To connect a gaming handheld to a TV, first confirm that your exact model supports video output, then connect it through the correct dock or compatible adapter, attach HDMI to the TV, provide the required power, and select the matching HDMI input. Pair a separate controller through the handheld’s controller settings, or plug a wired controller into the dock. The details differ substantially between PC-style handhelds and Nintendo Switch models.
Check whether your handheld supports TV output
Do not assume that a USB-C port can send video just because it can charge or connect accessories. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for your exact model, then choose a compatible dock or display adapter. Valve describes Steam Deck as a general-purpose PC and says it works with a variety of USB-C docks or hubs, but does not officially support every display peripheral: Steam Deck docking guidance.

For Nintendo Switch-family consoles, use the dock intended for that model. Nintendo Switch Lite does not support TV Mode, so it cannot be connected to a TV for docked play. Switch 2 has its own dock and power guidance; do not assume original Switch accessories are interchangeable. Lenovo’s Legion Go S guide describes wired display connection through its multipurpose USB-C port, while Legion Go Gen 2 lists USB4 with DisplayPort support and uses that port for TV mode. Steam Deck and other compatible PC-style handhelds
- Confirm that the handheld supports video output over the port you plan to use, and check that the dock or adapter is compatible.
- Connect the handheld to the dock or adapter. If using a direct USB-C-to-HDMI adapter, verify compatibility with the exact handheld first.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the dock or adapter to the TV, and connect the handheld’s recommended charger or the dock’s required power supply.
- Turn on the TV and select the HDMI input used by the dock.
Lenovo’s Legion Go S guide shows a suitable display cable connected to the device’s multipurpose USB Type-C connector, with the other end connected to the display. For Legion Go Gen 2, Lenovo lists support for up to three independent displays—its built-in display and two external monitors via USB-C—and USB-C support up to 8K at 30 Hz. Those are model-specific display specifications, not a promise that games render at that resolution or frame rate.

Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED
- Connect the Nintendo Switch AC adapter and an HDMI cable to the Nintendo dock.
- Place the console in the dock.
- Turn on the TV and select the HDMI input connected to the dock.
Use Nintendo’s dock-based setup rather than assuming a generic USB-C dock will work. Nintendo’s TV connection instructions cover the Switch setup and note that Switch Lite does not support TV Mode.
Nintendo Switch 2
Use the Switch 2 dock and follow Nintendo’s Switch 2 power and connection guidance. Nintendo recommends its AC adapter, model NGN-01. If using another adapter and cable with the dock, Nintendo says the power output must be at least 54 W. The older Switch adapter can power Switch 2 directly, but does not provide enough power for the Switch 2 dock.

Pair or connect a controller
A TV connection does not automatically pair a separate controller. Use the controller setup supported by your handheld, or connect a wired controller to an available USB port on the dock. Confirm that the controller is compatible with the device and charged before troubleshooting pairing.
Steam Deck
Pair a wireless controller through Steam Deck’s supported controller settings. If pairing fails, Valve recommends checking for controller software or firmware updates in its Steam Deck support guidance.

Nintendo Switch Joy-Con
Nintendo says Joy-Con that have not previously been attached to the console must first be attached before they can be used wirelessly. Follow Nintendo’s Switch instructions for the relevant Joy-Con setup.
Choose a dock or adapter that fits the setup
Before buying, check the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific handheld and compare the connection requirements that matter to your setup:

Troubleshoot no picture or controller problems
The TV shows no picture
- Make sure the TV is set to the HDMI input used by the dock.
- Reseat the handheld in the dock and reconnect the HDMI cable and power supply.
- Check that the exact handheld model supports external video output and that the dock or adapter is compatible.
- For Switch 2, Nintendo recommends using an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, checking dock power, reviewing the TV’s HDMI settings, and connecting the dock directly to the TV if a splitter or other device sits in the signal path. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 troubleshooting guidance.
The controller will not pair
- Check that the controller is charged and that you are following its pairing steps for the specific handheld.
- For Steam Deck, check for controller software or firmware updates.
- For Switch Joy-Con that have not previously been attached to the console, attach them first before trying to use them wirelessly.
The picture works, but performance is disappointing
A TV connection does not by itself establish a universal resolution or frame rate for games. Adjust the game and display settings for the handheld, the game, and the TV. A 4K TV does not mean the handheld will render a game at native 4K or at a particular frame rate.

The Switch 2 screen remains on while docked
Nintendo says the Switch 2 screen should go black when the console is docked and the dock is connected to a powered TV. After following Nintendo’s stated checks, if the screen still remains on, its support guidance says the dock may need service. This diagnostic applies to Switch 2, not all handhelds.
