How to Connect an Echo Device to Wi-Fi with Alexa

Set up an Echo on Wi-Fi, update its saved network after a router or password change, and work through common connection problems.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To connect an Echo speaker without a screen, open the Alexa app, tap Devices, then + > Add Device > Amazon Echo > Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Pop and more. Follow the prompts to choose your Wi-Fi network and enter its password. These steps connect an Echo device running Alexa; a separate smart-home device may need to be set up in its manufacturer’s app first.

Connect an Echo speaker for the first time

  1. Install or update the Alexa app on your phone or other mobile device.
  2. Plug in the Echo and wait for it to power on.
  3. Open the Alexa app and tap Devices.
  4. Tap the + icon, then choose Add Device.
  5. Choose Amazon Echo, then Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Pop and more.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to select your home Wi-Fi network and enter its password.

Amazon’s Echo setup instructions may appear slightly differently depending on the model. For example, setup for the 2024 Echo Spot begins by scanning the QR code shown on the device; you can also open the Alexa app and select Add to start manual setup. See Amazon’s Echo Spot setup steps.

Change Wi-Fi or reconnect an Echo

If you changed your router, network name, or password, use the Alexa app for an Echo without a screen:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Alexa app and tap Devices.
  2. Select the Echo, then open Device Settings.
  3. Choose Change or remove a Wi-Fi network.
  4. Select a saved network or tap Join another Wi-Fi Network, then follow the prompts.

For an Echo with a screen, change its Wi-Fi settings on the device itself. Amazon’s Wi-Fi update instructions cover the device-specific process.

Fix common Wi-Fi setup problems

Work through these checks in order, retrying setup after each change.

  • Check the app and password. Update the Alexa app and confirm the Wi-Fi password is entered correctly. Amazon lists both among its Wi-Fi setup troubleshooting steps.
  • Check whether the internet is working elsewhere. Try connecting another phone or computer. If multiple devices cannot get online, troubleshoot the router or contact your internet service provider.
  • Move the Echo closer to the router. Amazon recommends keeping it within 30 feet (10 meters) of the router. This is setup guidance, not a guaranteed performance range. Move the Echo away from likely sources of interference as well. See Amazon’s Echo Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide.
  • Try the other Wi-Fi band. If your router shows separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, select the other band during setup. Amazon describes Echo compatibility with common home Wi-Fi networks on 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz using 802.11a/b/g/n. Echo devices cannot connect to ad-hoc or peer-to-peer networks. See Amazon’s Wi-Fi network guidance.
  • Restart the Echo. Unplug it for 30 seconds, plug it back in, and try again. If setup still fails after the other checks, retry using a phone hotspot; reset the Echo if needed. Amazon’s setup troubleshooting guidance describes these later steps.

If you meant a smart-home device rather than an Echo

Alexa is the voice assistant running on an Echo, but many smart-home products have their own Wi-Fi setup process. For a non-Matter Wi-Fi device, first follow the manufacturer’s instructions in its app; then enable the relevant Alexa skill if the product requires one. Matter-certified products can follow a different setup flow. Amazon explains the distinction in its smart-home device setup guidance.
