Match the connection to the inputs on your TV: use the PS2’s composite cable for composite inputs, a compatible component AV cable for component inputs, or an analog-to-HDMI converter or scaler if the TV has no matching analog input. Then select that input on the TV. For component video, check the PS2’s Component Video Out setting.
Check which inputs your TV has
Look at the TV’s rear and side panels for input labels before choosing a cable. Smart TVs do not all have the same connections, and the right setup depends on the inputs available on your particular model.

- Composite: usually yellow for video and red and white for audio.
- Component: Y, Pb and Pr video inputs, plus red and white audio inputs.
- HDMI only: you will need a compatible converter or scaler that accepts the PS2’s analog output and sends a signal the TV supports.
Connect the PS2 to composite inputs
- Connect the PS2’s yellow video plug to the TV’s yellow composite video input.
- Connect the red and white audio plugs to the matching audio inputs.
- Turn on the TV and select the input connected to the PS2. The input label may vary by TV model.
Connect the PS2 to component inputs
Component video uses Y/Pb/Pr for picture and separate red and white leads for audio. Sony’s setup instructions describe connecting those plugs to the corresponding COMPONENT IN connections, then selecting that TV input: Sony’s component connection guide.
- Use a PS2-compatible component AV cable. Sony’s PS2 quick reference describes component AV cabling as sold separately: PS2 SCPH-90002/SCPH-90003 quick reference.
- Connect the cable’s Y, Pb and Pr video plugs to the matching TV inputs, and connect the red and white audio plugs to the corresponding audio inputs.
- On the PS2, open System Configuration and check the Component Video Out setting. Sony’s SCPH-50002 manual warns that if component is connected without setting Component Video Out to Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr, the TV screen “might not display properly”: PS2 SCPH-50002 manual.
- Select the TV input connected to the console.
If your smart TV has HDMI but no analog inputs
Choose an analog-to-HDMI converter or scaler that explicitly accepts the PS2 output connection you plan to use. Check its compatibility information and confirm that your TV supports the converter’s HDMI output. Some devices carry audio through HDMI; others may require separate red and white audio connections, so check the device’s instructions.
#1 Best Overall
- WORKS WITH PS2 & PS1 — PHAT AND SLIM — Connect your PS2 (both original Phat and Slim models) or PS1 directly to any modern HDTV, monitor, or projector via HDMI. No drivers required. Just plug in and play your classic game library on your modern display within minutes.
- WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE PICTURE — This adapter converts your PS2/PS1's analog AV signal to HDMI so it works on modern TVs. The PS2 hardware outputs a standard-definition signal (480p max) — the adapter upscales this to 720p for a cleaner look, but cannot go beyond the console's own limits. Great for retro gaming; not a 4K upgrade.
- 4:3 / 16:9 ASPECT RATIO SWITCH — One button to toggle between classic 4:3 and widescreen 16:9 display. Supports 480p and 720p resolution output. Low-latency signal processing for responsive, lag-free gameplay — ideal for action and rhythm games where timing matters.
- POWER REQUIRED — PLEASE READ BEFORE BUYING — This adapter requires an external DC 5V/1A USB power source to operate. A USB cable is included; a USB power adapter is NOT included. Use any standard phone charger or plug into your TV's USB port. No power = no signal output.
- IMPORTANT — PS2 AND PS1 ONLY — Works exclusively via the PS2/PS1 AV output port. Does NOT support PS3, PS4, or PS5. Does NOT work with HDMI capture cards, splitters, or passthrough devices — connect directly from console to TV. Not compatible with BlackMagic brand displays.
There is no single adapter compatibility guarantee for every PS2 and smart TV. Check the converter’s documentation for the console and connection type before buying; the TV’s input options vary by model and region. Sony’s TV help likewise notes that available options depend on TV model and region: Sony TV help for video game consoles.

Troubleshoot a missing picture or sound
- No picture or sound: confirm the TV is set to the input where the PS2 or converter is connected.
- Component connection with no proper picture: check that the PS2’s Component Video Out setting matches the component connection. Sony warns that the wrong setting can prevent a proper display.
- Picture but no sound: check the red and white audio plugs and make sure they are connected to the TV’s audio inputs associated with the selected input.
- Using a converter: confirm that it accepts the PS2’s output path, that its power and connections are set up as directed, and that the TV is on the converter’s HDMI input.
