You can connect a Roku to a phone hotspot through the same wireless setup used for ordinary Wi-Fi: turn on the hotspot, choose it from the Roku’s wireless network list, enter its password, and connect. Streaming and updates then use mobile data, so check your plan before watching or updating.
Connect Roku to a phone hotspot during setup
-
Turn on the hotspot in your phone’s settings. The exact menu path depends on the phone; Roku’s instructions do not specify separate iPhone or Android steps.

Understand what uses mobile data
Roku needs internet to stream shows and movies and to receive updates. Roku cautions that “Hotspots use mobile data, and streaming or updates can use a lot.” Check your carrier’s data allowance and costs before streaming or allowing updates over the hotspot; Roku does not provide a per-hour data estimate in its connection guidance.

Without internet, Roku use is limited to HDMI, cable, or over-the-air broadcasts. If your mobile allowance is limited or the hotspot connection is unreliable, use another available Wi-Fi network, or wait to stream and update until you have a suitable connection. Roku also supports wired Ethernet on some players; some models support Ethernet with a USB adapter, but this is model-dependent and is not a hotspot accessory. Details are in Roku’s internet connection instructions.
Hotspot internet and the Roku phone app are separate
A phone can provide the Roku’s internet connection through its hotspot, but Roku’s app guidance says the phone and Roku device need to be on the same Wi-Fi network for the app to connect. It does not guarantee that the app will discover or control a Roku using that same phone’s hotspot. Roku also identifies iOS Local Network permission and VPNs as possible app-discovery factors. See Roku’s mobile-app connection guidance.
