Connect a Tesla Model 3 from the touchscreen at Controls > Wi-Fi: choose a network, enter its password if needed, and tap Confirm. The car saves the network and reconnects when it is in range. Tesla’s manuals give the same main steps for 2017–2023 and 2024+ Model 3 vehicles, though labels can vary with software version or region.
Connect your Model 3 to Wi-Fi
- On the touchscreen, tap Controls > Wi-Fi. The car scans for and displays nearby networks.
- Tap the network you want. If it is not listed, use the option to add a network manually.
- Enter the password if prompted, then tap Confirm.
- Check Known Wi-Fi Networks for the network and a green check mark to confirm connection. The car reconnects to a saved network when it is in range.
If the wording differs on your screen, open the Wi-Fi page or the owner’s manual in the car; menu details may vary by software version and region.

Choose home Wi-Fi or a phone hotspot
Wi-Fi gives the car another way to access data and can be faster than cellular, particularly where cellular service is limited or unavailable. Actual performance depends on the network and signal where the car is parked.
Recommended Free Tools
| Option | Useful when | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Home Wi-Fi | The network reaches the car’s usual parking spot. | Weak coverage at the parking location can make the connection slow or unavailable. |
| Phone hotspot | You need an alternative network or the car is outside home Wi-Fi range. | Carrier fees or restrictions may apply. After connecting, select Remain Connected in Drive if you want the hotspot connection to stay active after shifting into Drive. |
The Remain Connected in Drive setting does not remove carrier charges or guarantee hotspot coverage. Public Wi-Fi networks that require a browser-based sign-in page or acceptance of terms are not supported by Model 3, according to Tesla’s manual; use another network or a hotspot instead.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep Wi-Fi available for updates
Tesla recommends Wi-Fi for software and map updates. Its Model 3 Owner’s Manual says: “To ensure fast, reliable delivery of software and map updates, Tesla recommends leaving Model 3 connected to a Wi-Fi network whenever possible (for example, when parked at home).”
Improve weak or missing Wi-Fi signal
If a known network does not appear or the connection is weak, first check whether the signal reaches the car’s parking location. Tesla recommends moving closer to the access point or considering a range extender. For a home network, the practical test is whether coverage reaches the place where the car is normally parked; a range extender is optional, not a requirement for connecting the car.

Check the Wi-Fi icon’s signal bars. If they are low, improving access-point proximity or adding a closer Wi-Fi access point may help. If the router uses 5 GHz Wi-Fi, supported channels vary by region; consult Tesla’s current regional channel table and check the channel selected on your router rather than assuming a channel list from another market applies.
Troubleshoot a Model 3 Wi-Fi connection
Try Tesla’s recommended checks in order. These steps may help identify or resolve a connection problem, but they are not guaranteed fixes.
