Connect a PS4-compatible USB headset—or its supplied wireless USB adapter—to a console USB port, then choose where the PS4 sends sound under Settings > Devices > Audio Devices. Select All Audio for game sound and chat, or Chat Audio for chat alone. Check the headset’s exact-model PS4 compatibility: a USB connection does not guarantee every headset will work.
Check how your headset connects
USB headsets generally connect to a PS4 in one of two ways: by plugging the headset itself into the console, or by plugging in a wireless USB adapter that communicates with the headset. Follow the headset’s manual for its required connection or pairing steps.

- Wired USB headset: Plug its USB connector into a PS4 USB port.
- Wireless headset with a USB adapter: Plug the supplied adapter into a PS4 USB port, turn on the headset, and follow the model’s connection instructions.
- Bluetooth-only headset: Do not assume it will work like a USB-adapter headset. Sony’s PS4 FAQ said in 2013 that third-party wireless headsets using Bluetooth would not be supported, while most USB headsets would be supported after system software update 1.50. That historical statement is not a current compatibility list for every headset.
Before setup, check that the headset manufacturer explicitly lists your exact model as PS4-compatible and says whether its microphone works through the connection. Sony’s Gold wireless headset manual, for example, documents setup using its supplied adapter and gives a software-version requirement for that particular headset; its instructions should not be applied to other models.

Route PS4 audio to the headset
- Connect the headset or its wireless adapter, then open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices.
- Open Output to Headphones.
- Choose All Audio to hear game and other console audio as well as chat through the headset. Choose Chat Audio if you want chat through the headset only. PlayStation Support says Chat Audio is the default setting; its audio output instructions describe these options.
PS4 voice chat and game audio cannot be output to the headset and TV simultaneously under the console’s specifications. If you expected both, the headset and TV routing options do not provide that arrangement.

Check whether the microphone works
- Go to Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Adjust Microphone Level.
- Speak into the headset microphone and watch the Input Volume bar. Sony’s microphone troubleshooting guidance uses this bar to check whether the PS4 is receiving input.
- If the bar does not respond, check that the headset is selected as the input device, inspect the headset’s mute switch or button, and verify its connection instructions.
Unmute the microphone using the headset’s own hardware control if needed. For model-specific reset instructions, use the directions for that exact headset; Sony’s wireless headset troubleshooting page covers mute checks and reset steps for its products.
Fix common USB headset problems
The PS4 does not detect the headset
- Confirm you are using the headset’s supported PS4 connection method: direct USB or its own wireless USB adapter.
- Check the manufacturer’s compatibility statement and connection instructions for the exact model.
- Try another console USB port as a basic isolation step. If available, testing another known-compatible headset can help determine whether the issue is with the headset or the console.
Do not assume a USB hub or an unrelated adapter is supported. Sony’s headset manual warns that some USB devices or hubs may not provide enough power for charging; that charging warning does not establish whether a device will work for audio.

There is no game sound or no chat audio
- Return to Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Output to Headphones and choose All Audio for game sound plus chat, or Chat Audio for chat only.
- If one audio type is missing, check the headset’s game/chat balance controls if its manual says they apply to your model and connection mode. Such controls are not universal.
The microphone level does not move
- Recheck the selected input device and make sure the headset is not muted.
- Follow the headset’s connection and microphone instructions, then check the Input Volume bar again.
- If possible, try another headset or controller to help isolate the source of the problem.
Wireless audio skips or the connection drops
Sony recommends moving a wireless USB adapter away from USB 3.0 devices, or using a USB extension cable to increase the distance between the adapter and other USB devices. Check the headset’s own manual for any additional model-specific steps.
