarting devices when problems persist.
Restart the Kindle and network equipment
- Restart the Kindle using its power menu or the restart option available for its generation.
- Restart the modem and router according to their instructions.
- Wait two minutes after restarting the network equipment, then try connecting the Kindle again.
Use a phone hotspot to isolate the cause
Try connecting the Kindle to a smartphone’s personal hotspot. If it connects to the hotspot but not your home Wi-Fi, the home network is the likelier source of the problem. That result does not identify the precise router setting; check the network band and security mode, or consult the router’s support information. If it cannot connect to either, continue with Kindle-specific checks.

When Wi-Fi works but Amazon registration does not
A Kindle may join Wi-Fi successfully yet fail to register with your Amazon account. Confirm the device’s date and time, verify your account credentials, install the software update for the exact Kindle model, and restart the device. Amazon’s Kindle registration help covers registration problems.
Check software updates for the exact Kindle generation
Use Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader Software Updates page to find instructions for your model. It includes legacy devices such as Kindle Keyboard (3rd Generation) and Kindle (2nd Generation). Follow the instructions listed for your specific generation rather than applying steps intended for a different Kindle.

Public Wi-Fi may require a sign-in page
Some public networks need a captive-portal sign-in, voucher, PIN, or one-time password after the Kindle joins Wi-Fi. If no welcome page appears, try loading a simple webpage to prompt it, then complete the network’s sign-in process.

A factory reset is a last resort, not a routine Wi-Fi fix. Amazon warns that resetting removes personal data, downloaded content, and content that has not synced, and deregisters the Kindle from your Amazon account. Before proceeding, sync anything you want to keep and review Amazon’s factory-reset instructions. If the Kindle still will not connect after the checks above, contact Amazon support with the exact model and the steps you have tried.
