If the app supports OpenAI-compatible APIs, a local server can often fit with a base-URL change; otherwise, use the server’s native API or add an adapter. For example, Ollama documents a native chat endpoint at http://localhost:11434/api/chat and an OpenAI-compatible base URL at http://localhost:11434/v1.
How the connection works
A model file by itself is not an API. A serving runtime loads the model and exposes HTTP routes that accept requests and return generated output. Your app sends prompts to one of those routes, just as it would send a request to a hosted provider, but the server can run on your own computer or another host you control.

The app and server must agree on the request format, endpoint, model identifier, and any required authentication. An OpenAI-compatible route can reduce changes when the app already uses an OpenAI-shaped client, but compatibility does not guarantee that every optional feature behaves identically.

| Ollama | Native API under http://localhost:11434/api; OpenAI-compatible base URL http://localhost:11434/v1 |
Its local requests do not require authorization. The API is not strictly versioned, though Ollama says backwards compatibility is expected. Ollama API documentation |

Connect an app step by step
- Install and select a serving runtime. Ollama or LM Studio offer desktop-oriented setups; vLLM is a serving option for deployment-oriented use; llama.cpp provides a server option for GGUF models and CPU/GPU use. Confirm the runtime supports the model you intend to load.
- Start the server and load the model. Follow the runtime’s model-loading instructions. In LM Studio, you can start the server from the Developer tab or with
lms server start. Ollama’s documentation directs users to install it and run a local model. The llama.cpp server documentation gives127.0.0.1:8080as its local default listener. - Choose the API route the app can call. Use the native API when you need provider-specific controls or the app supports only that format. If the app has an OpenAI-compatible client, use the server’s compatible route. With Ollama, the OpenAI-compatible base URL is
http://localhost:11434/v1; its native chat route ishttp://localhost:11434/api/chat. - Set the app’s connection details. Enter the local server’s base URL in the app’s API or provider settings, then select the model identifier the server expects. Supply an API key only if the server is configured to require one: Ollama’s documented local example omits authorization, while llama.cpp supports optional API-key configuration. Do not assume a placeholder key is accepted by every server.
- Send a basic test request. Start with a short prompt and confirm the app receives a normal response. Once that works, test only the extra capabilities your app needs, such as streaming, tool calls, embeddings, or multimodal input.
- Secure the endpoint before making it reachable elsewhere. Keep the service on the same machine when practical. For LAN or public access, check which interfaces and routes are exposed, configure suitable authentication and origin/network controls, and review route-level protections.
Check feature compatibility, not just the URL
An endpoint that accepts a chat request may not support every feature the app expects. Before building a workflow around a local server, compare the exact route and model requirements with the app’s needs.
- Chat and templates: vLLM’s Chat Completions route requires a compatible chat template for the model.
- Streaming and tools: Verify these explicitly; support can vary by server, route, and model.
- Structured output and context controls: Check the route documentation for the specific controls your app uses rather than assuming an OpenAI-compatible URL reproduces all hosted-provider behavior.
- Stateful conversations and MCP: LM Studio documents differences among its native, Responses, Chat Completions, and Anthropic Messages endpoints, including variation in stateful chat and MCP support.
- Embeddings and multimodal input: Confirm the selected route and loaded model support the required input or output type before wiring it into the app.
LM Studio’s endpoint comparison is documented in its API overview; vLLM describes its compatible routes and chat-template requirement in its OpenAI-compatible server documentation.

Localhost, LAN, and security
localhost refers to the machine making the connection. It works when the app and inference server run on the same computer. If the app runs on a phone, another computer, or a separate container or host, its localhost points to that device—not to the computer running the model. You will need a reachable server address and network configuration appropriate to that setup.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not treat a local URL as evidence that a server is safe to expose to a network. LM Studio documents serving on localhost or the network. Ollama says local requests do not require authorization; that statement does not establish that a network-exposed service is authenticated. llama.cpp documents API-key and CORS controls. vLLM cautions that “API key authentication does not protect every endpoint” and advises additional deployment hardening, such as a reverse proxy. Review the relevant LM Studio server documentation, Ollama API documentation, llama.cpp server documentation, and vLLM security guidance before allowing access beyond the local machine.

Troubleshoot common connection failures
- Connection refused or timeout: Check that the server is running and listening at the address and port configured in the app. If the app is on another device, replace its use of
localhostwith an address reachable from that device. - Unknown model or model not found: Use the exact model identifier exposed or required by the runtime, and confirm the model has been loaded.
- Bad request or missing fields: Confirm the app is calling the correct native or compatible route and sending the request format that route expects.
- Authentication error: Match the app’s key setting to the server’s configuration. A key field in the app does not mean the local server requires or accepts a key.
- Chat route fails despite a successful connection: Check model-specific requirements such as vLLM’s chat-template requirement, then verify the model can respond through the chosen route.
- Basic chat works but an advanced feature fails: Treat that as a feature-compatibility issue, not proof that all routes or capabilities are supported. Test the exact feature and endpoint separately.
When a local API is the right fit
A local API is useful when an app can be configured with a custom endpoint and the selected server supports the model and features the app needs. If the app hard-codes a hosted provider, lacks a configurable base URL, or depends on an unsupported API feature, a compatible endpoint alone may not be enough; you may need an adapter or a different app integration. Model hardware requirements depend on the model and workload, so there is no single machine specification that applies to every setup.
