How to Connect a Headphone Amplifier to a DAC

Connect your DAC’s analog line output to a matching amplifier input, then plug in your headphones and start on low gain with the volume down.

Connect the DAC’s analog line output to a matching line input on the headphone amplifier, then plug your headphones into the amplifier. Use RCA when both devices have RCA line connections; use XLR or TRS only when both devices support the matching balanced connection. Start with the amp volume low and gain set to low, then raise the volume gradually.

Understand the signal path

A separate DAC converts audio from a digital source—such as a computer or streamer—into an analog signal. The headphone amplifier receives that signal and provides the drive for the headphones. The usual chain is:

Digital source → DAC → analog line cable → headphone amplifier → headphones

The connection between the DAC and amp is a line-level connection. Use the DAC’s line output, not a headphone output, and connect it to a line input on the amplifier. Schiit’s basic connections guide describes a stereo RCA pair as a common way to connect a DAC and amplifier.

Choose a compatible cable

RCA

If the DAC has left and right RCA line outputs and the amplifier has RCA line inputs, use a stereo RCA cable pair: one plug for the left channel and one for the right. Match the connections marked L and R at both ends.

Balanced XLR or TRS

Some equipment supports balanced line connections, but the cable and ports must match on both devices. JDS Labs describes connecting balanced interface line outputs to a compatible balanced headphone amplifier with TRS cables; its advice is specific to that type of setup, so check the manuals for your DAC and amp before choosing a balanced cable.

  • Complete Accessories: Includes USB charging cable, optical cable, and PC-USB to Type-B cable. Ensures hassle-free setup and immediate use. Seamless connectivity for various devices. (Note: No microphone input.)

Connector shape alone does not establish compatibility. For example, the Topping D10 Balanced manual describes a 6.35 mm TRS line output and says that model has no single-ended output. That is a device-specific design, not a general rule for DACs. A balanced connection is not automatically better; it is an option only when the equipment supports it and it suits your setup.

Headphone adapters

Adapters do not change what an amplifier’s output circuit supports. JDS Labs says a 4.4 mm balanced headphone plug can be used with a single-ended amplifier’s 6.35 mm output with a 4.4 mm female-to-6.35 mm male adapter. That guidance applies to the stated connection; consult the amplifier manual before using other adapter combinations. A passive adapter does not turn a single-ended amp into a balanced one.

Connect the DAC, amplifier, and headphones

  1. Connect the source to the DAC. Use the digital input your source supports, such as USB, optical, or coaxial. If the DAC has an input selector, choose the input you connected.
  2. Connect the DAC to the amp. Run the cable from the DAC’s analog line output to the amplifier’s matching line input. For RCA, connect left to left and right to right. For balanced connections, use only a compatible output, input, and cable as specified in the manuals.
  3. Connect your headphones. Plug them into the headphone output on the amplifier, not into a DAC line output.
  4. Select the amp input. If the amplifier has an input selector, choose the input connected to the DAC.
  5. Set a safe starting level. Turn the amplifier volume down, select low gain, start audio playback, and increase the volume gradually until it is comfortable.

Set gain and check headphone compatibility

Gain determines how much the amplifier boosts its input signal. Start on low gain; switch to high gain only if low gain cannot provide suitable listening volume. JDS Labs’ guidance discusses setting gain in relation to the source’s output voltage and recommends reserving high gain for cases where low gain is insufficient. See its amplifier-connection guide and FAQ.

Whether an amp can drive a particular pair of headphones depends on more than impedance alone. Compare the headphones’ published impedance and sensitivity with the amplifier’s specifications. JDS Labs’ power guide identifies both impedance and sensitivity as relevant to assessing headphone power needs. Without the specific headphone and amp models, a general setup guide cannot guarantee a particular listening level.

If there is no sound, check the signal path

  • Confirm the DAC is powered, selected as the audio output on your source, and set to the digital input you are using.
  • Check that the analog cable runs from the DAC’s line output to the amplifier’s line input—not to another output or a phono input.
  • Make sure the left and right plugs are fully seated, and select the amp input connected to the DAC.
  • Confirm the headphones are plugged into the amplifier’s headphone output. Check for mute, then raise the volume carefully, beginning on low gain.
  • If playback is still absent, check that the source is playing audio and consult the manuals for the source, DAC, and amplifier. Computer driver and operating-system steps vary by model and cannot be specified without knowing your equipment.
