To connect a computer to Wi-Fi, turn on Wi-Fi, open the network menu, choose the network you want, and enter its password when asked. The exact clicks depend on your operating system, and the computer must have a wireless network adapter. If it joins the network but websites still won’t load, the problem is internet access rather than the connection itself. That distinction matters for troubleshooting, so it is covered below.
Before you start: confirm the computer has a wireless adapter
A computer needs a wireless network adapter to join any Wi-Fi network. Microsoft’s guidance on wireless networking in Windows says most laptops and tablets have one built in, while some desktops do not.

- Laptops and tablets: usually have a built-in adapter. If the Wi-Fi option is missing entirely, check the hardware or the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Windows: open Device Manager and expand Network adapters. An entry with “Wireless,” “Wi-Fi,” or “802.11” in its name indicates a wireless adapter.
- Desktops without Wi-Fi: a compatible USB Wi-Fi adapter or another supported wireless adapter can add the capability. Check compatibility with your computer model and operating system before buying.
- Home internet: joining an existing Wi-Fi network needs only the adapter. Setting up your own network requires a wireless router and an internet connection from a service provider, which is a separate task.
Connect to Wi-Fi on Windows 11
Microsoft’s Windows 11 support instructions describe the following flow.

- Select the Network, Sound, or Battery icons on the taskbar to open quick settings.
- Open the Wi-Fi list from quick settings to see nearby networks.
- Select the network you want, then choose Connect.
- Enter the network password and select Next.
If your network does not appear, refresh the network list and check again. A Windows device with a camera can also scan the Wi-Fi QR code printed on many routers or shared by the network owner. Confirm that you want to add and connect to the network when Windows prompts you.

Connect to Wi-Fi on Windows 10
Microsoft ended free Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, but many PCs still run it. The connection steps are similar.
- Select the Network icon on the taskbar.
- Choose the network you want.
- Select Connect.
- Enter the password when prompted.
Windows 10 may also ask whether your PC should be discoverable by other PCs and devices. Answer based on where you are: a home network you control is a different case from a café or airport network. When unsure, choose the more private option.

- Click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar.
- Choose the network you want from the list.
- If prompted, enter the Wi-Fi password, or agree to the network’s terms and conditions.
Connect to Wi-Fi on Ubuntu
Ubuntu’s desktop help describes selecting Wi-Fi and choosing a nearby wireless network. Menu labels and layouts vary between Linux distributions and desktop environments, so the names you see may differ.

When the computer won’t join the network
Start with the basics before changing any system settings.
- Confirm Wi-Fi is turned on.
- Select the intended network, not a neighbour’s or a similarly named one.
- Re-enter the password carefully. Passwords are case-sensitive.
- Move closer to the router. Ubuntu’s help lists weak signal as a common cause.
- If the password and signal are fine, Ubuntu’s help identifies a problem with the computer’s wireless card as another possible cause.
When Wi-Fi connects but there is no internet
Joining a network and reaching the internet are separate steps. Apple notes that a Mac can connect to a Wi-Fi network that provides no internet access. The same is true on Windows and Linux.

A quick test separates the two problems. Connect a phone or tablet to the same network. If it also cannot load websites, the router or internet service is the likely source. If only this computer fails, focus on the computer’s settings and adapter.

Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance follows an escalating sequence. Work through the steps in order.

- Check the connection status and confirm the network is available in the Wi-Fi list.
- Run the built-in network troubleshooter.
- Test another device on the same network.
- If the router offers a second frequency band, try connecting to the other band.
- Investigate the adapter, the router, or the internet connection.
- Only then use advanced steps such as adapter driver changes. Microsoft presents a network reset as a last resort, because it removes and reinstalls network adapters and resets network settings.
Microsoft also describes pinging the router’s default gateway and trying an Ethernet cable to determine whether the Wi-Fi router is the problem.
