What you need before connecting a server
- A Cursor installation with MCP server settings available.
- For the Playwright example below, Node.js 20 or newer, as specified by the Playwright MCP getting-started guide.
- The command, endpoint, and any credentials required by the particular MCP server you intend to use. The Playwright command is not a universal command for other providers.
Cursor’s MCP documentation describes connecting Cursor to external systems and data. Cursor supports local command-based STDIO servers as well as remote servers configured by URL; the right configuration depends on the server provider. See Cursor’s MCP documentation.

Connect Playwright MCP from Cursor settings
- Install or verify Node.js 20 or newer.
- In Cursor, open Settings → MCP → Add new MCP Server.
- Name the server (for example,
playwright), choose the command server option, and enternpx @playwright/mcp@latest. - Save the server configuration. The Playwright guide says the browser downloads automatically on first use.
- Ask Cursor Agent to navigate to the target website and take a screenshot. Playwright MCP exposes a
browser_take_screenshottool with options that include full-page capture and output format; see its tool documentation.
Configure Playwright MCP with JSON
For a project-specific server, create .cursor/mcp.json in the repository root and add:

Choose project, global, local, or remote configuration
- Project configuration: Use
.cursor/mcp.jsonwhen the server belongs with a particular repository or project setup. - Global configuration: Use
~/.cursor/mcp.jsonfor a personal server you expect to use across projects. - Local STDIO: The Playwright example starts a local process using a command and arguments.
- Remote URL: For a hosted MCP provider, configure the URL and any required headers or authentication according to that provider’s instructions. Do not substitute the Playwright command for a remote service’s endpoint.
Cursor’s built-in Browser tool and an external MCP server are separate options: the Browser tool provides Cursor-managed browser capabilities, while an MCP server is an independently configured integration. Use the server provider’s official setup instructions if you need a particular third-party or internal implementation.
Use the connected server safely
MCP tools may be able to access websites or perform browser actions, so review what the server does and which permissions it requests before enabling it. Cursor documents approval before tool use by default, along with controls for allowlisting servers and tools. In managed environments, administrators may apply command or URL restrictions and network controls. Check the provider and your organization’s policies before granting access.

If the server depends on environment variables, make sure they are available to Cursor. Cursor supports environment-variable interpolation in MCP configuration; if you have changed shell-profile variables, its help guidance recommends restarting Cursor.
Troubleshoot connection and screenshot problems
- The server does not appear or connect: Confirm the JSON is valid, the command and arguments match the provider’s instructions, and the server is enabled. For the Playwright setup, verify Node.js 20 or newer.
- The browser does not start on first use: Allow the Playwright installation to download its browser, as described in the getting-started guide, and retry the screenshot request.
- Environment-variable values are missing: Check that the variables are available in Cursor’s environment; restart Cursor after shell-profile changes.
- A tool call fails or returns an unexpected result: Open Cursor’s Output panel and select MCP Logs to inspect connection and tool errors. Also confirm the server is enabled under Customize → MCP.
- You are using another provider: Verify its own transport, authentication, command or URL, browser prerequisites, and screenshot tool name. MCP servers do not all expose the same tools or use the same configuration.

Does Cursor need to be restarted after I add a server?
The documented setup directs you to save the configuration and check the MCP controls. A restart is specifically advised when shell-profile changes affect environment variables.
