How to Connect an ESP32-C3 to Wi-Fi and Troubleshoot Gemini API Errors

A practical ESP-IDF v5.3 guide to ESP32-C3 station-mode Wi-Fi, IP readiness, disconnect recovery, and distinguishing Gemini API errors by status and API surface.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On an ESP32-C3, treat Wi-Fi connectivity and Gemini API failures as two separate stages. In ESP-IDF v5.3, wait for IP_EVENT_STA_GOT_IP before opening a socket; once the device has an IP address, diagnose Gemini failures from the HTTP status, response body, endpoint, and API version.

Connect the ESP32-C3 to Wi-Fi with ESP-IDF

The sequence below follows the ESP-IDF v5.3 station-mode guide. It uses ESP-IDF APIs and event names, not Arduino framework code. Check every API call’s return value; initialize all fields in Wi-Fi configuration structures, or retrieve the existing configuration before changing selected fields. Espressif’s ESP32-C3 Wi-Fi Driver guide describes this lifecycle.

  1. Initialize the network interface layer with esp_netif_init() and create the default event loop.
  2. Create the default station interface with esp_netif_create_default_wifi_sta().
  3. Initialize the Wi-Fi driver with esp_wifi_init().
  4. Set station mode with esp_wifi_set_mode(WIFI_MODE_STA), then configure the station SSID and password using the station configuration API.
  5. Start the driver with esp_wifi_start().
  6. In the WIFI_EVENT_STA_START handler, call esp_wifi_connect().
  7. Wait for IP_EVENT_STA_GOT_IP before opening sockets or sending an HTTP request.

Association is not the same as having an IP address

WIFI_EVENT_STA_CONNECTED means the station has associated with the access point. DHCP starts afterward. For socket work, wait until IP_EVENT_STA_GOT_IP; Espressif identifies this as the point when an LwIP-based application is ready to create TCP or UDP sockets. Starting socket work before then is a common mistake.

Troubleshoot Wi-Fi before debugging Gemini

  • Verify the SSID and password and confirm the access point is available. A wrong password or an access point that cannot be found can prevent connection.
  • Log the reason code from WIFI_EVENT_STA_DISCONNECTED. Possible causes include failure to find the access point, authentication timeout, lost beacons, an access-point disconnect, or a changed authentication mode.
  • On an unexpected disconnect, reconnect when appropriate, but do not assume existing sockets remain usable. Close and recreate affected sockets after connectivity returns.
  • If the device reconnects but requests still fail, check whether it received a different IP address. Sockets depend on the IP address, so recreate them when necessary.
  • Do not automatically treat an intentional esp_wifi_disconnect() as a fault that requires reconnection.

If the ESP32-C3 has not obtained an IP address, a Gemini HTTP status cannot explain the failure: first resolve Wi-Fi association and DHCP. If it does have an IP address but no usable HTTP response arrives, investigate the client-side path—including DNS, TLS, timeouts, and connection handling—before interpreting the problem as a Gemini API error. These checks follow Espressif’s documented network-event sequence; they are not board-specific test results.

  • Entering download mode: Press and hold the BOOT button of ESP32C3, then press the RESET button, release the RESET button, and then release the BOOT button, at this time, ESP32C3 will enter the download mode. (You need to re-enter the download mode every time you connect, sometimes you press it once, the port is unstable and will disconnect, you can judge it by the port recognition sound)

Diagnose Gemini errors from the response

Record the endpoint, API version, HTTP status, and response body. The table below summarizes the status meanings documented for the GenerateContent API (Legacy); the JSON error object can include code, message, status, and optional details.

HTTP status and error Likely cause What to check
400 INVALID_ARGUMENT Malformed request, typo, missing field, unsupported parameter, or API-version mismatch. Compare the payload fields and structure with the reference for the endpoint and version you are calling.
400 FAILED_PRECONDITION A prerequisite is unmet, such as a billing requirement or country-specific free-tier eligibility. Check the project’s billing state and account prerequisites.
403 PERMISSION_DENIED The key or project does not have permission to access the resource. Verify the API key, project access, and required permissions.
404 NOT_FOUND A referenced resource or media item is missing, or the path or parameters are wrong. Verify resource identifiers, endpoint path, and parameters.
429 RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED A request or token rate limit, daily quota, or spend limit has been exceeded. Check the model’s current limits, reduce request rate or size, wait for capacity, or request a quota increase.
500 INTERNAL A server-side failure; Google also cites excessively long context as an example. Check service status, consider reducing context, and retry cautiously if the failure appears transient.
503 UNAVAILABLE Temporary overload or service outage. Check service status and use bounded backoff if retrying.
504 DEADLINE_EXCEEDED Processing exceeded the allotted deadline; a large prompt or context can contribute. Check the client deadline or timeout and reduce request size where appropriate.

For a 400 error, also check whether the model is supported and the API version supports the feature you selected. The Gemini API Troubleshooting guide lists candidate count from 1 to 8, temperature from 0.0 to 1.0, and top-p from 0.0 to 1.0 as ranges on that page. These are not guarantees for every model or API version; verify the current reference for the model you use.

Retry only failures that may be transient

Google recommends exponential backoff with jitter and a maximum retry count for retryable failures such as 429 and 503. Official SDKs include retry behavior for transient errors, but settings and behavior depend on the SDK and version, so check the one in use. For direct REST or custom retry code, cap both the number of attempts and the waiting period rather than retrying indefinitely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not blindly retry client or configuration errors. Google specifically advises against retrying client errors such as 400, 402, or 403 until the underlying issue is fixed. Correct the request, billing prerequisite, key, or permissions first.

Keep GenerateContent and Interactions errors separate

The status table above is for GenerateContent, whose reference is explicitly labeled Legacy. Google’s separate Gemini API errors page describes the Interactions API, including machine-readable snake-case error codes and error events in the server-sent-events stream for streaming requests. Do not assume that its code strings or response format apply to GenerateContent. Diagnose against the documentation for the API surface and version your device actually calls.
