What the 181+ provider figure means
WENKER-AI describes Wenker Router as a self-hosted gateway that exposes upstream AI services through OpenAI-style and Anthropic-style interfaces. Its repository lists cloud providers including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, as well as local options such as Ollama, LM Studio, and vLLM. The project reports 181 providers, 269 statically registered model entries, and 560+ routable model IDs when historical aliases are included; these are different counts, not a promise that every model is available, free, credentialed, or working for every user. The gateway is an intermediary, not a model host or access grant. A request goes to the configured upstream provider, or to a local model service you have configured. You remain responsible for the provider’s credentials, availability, quota, and any charges.

Choose an installation route
The official README documents source checkout, a Windows batch file, global npm installation, and running through npx. Choose based on whether you want to work with the source and how you plan to maintain the installation; the project documentation does not establish that one method is more secure or reliable than another.

These commands and the Node.js 18-or-later prerequisite come from the official README. Install and start the gateway from source

The repository documents these setup steps, but no independent installation or API-call test is established here.
Configure a provider and connect a client
Add credentials or a local endpoint
Use the console’s provider configuration and API-key management areas to set up the upstream service or local model endpoint you intend to use. Wenker Router’s README describes the console as including provider configuration, routing, key management, and request logs. For stable access to a named model, the project’s guidance is to supply that upstream’s own API key: “需要 key 的就是需要 key。想要稳定用上某个具名模型（比如真正的 DeepSeek / Qwen / Llama），请在「供应商」页填入该上游自己的 API key。” — WENKER-AI project README. If you choose a local option such as Ollama, LM Studio, or vLLM, configure the corresponding local service and make sure the desired model is available there. The gateway does not make a model available simply by listing a route for it.

Set the client base URL
For an OpenAI-compatible client, use http://localhost:3600/v1 as the base URL and configure the WENKER key expected by the gateway. The README lists model-list, chat-completions, and embeddings routes. For a compatible Anthropic-style client, it documents the /v1/messages endpoint. Consult the client’s own settings for the exact field names; they vary by client. WENKER-AI repository.
Understand free-tier limits and charges
Some upstream sources may offer free quotas, but they remain subject to the provider’s limits and can return errors such as 402 or 429. A listed provider or model ID is not evidence of free access. Named models may require an upstream API key, and the upstream may bill for use. Check the provider’s current terms and quota before directing requests to it.

Check network exposure before relying on localhost
Self-hosting does not by itself mean that the service is isolated to your machine. The README says the server defaults to binding to 0.0.0.0. It also describes a credential guard for remote administrative /api requests, while stating that this guard does not apply to /v1/* requests; client API calls use the WENKER key. These are project-described behaviors, not an independent security audit. WENKER-AI repository.

Set up and protect the client credential expected for
/v1/*; do not assume the admin-request guard also protects model API calls. -
The project says keys, logs, and configuration are stored locally and that a cloud request is sent upstream when you explicitly invoke that provider. Treat this as the project’s description of its behavior, not a verified security guarantee.
When this setup is a good fit
Wenker Router can be useful if you want one local gateway configuration for multiple cloud providers or local model services, and you are prepared to manage upstream credentials and availability. If you want a named model to work reliably, configure its actual upstream credentials or confirm it is served by your local endpoint. The provider and model counts describe routing entries and aliases, not guaranteed access.
