Connect a powered subwoofer to a compatible line-level output on your powered speakers or audio source, then match that output to the subwoofer’s input with the correct cable. Check both devices’ rear panels and manuals first: some offer RCA or 3.5 mm analog connections, while others provide a dedicated subwoofer or LFE output. Never connect powered speakers to an amplifier’s speaker terminals.
Check the outputs and inputs before choosing a cable
“Active” and “powered” mean the speaker has its own amplifier. To feed a powered subwoofer, you need a compatible signal output—not an amplified speaker output. Port labels and routing vary by model, so identify the exact speaker or source output and subwoofer input before connecting anything.

- On the speaker or audio source, look for a dedicated SUB OUT or LFE output, an RCA line output, or a 3.5 mm analog output.
- On the subwoofer, check for an LFE input, mono or stereo RCA inputs, or a 3.5 mm analog input.
- Match the cable to the actual ports. A 3.5 mm connection on one device does not mean the subwoofer has the same input.
Audioengine’s S6 Wireless Subwoofer Setup guide and S8 Powered Subwoofer setup page illustrate RCA and 3.5 mm analog hookup options. These are examples for those products, not a guarantee that every powered speaker or subwoofer supports the same connections.

RCA line output to RCA subwoofer input
If the active speakers provide a compatible RCA line output and the subwoofer has RCA inputs, use an RCA audio cable. Follow the manual for which subwoofer input to use. For the Audioengine setup described in its S6 guide, a single subwoofer/LFE RCA output can connect to the subwoofer’s left RCA input.

3.5 mm output to an analog subwoofer input
Some compatible systems support a 3.5 mm analog connection. Use a cable with the correct plug at each end if the devices have different analog connectors; confirm the subwoofer input format and the speaker’s output function in their manuals. Audioengine’s FAQ notes a model-specific case where an A1 or A1-MR subwoofer output uses RCA even though other connections on the speakers may use 3.5 mm.
Dedicated SUB OUT or LFE output
Connect a dedicated subwoofer or LFE output to the subwoofer’s matching input, following the product instructions. If the source has one RCA sub/LFE output and the subwoofer has left and right RCA inputs, some manufacturers specify using the left input; do not assume that applies to every model.

Receiver or other source in the signal path
If a receiver is switching or supplying the signal to active speakers, connect the speakers only to a receiver’s preamp or line-level output. Audioengine warns that connecting powered speakers to amplified speaker-level terminals can cause damage. Its FAQ on active speakers explains this distinction.
No suitable output on the speakers
Do not infer that a speaker can connect to a subwoofer just because it is powered. Check the speaker and source manuals for an approved line-level output or supported routing method. There is no universal workaround established for speakers without a suitable output; a compatible signal-routing device may be needed, or the system may not support a direct subwoofer connection.

Connect and tune the system
- Power off the equipment. Connect the cable between the compatible line-level output and the subwoofer input identified in the manuals.
- Power on and start at a low volume. Confirm the source is routed to the output feeding the subwoofer and that the subwoofer is powered.
- Set the subwoofer level conservatively. Raise it gradually until the bass blends with the main speakers rather than overpowering them.
- Adjust crossover and phase if available. Make small changes and listen for a smooth transition between the speakers and subwoofer. Room, placement, and personal preference affect the useful settings; Audioengine’s S8 Setup Guide treats these as system-dependent adjustments.
- Use the system’s own crossover instructions. Some systems filter the main speakers when they detect a subwoofer; others let the main speakers continue playing their usual range while the sub adds bass. Do not copy settings from another model.
For example, the SVS Prime Wireless Pro manual says subwoofer detection activates an 80 Hz high-pass filter on the speaker output and recommends a 90 Hz low-pass setting on the subwoofer. Those values describe that particular system, not a universal starting point. Audioengine’s S8 guide says its crossover control is inactive when using the LFE input.
When a cable is impractical
A wireless line-level adapter may help when cable routing or subwoofer placement is difficult. It does not remove the need for compatible analog connections or power: the transmitter and receiver still need to connect to the appropriate line-level outputs and inputs. SVS describes this kind of RCA-connected arrangement on its SoundPath Tri-Band Wireless Audio Adapter page. Check its connection types and power requirements against your specific devices before choosing one.

Troubleshoot missing or uneven bass
No bass from the subwoofer
- Verify that the cable connects an actual line-level or subwoofer output to the subwoofer’s compatible input.
- Check that the source is routed to that output and the subwoofer is powered.
- Check the subwoofer level and the relevant system settings, then consult the manuals for both devices.
Bass sounds boomy, weak, or disconnected
Adjust level, crossover where available, phase, and placement in small increments. These controls interact with the speakers and room, so there is no single setting that suits every system. If the subwoofer is connected through an LFE input, check the manual: on the Audioengine S8, the crossover control is inactive in that mode.
