The Nikon Z 6II is a capable 24.5MP full-frame mirrorless camera with in-body stabilization, two different card slots, and a well-rounded stills-and-video feature set. It is most compelling for Nikon shooters who can use compatible existing lenses, need a backup-card workflow, or find it at an attractive price. Its 4K UHD 60p mode is limited to 8-bit DX crop, and its autofocus and viewfinder should be weighed against newer options rather than assumed to lead the class.
What the Nikon Z 6II is—and what changed
The Z 6II is a 2020-era full-frame camera built around a 35.9 × 23.9 mm FX-format CMOS sensor with 24.5 million effective pixels and Nikon’s Z mount. Nikon specifies two EXPEED 6 processors and five-axis, sensor-shift in-body vibration reduction; compatible lenses with optical VR can work with the in-camera system. Nikon lists an approximate weight of 615 g for the body alone, or 705 g with battery and card, excluding the body cap. Nikon’s product specifications are the source for these figures.

Compared with the original Z6, the II added a second processor, dual card slots, and support for an optional full battery grip, alongside incremental autofocus improvements. DPReview characterized it as a subtle refresh with a broadly similar, well-rounded stills and video feature set. That is a 2020 assessment, not a current comparison against every newer camera. DPReview’s Z6 II review also discusses the autofocus changes and viewfinder in the context of the competition at the time.

Resolution and stabilization
At 24.5MP, the Z 6II offers a practical middle ground for general photography: enough resolution for substantial prints and moderate cropping, without making pixel count its defining advantage. Actual image quality depends on the lens, exposure, subject, and processing; the specifications alone do not establish how it compares with a particular rival in a real shoot. Five-axis in-body stabilization can help reduce camera shake, especially with lenses lacking their own VR, but it cannot freeze a moving subject.

Autofocus features and limits
Nikon lists 273 focus points in FX single-point mode and people and animal detection for stills and video. Its stated photo-mode AF detection range is -4.5 EV to +19 EV under specified conditions, with low-light AF extending the lower end to -6 EV. These are manufacturer sensitivity specifications, not guarantees of tracking success. Subject movement, lens motor response, lighting, AF-area choice, and settings affect real-world acquisition and hit rate.
DPReview reported incremental autofocus improvements over the original Z6, including additional face and eye detection choices within Wide-area AF. That supports viewing the II as a refinement, not as proof of class-leading tracking by current standards. If fast, erratic subjects are your main concern, compare recent cameras using representative tests and the lenses you plan to use.

How fast can it shoot?
Nikon advertises up to approximately 14 frames per second, but that maximum depends on settings: its US marketing specification ties it to Continuous H extended with single-point AF. Nikon also gives an approximately 124-shot buffer under a particular configuration using 12-bit lossless-compressed RAW and a named CFexpress card. Neither number should be treated as a universal rate or buffer for every autofocus mode, file format, or card. See the conditions in Nikon’s specifications before planning a demanding burst workflow.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor sports or wildlife, the headline frame rate is only one part of the decision. Consider whether single-point AF suits your subject, how long the camera sustains a burst in your chosen format, and whether your card and workflow can clear the buffer quickly enough between sequences.

Video: 4K 60p comes with a meaningful limitation
The Z 6II records 4K UHD at up to 60p, but that mode is 8-bit and uses a DX crop. If you need full-frame coverage at 60p, or want higher bit depth recorded internally, this is not the mode Nikon specifies. A crop also narrows the angle of view, which can make wide framing harder with a given lens.
Nikon lists N-Log and HLG external-recording workflows, as well as optional RAW output. Those workflows can involve compatible external equipment and conditions that vary by firmware, recorder, service, and region; check the current official details before budgeting or choosing a production setup. The Z 6II can suit a hybrid shooter who accepts the crop and understands the recording path, but video buyers seeking uncropped high-frame-rate recording should compare alternatives closely.

Two card slots, two media formats
The camera has one CFexpress Type B/XQD slot and one UHS-II SD slot. Nikon says the slots can be configured for backup, separate RAW and JPEG storage, or copying between cards. That flexibility is valuable for event work where an in-camera second copy matters, but the mixed formats mean you should account for the cost and convenience of the media you will actually use. Nikon’s specification page lists the slot types and recording options.

A dual-slot camera does not automatically create a backup: configure the recording destination for the job, verify the setting before shooting, and check that both cards have adequate capacity and are working correctly.

Using existing Nikon lenses and choosing accessories
Z-mount and F-mount lenses
Nikon Z-mount NIKKOR lenses attach directly. F-mount NIKKOR lenses require an FTZ-series adapter, and compatibility is not universal across every older or third-party lens and function. Nikon USA’s compatibility guidance specifies FTZ adapter firmware v1.10 or later for its stated support. Check the exact lens and adapter combination—especially autofocus and VR behavior—against Nikon’s compatibility information before relying on it professionally.
Battery and grip
The supplied battery is the EN-EL15c. Nikon says EN-EL15b, EN-EL15a, and EN-EL15 batteries can also be used, but yield fewer pictures per charge. The MB-N11 is the vertical-control grip; Nikon’s stated 1.9× battery-performance comparison is for two EN-EL15c batteries in the grip versus one EN-EL15c in the body, not a universal battery-life measurement. Nikon also lists the MB-N10 battery pack. Confirm the accessory and battery details on Nikon’s product page.
Is the Nikon Z 6II still worth buying?
It can be a sensible purchase if its actual price and condition match your needs. A Nikon DSLR owner with compatible lenses may value the adapter route; photographers who need two-card recording can benefit from the distinct slots; and stills-focused users may find the balance of resolution, stabilization, and burst capability attractive. A hybrid shooter should be comfortable with the 4K60p crop and 8-bit limit.
Be more cautious if your priorities are the latest subject tracking, uncropped high-frame-rate video, or newer-generation features. The available evidence does not establish current retail or used prices, stock, or fresh head-to-head results, so value depends on the listing in front of you. For a used body, inspect condition, shutter count, warranty, and included accessories; compare it with current alternatives on autofocus, video modes, card workflow, native lenses, handling, and total system cost.
Firmware and buying checks
Nikon’s Download Center surfaced C firmware 1.70 dated 2025-06-03; firmware changes over time, so use the live Nikon Download Center page to confirm the current release and instructions for your region. Before purchase or a major shoot, check the exact body firmware, lens compatibility, card types, and any external-video requirements against Nikon’s current documentation.
