To connect a game controller, identify its exact model, choose a connection method the controller and device both support, then pair or plug it in and test it in the game. Bluetooth, USB, and model-specific wireless adapters are the main options—but a controller showing as connected does not guarantee that a particular game supports it or that every feature will work.
First check the controller and the device
Compatibility depends on the controller model, its generation, the host device and operating system, and the game or app. Before pairing, check the controller maker’s current compatibility guidance for your exact model and target device. A model’s support for one operating system does not establish support for another controller or platform.

There are three broad connection routes: Bluetooth, a wired USB connection, or a model-specific wireless adapter. Use an adapter only when the controller maker confirms it works with both the controller and host; there is no universally compatible adapter.

Choose Bluetooth or USB
Bluetooth
Put the controller into its model-specific pairing mode, open Bluetooth settings on the host, and choose the controller from the nearby-device list. The button or combination required to enter pairing mode varies by model. If the controller was paired to another device, you may need to disconnect it there or remove its old pairing before trying again.

- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
USB
Connect the controller to a compatible port using a cable that supports data as well as charging. A charging-only cable may power the controller without allowing the host to communicate with it. Check that the cable ends and ports match the controller and device. For DualSense, Sony specifies a USB Type-C cable when connecting to a supported device (PlayStation’s DualSense connection guidance).
Connect a controller to an Apple device
Apple says compatible wireless Xbox, PlayStation, and other Bluetooth controllers can connect to iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro. Put the controller into pairing mode, then open Bluetooth settings on the Apple device and select it. Some controllers can pair and connect automatically when plugged directly into the Apple device with a USB cable that supports both data and charging.

PlayStation documents DualSense Bluetooth and USB support on Windows 10 (64 bit), macOS Big Sur 11.3, iOS 14.5, iPadOS 14.5, tvOS 14.5, and Android 12 or later. Its broader controller guidance also lists Android TV OS 12. A device connection still does not ensure that a game supports DualSense. Sony says PC support can vary by game, and directs players to check the game’s controller-support listing in Steam. Feature support varies by device too: haptic feedback works only in supported games, is not supported on Mac or mobile devices, and may require USB on Windows.
Connect a controller to a console
Use the console maker’s pairing instructions for the exact controller and console. Do not assume a controller designed for one console works natively with another console, a PC, or a phone merely because both have Bluetooth.

Nintendo Switch pairing limits and indicators
Nintendo says the number of controllers a Switch can connect depends on controller type and features, and whether local communication is in use. If Bluetooth audio is connected, no more than two wireless controllers can be connected. Nintendo’s player LED guide says unlit LEDs mean the controller is disconnected or its link was cut; sequential flashing means it is connecting; one or more solid LEDs mean it is connected; and flashing LEDs indicate very low battery charge. See Nintendo’s controller-pairing FAQ for the console-specific guidance.
Confirm the game recognizes the controller
After pairing or plugging in, open the intended game and check its controller settings or input screen. The operating system may recognize a gamepad while a specific game does not, or the game may support basic input without supporting features such as haptics, lights, or an audio jack. If a game offers a controller-support listing or input options, use those to confirm what it accepts.

Troubleshoot a controller that will not connect
- Check power and model. Charge the controller, confirm its exact model and generation, and verify that the target device and operating system are supported.
- Retry Bluetooth pairing. If required by the controller, unplug its cable; enter the correct pairing mode; then select it in the host’s Bluetooth settings. Disconnect or forget it on a previously paired device if it keeps reconnecting there.
- Check the wired connection. Try a compatible data-capable cable and port. For USB-C controllers such as DualSense, confirm that both host and cable support the connection.
- Refresh the connection. Install available host and controller software updates, remove the old Bluetooth pairing, and pair again. Apple also recommends reducing connected Bluetooth devices if interference or connection problems persist.
- Test the intended game. If the device shows the controller as connected but the game does not respond, check that game’s controller support and settings rather than assuming the connection itself failed.
