What separates these two MSI gaming laptops?
The comparison is between a specific Katana 15 HX B14W configuration and the Crosshair A16 HX D8W product family, not two fully matched machines. MSI lists the Katana SKU B14WGK-251PH with an Intel Core i7-14650HX and RTX 5070 Laptop GPU. The Crosshair family offers configurations up to AMD Ryzen 9 8000 HX processors and includes RTX 5060 and RTX 5070 variants. Crosshair A16 HX: more screen space and refresh
The listed Crosshair panel has 240Hz refresh and a 2560 × 1600 resolution. Compared with the Katana’s 165Hz, 2560 × 1440 panel, it offers a higher refresh rate and more vertical pixels. That is a clear specification advantage for buyers who prioritize a faster, roomier display; it does not by itself prove better brightness, color accuracy, or gaming performance.

Crosshair A16 HX: a second M.2 position
The Crosshair family lists two M.2 positions, including one Gen5-compatible slot, while the cited Katana specification lists one Gen4 slot. That gives the Crosshair more listed SSD expansion flexibility. The documents do not establish the practical upgrade procedure or service requirements, so check those before opening either laptop.
Memory capacity depends on the exact configuration
Both models list two memory slots and support up to 96GB. The cited Katana SKU ships with 16GB as two 8GB modules; Crosshair installed memory varies by listing. Compare the capacity you receive and the cost of any upgrade rather than assuming the family specification describes the sale unit.

What do independent Katana tests tell you?
Tom’s Guide tested a Katana configuration with an i7-14650HX and RTX 5060—not the RTX 5070 SKU in the MSI specification table. In that review unit’s tests, it recorded a Geekbench 7 multi-core score of 16,584, a Handbrake 4K-to-1080p transcode time of 3:24, peak brightness of 262.2 nits, and 5 hours 9 minutes in its light-use battery test. These results belong to that configuration and test methodology; they are not guaranteed results for every Katana.

PC Gamer’s review, published September 30, 2026, covered a UK Katana configuration with an i7-14650HX, RTX 5060, 16GB DDR5, and a 2560 × 1440 165Hz display. It reported a £1,300 price for that review configuration and raised concerns about cooling and observed GPU power behavior. That regional review price is not a verified current deal, and its findings should not be generalized to every SKU.

The available independent results do not provide a matched Crosshair test. They therefore cannot establish which laptop is faster or lasts longer in a direct comparison.
Is the Crosshair worth paying more for?
It may be, if the price premium buys features you will use: the QHD+ 240Hz display and additional M.2 position are the clearest differentiators in the listed specifications. If the Crosshair listing has a lower-tier GPU, less memory, or a different processor than the Katana listing, weigh those differences against the screen and storage expansion rather than treating the family names as equivalent.

The available prices do not establish a current sale comparison. Tom’s Guide lists Katana B14W starting and top configurations at $1,284 and $1,999 in the US, and £1,299 and £1,799 in the UK; these are reported configuration prices, not verified active discounts. MSI’s US store lists a Crosshair A16 HX MLG Edition with Ryzen 9 8940HX, RTX 5070, 16GB RAM, and 1TB SSD at $2,399.99, with a future ship date shown. That listing is not a verified sale and is not directly comparable with the different Katana configurations.
