How to Connect a Wireless Printer to Wi-Fi Without a Computer or App

A printer can often join Wi-Fi without a computer or app if it has an on-device setup wizard or supports WPS with your router. You still need a source device to send print jobs.

Yes—if your printer has a wireless setup menu on its control panel, or if both the printer and router support WPS, you can connect the printer to Wi-Fi without a computer or smartphone app. You will still need a computer, phone, tablet, or other supported device to send a document to print. Wi-Fi Direct also needs a source device, but connects it directly to the printer instead of through your home router.

Choose the setup method that fits your printer

Method What it does What you need Limitation
Printer control-panel wizard Connects the printer to your home Wi-Fi by selecting the network name and entering its password on the printer. A printer with the relevant on-device menu, plus your Wi-Fi network name and password. Not every printer has a usable screen or wireless setup wizard; menu names and controls vary by model. HP wireless setup guidance
WPS push-button pairing Connects the printer to the router without manually entering the Wi-Fi password. WPS support on both the printer and router or access point. Not all printers and routers support WPS, and the connection window is model-specific. Brother WPS guidance; HP printer manual
Wi-Fi Direct or Wireless Direct Connects a computer or mobile device directly to the printer rather than through the home router. A compatible printer and a source device that can join the printer’s direct network and send the job. It does not connect the printer to your home Wi-Fi; internet access may not be available through the direct connection. Epson Wi-Fi Direct guidance; Brother Wireless Direct guidance
USB-assisted software setup Uses printer software on a computer to configure the wireless settings. A computer, USB cable, and supported software. It requires a computer, so it does not meet the no-computer requirement. HP wireless setup guidance

Connect through the printer’s control panel

  1. Find the Wi-Fi details. Have the network name (SSID) and password or security key ready. The printer needs these to join the network. HP printer manual
  2. Open the printer’s wireless setup. On its screen or control panel, look for a menu called Setup, Network, Wi-Fi, Wireless, or Wireless Setup Wizard. The exact label depends on the model.
  3. Select your home network. Choose the correct network name from the list displayed by the printer.
  4. Enter the network password. Use the printer’s controls to enter the security key, then confirm the connection. Check the printer’s screen or status indicator for a connection result; the available confirmation varies by model.

Some printers do not have a screen or offer a way to enter Wi-Fi details on the device. If you cannot find a wireless setup wizard, check the manual for your exact model rather than trying an undocumented button combination. Manufacturer setup methods can vary by model and country. Connect with WPS push-button pairing

Use this route only if both your printer and router support WPS. WPS push-button pairing avoids entering the Wi-Fi password, but it is not the same as using a WPS PIN in a computer’s printer-add flow.

  1. Check both devices. Confirm the printer’s manual offers WPS push-button setup and the router has a WPS button or equivalent supported control. Brother advises checking for WPS support on both devices. Brother WPS guidance
  2. Place the printer within router range. Keep it as close to the access point as practical, with as few obstructions as possible; distance and surroundings affect the wireless connection. Brother WPS guidance
  3. Start WPS on the printer. Follow the model-specific instructions to begin push-button pairing.
  4. Press the router’s WPS button within the printer’s connection window. The cited Brother product guidance describes a two-minute attempt, and an HP manual likewise directs users to press the router button within two minutes after starting WPS on the machine. Follow the timing in your own printer and router instructions. Brother WPS guidance; HP printer manual
  5. Check the connection result. If pairing does not complete, verify compatibility and follow the manuals’ retry instructions. If your router does not support WPS, use the printer’s control-panel wizard if available instead of repeatedly trying WPS.

Use Wi-Fi Direct for a direct connection

Wi-Fi Direct is useful when you want a source device to connect straight to a printer, not when your goal is to put the printer on your home Wi-Fi. It does not eliminate the need for a device to choose and send the print job.

#1 Best Overall
  1. Enable Wi-Fi Direct or Wireless Direct on the printer. Whether it is available and how to turn it on depend on the model.
  2. Get the printer’s network details. Some printer procedures let you print a network status sheet containing the direct-network name (SSID) and password. Epson Wi-Fi Direct guidance
  3. Connect your computer or mobile device to that network. Use the printer’s displayed or printed details, then send the job using a supported printing method.

A direct connection is separate from your home router. Brother warns that its Wireless Direct connection does not provide internet through Wi-Fi. Brother Wireless Direct guidance

What to check if setup does not work

  • The printer cannot find your Wi-Fi network: Confirm you are selecting the intended network and that the printer is within router range. Check the model manual for network compatibility and setup requirements.
  • The printer rejects the password: Re-enter the network key carefully using the printer’s controls. The control-panel route requires the network name and key. HP printer manual
  • WPS pairing times out: Make sure both devices support WPS and start the router’s push-button step within the model’s stated window. If either device lacks WPS, try the printer’s on-device wizard or consult its manual. Brother WPS guidance
  • You see a WPS PIN prompt: A PIN-based printer-add flow is distinct from router push-button WPS and may involve a computer. For a computer-free attempt, use the router’s push-button method only if the printer and router instructions support it. HP Wi-Fi Direct and WPS guidance
  • You can connect, but cannot print: Network setup and sending a print job are separate tasks. Use a supported computer, phone, tablet, or other source device to select the document and submit it.

When a computer or app is unavoidable

If your printer does not offer a control-panel wireless wizard, WPS, or another documented computer-free method, its supported setup may require a computer, USB cable, or app. A USB-assisted software setup is not a computer-free workaround. Check the exact model’s manual for the available options; printer-specific controls and procedures are not universal. HP wireless setup guidance; Brother wireless setup guidance
