Check the camcorder’s output and the TV’s inputs first. If both have composite A/V, connect yellow video to video and red/white audio to left and right, then set the camcorder to playback and select that AV input on the TV. If the TV has no compatible analog input, use a powered composite-to-HDMI converter. A camcorder with HDMI output can connect directly to the TV’s HDMI input.
Check the ports before buying a cable or converter
- Find the camcorder’s output. Look for A/V OUT, LINE OUT, S-Video, component, or HDMI OUT. Older models may use a proprietary socket on the camcorder end of a breakout cable, even if the other end has standard yellow, red, and white RCA plugs. Check the manual for the exact model and cable; the connection method can vary by cable and by whether a receiver or VCR is involved. - Check the TV’s inputs. Composite A/V usually uses a yellow video jack and red/white audio jacks. On some TVs, composite video shares the green component-video Y jack, which may be marked with a yellow ring or identified in the manual. Do not assume every green jack accepts composite; confirm the TV model’s instructions. See Panasonic’s analog connection guidance.
- If the TV has no compatible analog input, check for HDMI. You’ll need an active converter that takes composite RCA input and outputs HDMI. It must be powered, and it must support the camcorder’s video standard. An HDMI-to-AV adapter converts in the opposite direction and will not work for this setup. See the converter’s specifications for an example of the inputs, output, power, and formats to check.
Choose the connection that matches both devices
Composite A/V to composite A/V
Connect the camcorder’s A/V OUT to the TV using the correct model-specific cable. Match yellow to composite video, red to right audio, and white to left audio. Turn on the camcorder, start playback, and select the TV’s AV, Video, or similarly named input. Samsung says the camcorder must be in Player mode to send a signal.

Analog camcorder footage is standard definition. It may look softer on an HD television than HD video, and standard-definition images may use a 4:3 aspect ratio. The TV’s display may show the image with bars or scale it to fit, depending on its settings; scaling does not add recorded detail. Panasonic explains the limits of analog sources on HD televisions.

Composite A/V to an HDMI-only TV
- Connect the camcorder’s yellow, red, and white outputs to the converter’s matching RCA inputs. Use the right breakout cable if the camcorder has a proprietary A/V socket.
- Power the converter as specified by its manufacturer.
- Connect the converter’s HDMI output to an available HDMI input on the TV.
- Start camcorder playback and select that HDMI input on the TV.
Check the converter’s direction, supported PAL/NTSC-family formats, and power requirements before buying. A converter may offer 720p or 1080p HDMI output modes, but those modes do not turn an SD recording into HD footage. The AVSL product page, for example, describes a USB-powered model with three RCA inputs, HDMI output, support for PAL and NTSC-family formats, and 720p/1080p output options; these specifications apply to that model, not to every converter.

Camcorder HDMI output to TV HDMI input
If the camcorder has an HDMI OUT port, connect it to the TV’s HDMI input using a cable that fits the camcorder’s connector. Connector size and HDMI availability vary by model. Select the TV input you used and put the camcorder in playback mode. Canon’s guidance for the HF10/HF100 describes HDMI as a digital audio/video connection and notes that the camcorder’s HDMI terminal is output only. Do not connect two output terminals together. S-Video or a receiver in the signal path
S-Video or a route through a VCR or receiver may work when the camcorder, intermediary, and TV all have compatible connections. A receiver’s ability to pass through or convert the source signal affects whether you need another connection from the receiver to the TV. If the signal does not reach the TV through the receiver, try a direct connection when the ports allow it. See Sony’s connection guidance and Sony’s notes on receiver up-conversion.

Fix common connection problems
- No picture: Set the camcorder to playback or Player mode rather than camera/record mode. Confirm the TV is set to the input actually used, whether AV or HDMI.
- Picture but no sound: Check the red and white audio plugs and the selected TV input. Composite video and audio travel on separate plugs.
- No matching ports: Identify the camcorder’s actual output type and the TV’s supported inputs. If the signal types differ, use a compatible active converter; a passive cable alone does not convert composite to HDMI.
- Black-and-white or unstable picture: Check that the camcorder, converter, and TV are compatible with the video standard in use, such as PAL or NTSC. Support varies by model.
- Picture quality is poor: Composite analog footage is standard definition. A converter changes the connection format, not the detail captured in the recording.
- It works directly but not through a receiver: The receiver may not pass through or convert that source format. Connect the camcorder to the TV directly if compatible ports are available.
