How to Connect a Canon PIXMA Printer to Wi-Fi

Put your PIXMA in wireless setup mode, finish setup from a phone or computer on the same Wi-Fi, or use WPS if supported. Here's how, and what to do when it fails.

To connect a Canon PIXMA printer to Wi-Fi, put the printer into its wireless setup mode (Canon calls it Wireless Connect, Easy Wireless Connect or Cableless Setup, depending on the model). Then finish the job from a phone or computer that is on the Wi-Fi network you want the printer to join. A WPS push-button route also exists, but only if both the printer and router support it. The exact buttons and menus differ by model, and Canon does not publish one universal sequence, so start by identifying your model.

Step-by-step: the general setup path

  1. Find the exact model name. Look on the front or top of the printer, on its display, or on its label. Open that model’s page on Canon’s support site and pick the setup instructions for your device. Canon’s PIXMA TR7820 support page shows separate wireless setup paths for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android.
  2. Check the basics. The router should be on, the printer powered on, and a Wi-Fi-enabled phone or computer nearby. Canon says wireless printing needs all three, and that the devices must be on the same wireless network (Canon).
  3. Start wireless setup on the printer. Depending on the model, this is a button press or a menu path. In Canon’s PIXMA G620 Windows guide (August 6, 2024), you start Easy Wireless Connect on the printer before running the computer setup file.
  4. Complete the connection from your device. On a computer, run the setup file from your model’s Canon Support page. In the G620 example you choose your network and enter its password. On supported setups, the Canon PRINT app can pass the network details to the printer; Canon’s TR7820 page says the app can set up the printer and, where supported, print and scan.
  5. Install drivers and software if needed. Canon treats joining the printer to Wi-Fi and installing computer drivers/software as separate stages, so a connected printer may still need its software before it prints or scans from a PC.

Choosing a setup method

Method Needs Best when
Easy Wireless Connect / Cableless Setup Phone or computer on your Wi-Fi; model support Most newer PIXMA models; you want guided setup
Canon PRINT app Supported printer and phone You mainly print from a phone
WPS push button WPS on both printer and router You’d rather not type the network name and password
Manual selection on the printer A model with a display Older models such as the MX922

Using WPS

Canon’s MG5720 WPS instructions (July 23, 2024) show the pattern: choose WPS on the printer, press the router’s WPS button, then confirm on the printer within two minutes. The menu wording and sequence are specific to that model, so check yours before copying it.

Older models with a display

Canon’s MX922 article (October 24, 2024) covers manually connecting to a wireless network from a Windows PC. Controls and menu paths on the MX922, G620, MG5720 and newer printers differ, so if your screen doesn’t match a guide, stop and use the manual for your exact model.

If your network changed

A new router, network name or password can mean repeating wireless setup. Canon documents reconnecting supported printers with Canon PRINT on iOS (October 22, 2024), as well as through Easy Wireless Connect/Cableless Setup. That article applies to iOS and its listed models only.

If setup fails

  • Recheck the password. Canon’s MX922 article recommends verifying the entered passphrase after a failed connection.
  • Confirm the network. Your phone or computer and the printer must be targeting the same network. If your router broadcasts several networks, make sure you are on the intended one.
  • Restart the router. For the MX922, Canon suggests powering the router off for 15 seconds, letting it restart, and trying again if the password is correct. That is model-specific advice, not a guaranteed fix for every PIXMA.
  • Printer connected but PC can’t print or scan. Install or reinstall the software for your model from its Canon Support page.
