7-Zip Can Hide Archive Names With Password Encryption

7-Zip’s 7z archives can encrypt file contents and, with header encryption enabled, hide filenames until the password is entered.

The likely “hidden security tool” in 7-Zip is password-based encryption for 7z archives. Turn on header encryption when creating an archive and its filenames are concealed along with its contents until someone supplies the password. This protects the archive’s confidentiality; it does not scan for malware or secure the rest of your computer.

What 7-Zip’s encryption protects

7-Zip’s 7z format supports AES-256 encryption. According to the project’s 7z format documentation, the encryption key is derived from the password using a SHA-256-based function with many iterations. Those iterations are intended to increase the work required for exhaustive password guessing.

With header encryption enabled, the archive’s filenames are hidden until it is opened with the password. Without that option, file contents can be encrypted while names remain visible. Concealing names can matter when a filename itself reveals sensitive information, such as a person’s name or a confidential project.

What it does—and does not—do

  • It does: protect the contents of an encrypted archive from someone who does not know its password; header encryption also conceals filenames.
  • It does not: make a weak password safe from guessing, guarantee that an archive cannot be cracked, detect malware, or protect files after they have been extracted.

Use a long, unique password and share it through a separate, appropriate channel rather than placing it beside the archive. Anyone who receives both the archive and its password can open it.

Using the feature safely

The exact current 7-Zip interface labels and click sequence are not established here, so avoid relying on a guessed walkthrough. When creating a 7z archive, look for the password and header-encryption options in the archive creation controls, enable header encryption if filenames must be private, and confirm that the recipient’s software can open password-protected 7z files. Test access with a non-sensitive sample before sending important files.

Keep a recoverable copy of the password somewhere separate from the archive. If it is lost, the encryption may prevent you—and the recipient—from recovering the archived contents.

Keep 7-Zip updated, too

Encryption does not remove security risks in the application that handles archives. The 7-Zip project history records security fixes in versions 25.00 and 25.01 related to symbolic-link processing during extraction. A 2026 GitHub Security Lab advisory describes memory-access issues in 7-Zip 26.00 and says fixes were released in 26.01. The NIST NVD record for CVE-2026-48101 also identifies versions through 26.00 as affected by an uninitialized-memory disclosure in the UEFI capsule parser, with 26.0.1 listed as fixing it.
