Its biggest drawback, according to reviewers, is a story that can interrupt the action without delivering an equally satisfying payoff. It launched worldwide on October 2, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam.
What kind of game is Ace Combat 8?
ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE is a fictional aerial combat game set in Strangereal. It favors accessible, cinematic action over realistic flight simulation or a documentary-style account of real-world military conflicts. Bandai Namco describes it as the first mainline ACE COMBAT entry in seven years. The campaign follows Joker Flight amid a conflict involving the Federation of Central Usea and the Republic of Sotoa.

The distinction matters when weighing its pros and cons: the game is built around fast-paced flying and blockbuster set pieces, not strict simulation. The publisher lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam as its platforms, with an October 2, 2026 worldwide launch. Bandai Namco’s launch announcement and official game information describe the setting and release.

Flight combat feels immediate and energetic
The strongest point in the reviewed coverage is the sensation of controlling an aircraft in a fight. TechRadar called the combat “fun, varied, and razor-sharp,” praising dogfights and the satisfaction of evading incoming missiles. Tom’s Guide also liked the tactile connection between controller inputs and the aircraft’s movement. Those are reviewers’ impressions, not a guarantee that every player will prefer its handling, but they point to the game’s central appeal: responsive, cinematic aerial action.

Missions change up the objectives
The campaign is not limited to one kind of aerial engagement. TechRadar describes dogfights, close air support and attacks on enemy ships. Bandai Namco’s gameplay overview also highlights air-to-air combat, wingman commands, aircraft and weapons customization, and battles against massive targets. That range gives the campaign more ways to frame its flying than simply pursuing enemy aircraft in every mission.
Clouds and environments make a strong impression
TechRadar singled out the clouds and environments as visual highlights. This is a qualitative judgment from its reviewer rather than a measured comparison, but it captures an important part of the game’s spectacle: the scenery is meant to be enjoyed from the air as missions move through its skies.

Online play supports both cooperation and competition
Bandai Namco lists cooperative play, PvPvE, temporary PvP events and separate online progression. Its cross-play Air Base lobby is advertised for up to 100 players; that figure is the lobby’s capacity, not the number of players in a single match. The publisher’s multiplayer details explain the online modes and lobby.
There are options for different comfort levels and needs
TechRadar reports that the game offers two flight models, including a simpler option, as well as a colorblind HUD option and text-to-speech settings. These features make it worth checking the in-game options if a particular control or display setting matters to you; the reviewed material does not establish every detail of their operation.

Cons of Ace Combat 8
Story scenes can slow the pace
The main criticism in both TechRadar’s and Tom’s Guide’s coverage is the campaign narrative relative to the flying. TechRadar objects to long cutscenes and calls the ending anticlimactic; Tom’s Guide likewise finds the story less compelling than the combat. This is a matter of taste: players who enjoy melodramatic campaign framing may welcome it, while those eager to get back into missions may find the interruptions frustrating.
It is not a realistic flight simulator
The same arcade orientation that makes the action accessible is a drawback for anyone expecting realistic aircraft handling, tactical procedures or grounded geopolitics. Tom’s Guide characterizes the experience as blockbuster spectacle rather than realistic dogfighting. If simulation is your priority, the game’s fictional setting and action-first design are a mismatch, not a minor setting you can assume will change during the campaign.

- Unreal Engine 4 Technologies - Breathtaking clouds coupled with highly detailed aircraft and photorealistic scenery make this the most engaging Ace Combat to date.
- Dynamic Weather - Witness the sudden changes during your flight and strive to fight the environmental conditions to take advantage over your enemy.
- Return To Strange Real-World - The alternative Ace Combat universe is composed of real-world current and near-future weapons, but with a history steeped in Ace Combat lore.
Some series veterans may want a bigger leap
TechRadar found similarities to ACE COMBAT 7 and questioned how much impact wingman orders and loadout choices have. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a consensus verdict, but it is relevant if you are looking for a substantial change in the series rather than another campaign built around familiar aerial combat.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePC performance depends on your hardware
TechRadar tested the PC version on a system with an RTX 4070 and reported generally solid 60 fps at high settings, with dips during hectic moments. That result describes the reviewer’s specific PC and playthrough; it does not establish performance on other PC configurations or on consoles.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which platform and controls should you choose?
The game is listed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. For controls, a standard controller is a sensible starting point: TechRadar reports that an Xbox Wireless Controller worked well, and Tom’s Guide also praised controller feel. Tom’s Guide says a joystick and throttle can be paired, but the reviewed coverage does not verify compatibility for a particular model. Treat that as a general possibility rather than a recommendation or a requirement.
What about editions and extra content?
Bandai Namco announced Standard and Deluxe editions, digital preorder bonuses, a Premium Ace Pass and a Joker Flight Pack preorder offer. Its edition announcement describes a past offer, not proof that any preorder bonus or collector bundle remains available after launch. Check current platform-store or retailer listings for what is actually offered now. The publisher’s editions and preorder announcement describes the announced products.
The announced Premium Ace Pass Plus offer included an instant unlock of 30 Ace Pass levels. That is a specific offer detail from publisher materials, not a statement about what is currently purchasable or included in every edition. Confirm current terms in the store listing before buying.
How long is the campaign?
TechRadar’s Joe Chivers reported spending around 18 hours completing all 30 missions in his playthrough. That is one reviewer’s completion time, not a general estimate: pace, difficulty and time spent on other activities can change an individual player’s total.
