If you recently changed your Galaxy tablet’s PIN, password, or pattern, try the previous lock first: eligible devices may let you recover access without erasing local data. If that option is unavailable, Samsung’s documented fallback is to erase and reset the tablet—removing its data and potentially requiring the Google account previously used on it during setup.
Can you unlock the tablet without losing data?
Try your previous screen lock first
Samsung says qualifying Galaxy devices running One UI 6.1 or later may accept the previous PIN, password, or pattern after a lock change. Samsung retains the previous lock for 72 hours after the change, and the feature can be used once per lock type. After five or more failed attempts, an eligible device may show a “Forgot PIN/Password/Pattern” option. Availability and wording vary by model and software version. Samsung’s India instructions describe the recovery flow.

- Enter the current lock incorrectly until the forgotten-lock option appears, if your tablet supports the feature.
- Choose the option to use the previous PIN, password, or pattern, then enter the lock you used before changing it.
- Set a new screen lock if prompted.
Be careful: Samsung says three incorrect entries of the previous lock block further attempts. If you do not know the old lock or the recovery option does not appear, do not keep guessing; move to the reset choices below.

What if previous-lock recovery is unavailable?
Samsung’s current documentation points locked-out users toward erasing the tablet rather than promising a general remote-unlock option. Remote erase and recovery-mode reset both remove data stored locally on the tablet. Choose a reset only if you accept that loss or have a backup you can restore.

Erase it remotely with Samsung Find
If the tablet is registered to your Samsung account and meets the requirements for remote controls, you may be able to erase it through Samsung’s device-finding service. Samsung says the tablet must be powered on, connected to a stable network, linked to a Samsung account, and configured to allow remote controls. If it is offline, an erase request may take effect when it next connects. Samsung’s lost-device guidance explains the conditions.
- Sign in to SmartThings Find with the Samsung account associated with the tablet.
- Select the registered tablet and choose “Erase data,” if that action is available.
- Follow the on-screen confirmation steps. The erase deletes the tablet’s local data; it does not preserve files while removing the screen lock.
Remote-unlock availability is not consistent across regions and guidance. Samsung UK says remote unlocking is no longer available in the relevant locked-out scenario and that a factory reset is required if remote unlock was not set up. Samsung Hong Kong describes an unlock feature for Hong Kong products, which should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. Check your region’s Samsung support information rather than relying on a remote-unlock promise. Samsung UK guidance and Samsung Hong Kong guidance outline those regional differences.

Reset from recovery mode
Recovery-mode reset is a physical-button route, but Samsung’s steps vary by Galaxy Tab model. Its France support instructions begin by powering off the tablet and connecting it to a computer with a USB cable, then use the volume buttons to select “Wipe data/factory reset” and the power or Bixby button to confirm. Button layout and procedure can differ, so consult the instructions for your exact model before proceeding; do not treat one sequence as universal. Samsung France’s recovery-mode guidance provides an example.
What happens after a factory reset?
A reset restores factory settings and deletes personal data stored on the tablet. Samsung’s US guide describes Google Factory Reset Protection as applying to devices running Android 5.1 and later; after reset, setup may require the Google account previously registered on the tablet. On devices running Android 9 or later, Samsung says the previous screen-lock method may also be accepted for verification. A reset does not remove ownership checks. If the tablet asks for an account you cannot access, use Google’s account recovery process or contact Samsung support. Samsung directs users who cannot complete verification to a service center. Bring proof of ownership if requested; service support should not be assumed to recover erased data or bypass account protections.

Which route should you choose?
- You changed the lock recently and remember the old one: try previous-lock recovery first; it may preserve the tablet’s local data.
- You can access the registered Samsung account and remote controls were enabled: remote erase may work, but it deletes local data.
- Remote erase is unavailable: check the recovery-mode instructions for your exact model and reset only after considering data loss.
- You cannot pass Google verification after reset: recover the previously used Google account or contact an authorized Samsung service center.
