How to Connect a Headset to Xbox, PlayStation, or PC: Key Compatibility Facts

Match your headset’s connection type to a supported port or wireless system, then configure audio output and microphone input separately. Platform and model support determine which features work.

Match your headset’s connection type—3.5 mm, USB, Bluetooth, or a dedicated wireless receiver—to a port or wireless system your console, controller, or computer supports. Then check audio output and microphone input separately: a headset can connect successfully without every chat or control feature working.

Identify the headset connection first

Check the headset’s model instructions or product label to determine how it connects. A USB plug may provide audio on a supported device, but USB charging alone does not establish USB audio compatibility. Wireless headsets may also require their own receiver rather than a generic Bluetooth pairing.

  • 3.5 mm wired: Uses a compatible headset jack on a controller or computer.
  • USB: Works only where the device supports the headset’s USB audio connection.
  • Bluetooth: Requires both the headset and target device to support Bluetooth audio.
  • Dedicated wireless receiver: Uses the headset’s matching adapter and platform-specific setup.

Connect a headset to Xbox

Wired 3.5 mm headset

Xbox says a wired headset with a 3.5 mm jack can connect to an Xbox Series X|S controller. Insert the plug into the controller’s headset jack. If audio or microphone input is missing, check the console’s audio and chat controls and confirm the connector is seated fully.

That support statement applies to the controller connection described by Xbox; it does not establish that every headset feature works identically on every model.

Wireless headset

Wireless connection options vary by headset. Depending on the model, a headset may use Xbox Wireless, a supported USB-C cable, or a separately sold Windows wireless adapter. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model and intended platform rather than assuming a USB or Bluetooth headset will work.

Connect a headset to PlayStation

Wired headset through a controller

A wired headset can connect to the DualSense controller’s headset jack. For the DualSense headset jack to work with a PC or Mac, PlayStation says the controller must be connected by cable. Device and operating-system support can affect which functions are available.

Bluetooth headphones on PS5

Sony support says PS5 does not support standard Bluetooth audio connections. For console audio, use a supported gaming-headset connection or a compatible wired option instead. Do not assume that Bluetooth headphones will pair for PS5 audio just because they pair with a phone or computer.

Connect a headset to a PC

A PC may support headset audio through a headphone and microphone jack, USB audio, Bluetooth, or a dedicated wireless receiver. Available methods depend on the computer, operating system, and headset, so use the manufacturer’s model-specific setup instructions.

  1. Connect the headset by a supported method: its compatible audio jack, USB connection, Bluetooth pairing, or dedicated receiver.
  2. In Windows sound settings, select the intended headset for playback and microphone input.
  3. Open the game or voice-chat app’s audio settings and select the intended output and input there too; app settings may differ from Windows defaults.

For audio through a DualSense headset jack, connect the controller to the PC with a cable. For a supported PlayStation Link headset, use the matching adapter.

Troubleshoot audio or microphone problems

  1. Confirm the connection type. Identify whether the headset is 3.5 mm wired, USB, Bluetooth, or wireless with a proprietary receiver.
  2. Check platform support. Verify that the console, controller, or computer supports that connection. USB charging does not prove that USB audio is supported.
  3. Check the physical connection. For a controller jack, push the plug in fully. Check whether the headset’s connector arrangement requires a splitter or adapter.
  4. Select devices for both functions. Set the intended playback output and microphone input in platform settings, then check the game or voice-chat app’s own device selections.
  5. Check mute and volume controls. Test controls on the headset and in the platform or app. If only chat, chat mix, surround sound, or another specific feature fails, check the headset’s support page for restrictions in that connection mode.
  6. Verify wireless pairing and mode. Confirm that the receiver is set to the correct platform mode and paired with the headset using the manufacturer’s procedure.

What to check before choosing a connection

Compare the headset’s supported platforms and console generations against the device you plan to use. Also check whether the required wireless receiver is included or sold separately, whether microphone and chat work on that platform, whether controls such as chat mix remain available, and whether advertised features are retained in the chosen connection mode. SteelSeries’ Arctis Pro support information illustrates that connection methods can expose different features across Xbox, PlayStation, and PC; compatibility should be checked by model and setup rather than assumed across a product family.

A 3.5 mm wired headset is a straightforward option when the controller or computer has a compatible jack. For wireless use, choose a headset explicitly supported for the intended platform and use its specified receiver where required. A matching connector alone does not guarantee microphone support or full functionality.
