Connect the Paperwhite with a USB cable that supports data and fits both the Kindle and the computer. The Raspberry Pi or mini PC must act as the USB host. When the operating system detects the Kindle, use its file manager or normal storage-mount tools to copy files, then eject or unmount the reader before unplugging it.
What you need
- A Kindle Paperwhite with its charging/data port accessible. Check the connector on your specific reader: Amazon’s setup page for the documented 11th Generation model identifies USB-C, but that does not establish the connector used by every generation. Amazon’s Kindle 11th Generation setup guide says the supplied cable can connect that model to a computer for charging and file transfer.
- A USB cable that carries data, not only power, and fits the Kindle port and a USB host port on the computer. If the supplied cable works, you do not need to buy another one.
- A Raspberry Pi or mini PC whose USB port is operating as a host, so it can detect the Kindle as a peripheral.
Connect and transfer files
- Identify the Paperwhite’s connector and choose a compatible data cable. Check both ends before connecting; connector types vary across devices and boards.
- Connect the Kindle to a USB host port on the mini PC or Raspberry Pi. For a Raspberry Pi Zero, use its USB/OTG-capable port rather than the separate PWR IN port. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation says a micro-USB OTG adapter is needed to connect conventional USB devices when the cable does not fit, and that some peripherals may need a powered hub.
- Wait for the operating system to detect the Kindle. On a desktop, check the file manager for a newly connected drive. On Linux, use the distribution’s usual storage and mount tools to inspect detected devices; there is no single device path that applies to every Pi, mini PC, operating system, and Kindle.
- Copy supported files into the appropriate location on the Kindle. The cited Amazon guidance establishes USB transfer, but does not give a complete file-format list for every Paperwhite model.
- Eject or unmount the Kindle in the host operating system before disconnecting the cable. Amazon’s Mac transfer instructions describe the Kindle appearing as an external drive and direct users to eject, undock, or unmount before unplugging.
Raspberry Pi or mini PC: which should you use?
Either can serve as the host if it has a suitable USB host port and its operating system detects the reader as storage. For a one-off file transfer, a mini PC with a desktop file manager is often the more straightforward workflow. A Pi can do the same job, but the correct port and adapter matter on boards such as the Pi Zero. The cited documentation does not establish a speed or reliability advantage for either option.

USB host mode is not gadget mode
For a direct Kindle connection, the Pi needs to act as a USB host: it detects the Paperwhite as a connected peripheral. Raspberry Pi’s OTG application note distinguishes host mode from device or gadget mode, where a supported Pi can present itself as a USB device to another computer. Gadget mode is a different setup and is not needed for this transfer.
Raspberry Pi documentation also describes using a flash drive as removable storage for file transfer and backups, but that does not establish a USB flash drive as a direct Kindle accessory. See Raspberry Pi’s USB accessories guidance.

- powful cputhe cpu of the raspberry pi 4 model b adopts the latest arm cortex-a72 architecture, which is also used in high-performance smartphones, and has evolved into a real pc.the operating clock has been changed from pi3's 1.2ghz to 1.5ghz, and the speed has become a different dimension with the updated architecture.
- video output/gputhe on-board gpu of the raspberry pi 4 supports 4kp@60 and newly supports h.265 decoding, opengl es 3.0, etc.as for the video output, two micro hdmis with smaller connectors are installed, and the raspberry pi 4 also supports dual screen output.
- usb 3.0with a new soc, the speed of the raspberry pi 4 around i/o has been improved, and finally usb 3.0 is supported.usb boot is faster and more convenient.
- network&bluetoothgigabit ethernet (wired lan) has also been significantly speeded up from 300mbps of pi 3b + to 1000mbps (logical value).in addition, bluetooth supported version has been upgraded to 5.0, and the transfer speed of pi 4 has been doubled.
- power input connectorthe power input connector of the raspberry pi 4 has been changed to usb type c. it is easier to use than micro usb and can supply a larger current reliably.the power requirement of raspberry pi 4 model b is 5v 3.0a, which is higher than the previous model.

If the Kindle does not appear
- Try a cable known to support data; a charge-only cable can power the Kindle without enabling file transfer.
- Try another USB port on the host.
- On a Pi Zero, confirm that the cable is connected to the USB/OTG-capable port, not PWR IN, and use a suitable OTG adapter if required.
- Check the operating system’s device or storage list and, on Linux, its device logs and mount information. Avoid assuming a fixed
/dev/sdXname; device assignments vary. - If the Kindle appears but files are not visible where expected, confirm that the files are supported and placed in the appropriate location for the reader.
