The best way to get Ascension Shards in RuneScape: Dragonwilds depends on the power level you need. For Power Level 5, Fellhollow green dragons are listed as a guaranteed source of 15–20 shards per kill. For Power Level 4, General Velgar is listed at 30–40 shards per kill and can be summoned repeatedly; Abyssal Demons are another option, with a reported 40% chance to drop 12–19 shards. These are guide-reported drop tables, not results from a controlled farming test. Check the live Journal and Mystic Forge before committing to a long farm, since drops and recipes can change.
What Ascension Shards are used for
Ascension Shards are materials for supported Ascension Core recipes. Those cores are consumed in the Mystic Forge to upgrade eligible Masterwork or Vestige equipment; having shards does not make ordinary equipment eligible for ascension.

A current guide lists Power Level 4–6 core recipes that each require 99 shards of the matching tier, along with tier-specific bars, leather and cloth. It also reports a Power Level 8 recipe in version 1.0. The visible Power Level 7 shard-to-core recipe was unintended and removed in version 1.0; the guide says Power Level 7 cores come directly from the Nightmare Crucible. Power Level 5: Farm green dragons in Fellhollow
The Green Dragon Guide lists Fellhollow green dragons as an always-drop source of 15–20 Power Level 5 shards per kill. It places them south of the cliffs leading to Silverthorn Keep and northeast of the ominous gateway. The guide says they can take up to four in-game days to respawn, so this route involves waiting or rotating between other activities rather than repeatedly fighting the same dragon immediately.

For combat, the guide recommends water damage. Green dragons resist fire and are immune to Burning and Poison, so fire- or status-effect-focused tactics are poor fits for this encounter. See the Green Dragon Guide for its location and combat details.
Power Level 4: Choose between Velgar and Abyssal Demons
General Velgar: a repeatable summoned encounter
The General Velgar guide lists 30–40 Power Level 4 shards as an always drop. You summon the fight with a crafted challenge horn; according to the guide, you can create a new instance with another horn or by rejoining. This makes Velgar a documented repeatable route, though the source does not establish how its time or resource cost compares with other farms. Details are in the General Velgar guide.

Abyssal Demons: a chance-based drop
Jagex confirms that Abyssal Demons drop Tier 4 Upgrade Shards, describing the reward as help with upgrading other equipment. A specialist guide reports a 40/100 chance of receiving 12–19 Power Level 4 shards from an Abyssal Demon. That quantity is therefore not guaranteed on every kill. Jagex’s announcement is “Changing the Abyssal Whip – RS: Dragonwilds”; the guide’s drop details appear in the Abyssal Demon Guide.
Compare the documented routes
| Shard tier | Route | Reported drop | Repeatability and practical detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power Level 5 | Green dragons, Fellhollow | 15–20 shards per kill; listed as an always drop by the Green Dragon Guide. | The guide says respawn can take up to four in-game days; it recommends water damage. |
| Power Level 4 | General Velgar | 30–40 shards per kill; listed as an always drop by the General Velgar guide. | Summoned with a crafted challenge horn; the guide describes creating a new instance with another horn or by rejoining. |
| Power Level 4 | Abyssal Demons | 12–19 shards on a 40/100 roll, according to the Abyssal Demon Guide; Jagex confirms the Tier 4 shard reward. | Chance-based rather than a listed guaranteed drop. |
The sources do not provide comparable kills per hour, travel time or survival costs, so they do not support calling any route the fastest. Compare the shard tier, listed yield, whether the drop is guaranteed and whether you can repeat the encounter with the resources you have.

Check the recipe before you farm
- Confirm the power level of the shard you need. The listed Power Level 4–6 core recipes use 99 shards matching the recipe tier, plus other tier-specific materials. The Ascension Cores and Mystic Forge Guide provides the recipe details.
- Open the Mystic Forge and verify the current recipe before gathering a large stock. If the live Forge differs from a guide, use the in-game recipe as your reference.
- For an equipment upgrade, check that the intended Masterwork or Vestige item appears in the Forge’s ascension interface. Equipment is not automatically eligible merely because you have a core.
- Do not farm Power Level 7 shards based on an old recipe screenshot. The current guide says the shard-to-core recipe was unintended and removed in version 1.0, and that Power Level 7 cores come from the Nightmare Crucible.
