To connect a home battery to a virtual power plant (VPP), find a program serving your address, confirm it accepts your exact battery and inverter, review how it can dispatch stored energy, then enroll through the provider and complete any required utility approval. A battery described as VPP-capable is not necessarily compatible with every program—or enrolled in one.
What connecting a home battery to a VPP means
A VPP coordinates many energy resources, such as household batteries, so they can support the electricity grid. The connection is generally a remote enrollment and control arrangement, not a universal cable or add-on. Your battery must be installed and configured for its intended operation, and the provider must be able to communicate with the system.

There is no single enrollment flow: programs set their own locations, equipment requirements, account conditions, and approval steps. The Australian Government’s YourHome battery guidance notes that owners do not have to participate just because their battery is VPP-compatible.

Record your equipment and account details
Before contacting providers, gather the battery brand and model, inverter model, usable capacity if known, installation and commissioning status, service address, electricity utility or retailer, and whether the system is grid-connected. Check that the battery has a reliable internet connection: remote management depends on the system being reachable.

Find a program serving your territory
Start with official VPP pages from your battery manufacturer, electricity retailer, utility, or an aggregator. Confirm that enrollment is open for your current address and ask whether the account holder, electricity plan, or retailer must meet specific conditions. Some offers require a compatible retailer or utility account.
For example, the NSW Government’s VPP incentive information describes a local incentive with provider and retailer conditions. Those rules apply to that NSW program, not to VPPs everywhere.
Verify the exact battery and inverter
Ask the provider to confirm both your battery and inverter model, rather than relying on a “VPP-ready” label. Providers choose which equipment they support, and compatibility can differ across programs. An ACCC analysis in its June 2026 National Electricity Market report compared 16 popular batteries with a sample of 14 VPP products and found that many batteries matched only some of the programs examined. The regulator cautioned that its sample might not be comprehensive or current; it is not a global compatibility rate. See the ACCC June 2026 report.

- One Powers All. The unit of DELTA Pro Ultra whole house generator includes an inverter and a battery. One inverter supports 120V & 240V and has an exceptional 7200W output, allowing you to run almost any heavy household appliance, even a 3-ton central air conditioner. Triple the inverters for an incredible 21.6kW AC output, allowing you to live life to the fullest even during an outage. The electric generator achieves a total 7200W output even during charging.
- Strong Power Security. Scalable from one battery of 6144Wh, two days of essential power, all the way to 15, it multiplies the energy to a gigantic 90kWh. For a standard North American household, that's over 30 days of essential power secured.
- Customize Your Home Power. Use the EcoFlow app to priolritize specific circuits in your home, extending your backup even longer. For more than just blackouts, it intelligently analyses your home power usage to offset peak rates while utilizing solar to lower energy bills.
- Multi Ways to Charge. One battery of 6144Wh can be fully recharged in 2 hours. Faster than any other 6kWh solar generator. Users can choose among electric vehicle piles, solar, wall outlets or outdoor generators for charging.
- Uninterrupted Life. Online UPS with 0-ms transfer time, offering 24/7 protection for sensitive electrical devices against power disturbances or grid failure. All fans are off for the first half hour of outputting 2000W, giving you absolute silence for tranquility in everyday life.
Compare control, backup, and payment terms
Read the current program terms before signing. The key question is not just what you may receive, but what control you grant and how that could affect your household’s use of stored energy.
- Dispatch: when events can occur, how long they may last, how much capacity the provider can access, and whether events are limited by season or time of day.
- Backup reserve: the minimum charge the system should retain for household use, and how the program behaves during an outage or severe-weather event.
- Notice and opt-out: whether you receive event notifications and can decline a dispatch, and what conditions apply.
- Compensation: whether payment is an enrollment incentive, recurring payment, bill credit, or compensation for exported energy; check when it is paid and what can change it.
- Eligibility and exit: contract length, retailer-switch rules, cancellation or disenrollment process, and any paperwork required for incentives.
- Connectivity: what happens if internet access, telemetry, or communication with the battery is interrupted.
Terms are program-specific. For instance, the Tesla Virtual Power Plant powered by San Jose Clean Energy describes a 20% reserve, event notifications, an opt-out, and Storm Watch behavior for that particular Powerwall program. Those are not default settings for other VPPs.
Enroll through the provider and complete any review
- Choose a provider and confirm eligibility. Give it your address, battery and inverter models, and utility or retailer details; ask it to confirm the live program requirements.
- Review and accept the current terms. Check dispatch access, reserve behavior, compensation, opt-out, retailer conditions, and cancellation before signing.
- Submit the provider’s application. Use its app, website, or other specified channel and provide the requested customer, account, and system information.
- Complete any utility or program approval. Enrollment may be subject to review; do not assume submission means the system is participating.
- Confirm activation in the provider’s app or portal. Check that the battery is shown as enrolled and connected, and review the participation and reserve settings.
Two official examples show why the process varies. EG4 says a qualifying system must first be installed, commissioned, and connected to EG4 Connect; the owner then views programs available for the system and location, submits customer and utility details, and may need to wait for utility or program review. Its EG4 Grid Services enrollment guide notes that availability, requirements, and incentives vary by location.

For the San Jose Clean Energy Powerwall program, Tesla describes an in-app application that requests account details and requires a completed battery interconnection application; the utility reviews applications. These are examples, not requirements that apply to every provider.
Understand grid connection and outage backup
VPP participation and backup operation are separate questions. A grid-connected battery may shut down during an outage for electrical-worker safety. Backup power may require suitable equipment and electrical work, so ask your installer whether your specific system is configured to power the circuits you need. A VPP’s reserve or dispatch rules can also affect how much energy is available to your home.
Do not change wiring, inverter settings, or grid-export configuration yourself to join a program. Ask the installer, utility, or VPP provider about interconnection approval and technical changes. Some programs require an approved or completed battery interconnection before they will accept an application.

What payments or incentives can you expect?
There is no general VPP earnings figure that applies across locations and providers. NSW Climate and Energy Action says households may earn up to A$300 per year in bill credits or direct payments on its general VPP information page. “Up to” is a program-specific ceiling, not a promised or typical return. The NSW incentive page says actual value depends on the provider and contract, including payment for exported energy and when and how much battery capacity may be accessed.
For that NSW incentive, the page describes eligible grid-connected batteries with capacity greater than 2 kWh and up to 50 kWh; its calculation uses usable capacity up to 28 kWh. A participating provider and compatible electricity retailer are also required. These are NSW program rules, which may change; check the official page and your provider’s current terms before relying on them.
