How to Connect a Dell Laptop to the Internet With an Ethernet Cable

Connect a Dell laptop to the internet by Ethernet: use the RJ45 jack or a USB adapter, plug into a router LAN port, and troubleshoot if it fails.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Plug one end of an Ethernet cable into the laptop’s RJ45 jack and the other into a LAN port on your router or modem/router. If your Dell has no RJ45 jack, add a USB-C-to-RJ45 (or USB-A-to-RJ45) adapter and run the cable from the adapter to the router. That is the setup Dell Support describes in its Windows 11 and Windows 10 wired-connection guide for the home.

Step-by-step: connect the cable

  1. Find the port. Look along the laptop’s sides for an RJ45 jack. It is a rectangular port, wider than a USB port. Dell notes that port location varies by device, so check the manual for your exact model if you can’t tell.
  2. Connect the laptop end. If there is an RJ45 jack, push the cable in until it clicks. If not, plug a compatible USB-C-to-RJ45 or USB-A-to-RJ45 adapter into the matching laptop port, then plug the cable into the adapter.
  3. Connect the router end. Use a LAN port on the router or modem/router. Dell’s guide says the other end goes “into the LAN port on your Modem or broadband router.” Don’t use the router’s WAN/Internet port, which is for the incoming line.
  4. Wait a moment. Windows should establish the connection by itself. Dell’s pages don’t document one prompt sequence that applies to every Windows version, laptop model and managed network, so what you see on screen may differ.
  5. Test it. Open a website. Dell describes a wired connection as one that lets you get “a fast and stable Internet connection.”

Direct port, adapter or dock: which do you need?

Your laptop Option What to check
Has an RJ45 jack Cable straight to the router Router end is in a LAN port
USB-C, no RJ45 jack USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter The laptop’s USB-C port is compatible; check the adapter’s driver and speed specifications
USB-A, no RJ45 jack USB-A-to-Ethernet adapter A compatible USB-A port is free; check the adapter’s requirements
Desk setup with other peripherals Ethernet-equipped hub or dock Compatibility and Ethernet specifications for your exact laptop

Dell’s hardware guidance treats a small USB adapter as the portable choice and a dock as a single-cable connection that can also carry other ports. Its sources don’t compare specific products, prices or measured speeds, so check the specifications of whatever you buy. Dell also sells its own USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter; its DA300 manual documents the Ethernet function.

Do adapters need drivers?

Dell says most modern USB Ethernet adapters are plug-and-play on Windows 10 and 11, but some need a one-time driver installation. Don’t assume any given adapter works without one.

If it doesn’t connect

No connection at all

  • Reseat both ends of the cable until they are fully seated.
  • Try a known-good cable if you have one.
  • Confirm the router end is in a LAN port.
  • Run the Windows Network Troubleshooter.
  • Restart the network devices (modem and router). Dell also points to the Optimize Network feature in SupportAssist.

Adapter not recognized

Confirm the adapter matches the laptop’s port type and check whether its manufacturer requires a driver.

Wi-Fi is still on while Ethernet is plugged in

That doesn’t mean the Ethernet setup failed. Dell has a support article (000199974, last modified 2026-05-19) describing certain listed systems that “remain on WiFi when plugged into Ethernet” through a USB-C dongle. Dell says the wireless-radio switching feature applies in that case when docked. It is model-specific, so Ethernet doesn’t automatically turn off Wi-Fi on every Dell laptop. If you want to be sure traffic uses the cable, turn Wi-Fi off in Windows.

Work or school laptop

Dell’s home guide doesn’t cover enterprise network authentication or managed-device policies. If a correctly connected laptop still can’t reach a corporate network, ask your IT administrator rather than changing network settings yourself.
